Chapter 2

作者: moore
Early the next morning, Mia sent me a message.

“Claire, I’m sorry about yesterday. I really didn’t mean to upset you. Please don’t be mad at me, okay?”

A moment later, she sent me a photo.

In it, she was sitting in Julian’s car, cradling a birthday cake in her hands.

“Julian said he’d take me to see you today so I could make it up to you. I made you another birthday cake myself. I hope you can forgive me.”

I ignored her message and got up to get ready to go out.

Not long afterward, Julian called me.

“Claire, Mia wants to come see you today.”

“She really should have thought things through yesterday, and I’ve already spoken to her about it. She’s coming over to apologize, and she even made you another birthday cake herself. Just accept her apology.”

I couldn’t help laughing.

“The decorations at my birthday party had nothing to do with my taste, the cake contained something I’m allergic to, she blew out my candles and rushed to make the first cut. Now she’s apologizing, and I’m supposed to pretend none of it ever happened?”

There was a brief silence on the other end before Julian sighed.

“Claire, I know you feel hurt, but you don’t have to make this into something so serious.”

“Mia’s been spoiled by her family since she was little, so of course she can be a little willful sometimes. She just wanted to make the party more lively. She wasn’t deliberately trying to humiliate you.”

“Besides, she’s your sister. As the older one, you should be a little more generous. Let it go, and that’ll be the end of it. Do you really expect her to get down on her knees and beg for your forgiveness?”

I held my phone as my heart slowly turned cold.

Every time Mia crossed a line, someone was always ready with an excuse for her.

When we were children, my parents said she was too young to know better whenever she took something that belonged to me.

As we grew older, whenever she made decisions on my behalf without asking, Julian insisted she was only trying to be kind.

Whenever she embarrassed me, it was because she was immature.

Yet the moment I showed even the slightest displeasure, I became the one who was petty and unreasonable.

My throat felt dry as I finally answered, “She can come if she wants to.”

I had no desire to argue with him anymore, so I hung up.

At noon, the doorbell rang right on time.

Mia stood at the door holding the cake, accompanied by two Sterling family bodyguards carrying an assortment of gift boxes. Julian stood beside her, holding a dark blue jewelry box.

The moment Mia saw me, her eyes immediately filled with tears.

“Claire, I’m sorry. I was wrong to blow out your candles. I didn’t know you’d mind so much… and I shouldn’t have asked Julian to replace the flowers, either.”

She gently set the cake on the table.

“Come on, Claire. Make another wish! I promise I won’t blow out your candles this time!”

Written crookedly across the cake in strawberry jam were all three of our names.

I looked at her calmly.

“If this is supposed to be a replacement birthday cake for me, why are there three names on it?”

Mia’s smile froze.

“Haven’t we always done everything together? I just wanted all three of us to be happy.”

Julian opened the jewelry box and pushed it toward me.

“She’s just trying to express her good wishes. Don’t be so sensitive. Look at this necklace. Mia picked it out especially for you.”

I looked at the necklace but made no move to take it.

After they left, I called the event planner.

“Cancel the engagement party.”

The planner responded almost immediately.

“Miss Ashford, are you sure you want to cancel? Mr. Sterling has arranged for Miss Mia to represent the Ashford family and accompany the two of you through the engagement ceremony.”

I froze.

“When was this decided? Why wasn’t I informed?”

“Mr. Sterling said that you and Miss Mia are very close as sisters, so he was certain you wouldn’t object.”

Holding my phone, I suddenly found the whole thing absurd.

He hadn’t even bothered to ask me. He had already agreed on my behalf.

Before I could respond, the planner added, “There’s one more thing. Mr. Sterling also wants Miss Mia’s seat placed between the two of you. He said it would make it easier for you to look after your younger sister.”

I fell silent for a long time.

So, in Julian’s eyes, I was not only expected to forgive Mia, but also to make room for her at my own engagement party.

I gently closed my eyes.

“Cancel the engagement party. All those arrangements are off.”

  • She Blew Out My Candles. I Called Off the Engagement   Chapter 8

By this point, I had firmly established myself in Milan.I had signed with a fashion house, made a name for myself as an emerging designer, and opened my own studio. I had also built up a network of valuable industry connections.Once everything had settled into place, I brought my parents to Milan, leaving all the old entanglements and turmoil behind us. For the first time in a long while, our lives were peaceful and secure. Not long afterward, the results of the International Young Designers Competition were officially announced, and my entry took first place. That day, I arrived at the studio and pushed open the door at my usual time.A shower of colorful confetti drifted down as cheers erupted around me.My colleagues had secretly organized a surprise party to celebrate my achievement, keeping the entire thing hidden from me until the very last moment.I stood frozen in the doorway, unable to process what was happening for a long time.Only then did it dawn on me that it had been a

After everything that happened, Julian’s parents were among the first to come to my family’s home, bringing expensive gifts to apologize in person. They looked utterly sincere as they repeatedly pleaded on Julian’s behalf, trying to persuade my parents to reconsider.“The two of them have been together for so many years. They should cherish what they have. Please don’t let a moment of anger destroy a relationship that could have lasted a lifetime.”In the past, my parents might have softened and tried to reconcile us.But this time, my mother stood firm, without the slightest hesitation.“My daughter didn’t decide on a whim that she no longer wanted to marry him. She endured this for six whole years. It took her that long to finally give up on him.”After hearing the full story and seeing how resolute my parents were, Julian’s parents could only express their regret and respect my decision. They never brought up the possibility of reconciliation again.Julian, however, still couldn’t a

My mother immediately opened the message I had sent her and quickly read through it.The anger on her face gradually faded, replaced by overwhelming heartache. Her eyes grew redder by the second, and even her fingertips trembled slightly.I had never liked complaining to my parents because I didn't want them to worry about me.But by this point, I had completely given up hope. So I finally gathered all the grievances I had kept buried for six long years, organized them one by one, and sent everything to my mother. For six years, every time my birthday came around, Julian had always prioritized Mia's preferences without ever considering what I wanted. This year, on my twenty-eighth birthday, he had gone too far. He knew perfectly well that I was severely allergic to mangoes, yet he had still allowed Mia to order a birthday cake covered in them.Mia had casually blown out the candles that should have been mine to extinguish. She had also rushed to cut the first slice of cake with Julian,

The engagement party was packed with guests, and the ballroom buzzed with cheerful conversations and laughter. Everything was grand and festive, just as an occasion like this was supposed to be.Julian stood among the guests in a black designer suit, looking composed and impeccably polished. But inside, he was already in turmoil. The engagement ceremony was about to begin, yet I, the bride-to-be, was nowhere to be seen.He held his phone and called me again and again, but none of his calls went through. With growing irritation, he tugged at his tie and muttered, “What on earth is Claire doing? How can she be late on such an important day? She has no sense of propriety at all.”Mia, standing beside him in her elegant attire, saw his frustration clearly. She immediately lowered her eyes, putting on a remorseful expression before speaking softly.“Julian, could it be... that Claire is still angry with me?”Julian turned to look at her.Mia's eyes instantly reddened, and her voice filled w

The next day, Mia kept posting photos of the engagement party preparations in the family group chat, and Julian responded to every single one of her messages. He even personally called a jeweler to confirm the details of a brooch she had picked out. They discussed flowers, gowns, and the party arrangements as though the upcoming engagement celebration were their big day.Their messages no longer upset me.Before leaving, I decided to retrieve the gown I had left in the design studio at the Sterling estate. It was a gown I had designed myself.I had spent three whole months creating it specifically for our engagement celebration, drawing inspiration from vintage European elegance. I had carefully selected every black diamond embellishment, personally overseeing every last detail to make sure it was exactly as I envisioned.I had originally planned to wear it on the day of our engagement. Now, there was no need. When I arrived at the estate, the door to the studio was slightly ajar.Mia’

Less than ten minutes after I spoke to the planner, Julian called me.“Claire, you canceled the engagement party? What are you throwing a tantrum about now? Didn’t we just settle this?”“Our engagement is a matter between both families. No matter what, I’m not going to let you act on impulse this time!”I opened my mouth, but no words came out. Eventually, I simply said, “Fine. Do whatever you want.”After all, I would be leaving in two days. By then, whoever Julian wanted to hold his engagement party with would have nothing to do with me.Julian must have assumed I had given in, because before long, the event-planning company sent me another message.“Miss Ashford, Mr. Sterling came by earlier and informed us that the engagement ceremony would proceed as planned, with some adjustments to the venue decorations and invitation design. We’ve sent the revised proposal to your email for your review.”I opened the email and looked through the updated arrangements. The string quartet I had or
