Chapter 1

Julian had spent the past two weeks preparing for my birthday party at the estate, assuring me with complete confidence, “Claire, just leave everything to me. Don’t I know what you like by now?”

His initiative had made me look forward to the party more than ever.

But when my birthday finally arrived and I stepped into the ballroom, I was completely stunned.

The entire venue had been transformed into the romantic garden theme my younger sister loved.

But my taste had always leaned toward classic European elegance.

The magnificent crystal chandelier I had spent a fortune acquiring was nowhere to be seen, replaced by pink drapery. The gilded reliefs had been removed and replaced with artificial floral garlands.

Even the red roses I had arranged to have flown in had been replaced with peonies and hydrangeas, both of which I was allergic to.

Worst of all, the three-tier birthday cake was covered in mango, which I was allergic to as well.

Julian knew perfectly well that I couldn’t eat mangoes.

When he noticed me staring at the cake, he was quick to explain on my sister’s behalf.

“Mia made the cake herself. She might have overlooked a few things, so try to be understanding.”

Mia hurried over and clung to my arm, pouting playfully.

“Claire, I stayed up for two whole nights designing this cake. Do you really not like it?”

The ballroom fell silent for a moment as the guests stole curious glances in my direction.

After a brief pause, I forced a smile.

“It’s not that I don’t like it.”

I said nothing about how disappointed I was.

Ever since we were children, our parents had always favored Mia—the younger sister who always knew just what to say. Our birthdays were only two days apart, so every year, they bought a single cake and celebrated Mia’s birthday.

I had always wanted a birthday that belonged to me alone.

Yet I had never imagined that this time, Mia would even blow out my candles for me.

I was reminded of the day I received my acceptance offer from MIT. Before I could even share the news myself, she had already posted about it on social media.

“My sister is amazing! She absolutely has to take me out to dinner tonight!”

When I got promoted and bought my first car, she climbed into the passenger seat, then posted a nine-photo collage online.

“My first car, of course I’m taking the most important person in my life for a ride.”

On our third anniversary, she announced that she had just gone through a breakup and that eating alone would be too miserable to bear. She insisted on sitting across from us, turning what was supposed to be a romantic candlelit dinner for two into a meal for three.

I had told Julian that it made me uncomfortable, but he always laughed it off.

“You know what your sister’s like. It’s not as if you haven’t known her your whole life.”

“She’s close to both of us. Don’t read too much into it.”

And this year, she had turned my birthday party into her own event.

By then, Mia and Julian had already started distributing the cake.

The first slice, the one bearing the words Happy Birthday, went to Mia.

Then came the second slice, the third, and so on, each going to one of the guests who had teased them earlier.

By the time it was my turn, the three-tier cake had collapsed into a misshapen mess that had completely killed my appetite.

I set down my plate, picked up my bag without a word, and headed for the doors.

Mia called out to me from the stage.

“Claire, the dancing is about to start! Aren’t you going to get ready for the opening dance? Where are you going?”

Standing beside her onstage, Julian frowned in displeasure.

“Claire, don’t make a scene at an important event.”

I turned back and asked him just one question.

“Whose birthday is it, exactly?”

Julian froze, while Mia’s eyes immediately filled with tears.

“Claire, did I upset you again? I’m sorry!”

Julian frowned.

“Claire, she’s apologized. What more do you want?”

I no longer had the energy to say another word to either of them, so I turned and walked straight out of the ballroom.

Behind me, I heard Julian say, “Don’t go after her. She’ll come back on her own once she’s calmed down.”

He was so certain I loved him too much to leave. To him, this was just another tantrum. Nothing would actually change.

But this time, I really was leaving for good.

By this point, I had firmly established myself in Milan.I had signed with a fashion house, made a name for myself as an emerging designer, and opened my own studio. I had also built up a network of valuable industry connections.Once everything had settled into place, I brought my parents to Milan, leaving all the old entanglements and turmoil behind us. For the first time in a long while, our lives were peaceful and secure. Not long afterward, the results of the International Young Designers Competition were officially announced, and my entry took first place. That day, I arrived at the studio and pushed open the door at my usual time.A shower of colorful confetti drifted down as cheers erupted around me.My colleagues had secretly organized a surprise party to celebrate my achievement, keeping the entire thing hidden from me until the very last moment.I stood frozen in the doorway, unable to process what was happening for a long time.Only then did it dawn on me that it had been a

After everything that happened, Julian’s parents were among the first to come to my family’s home, bringing expensive gifts to apologize in person. They looked utterly sincere as they repeatedly pleaded on Julian’s behalf, trying to persuade my parents to reconsider.“The two of them have been together for so many years. They should cherish what they have. Please don’t let a moment of anger destroy a relationship that could have lasted a lifetime.”In the past, my parents might have softened and tried to reconcile us.But this time, my mother stood firm, without the slightest hesitation.“My daughter didn’t decide on a whim that she no longer wanted to marry him. She endured this for six whole years. It took her that long to finally give up on him.”After hearing the full story and seeing how resolute my parents were, Julian’s parents could only express their regret and respect my decision. They never brought up the possibility of reconciliation again.Julian, however, still couldn’t a

My mother immediately opened the message I had sent her and quickly read through it.The anger on her face gradually faded, replaced by overwhelming heartache. Her eyes grew redder by the second, and even her fingertips trembled slightly.I had never liked complaining to my parents because I didn't want them to worry about me.But by this point, I had completely given up hope. So I finally gathered all the grievances I had kept buried for six long years, organized them one by one, and sent everything to my mother. For six years, every time my birthday came around, Julian had always prioritized Mia's preferences without ever considering what I wanted. This year, on my twenty-eighth birthday, he had gone too far. He knew perfectly well that I was severely allergic to mangoes, yet he had still allowed Mia to order a birthday cake covered in them.Mia had casually blown out the candles that should have been mine to extinguish. She had also rushed to cut the first slice of cake with Julian,

The engagement party was packed with guests, and the ballroom buzzed with cheerful conversations and laughter. Everything was grand and festive, just as an occasion like this was supposed to be.Julian stood among the guests in a black designer suit, looking composed and impeccably polished. But inside, he was already in turmoil. The engagement ceremony was about to begin, yet I, the bride-to-be, was nowhere to be seen.He held his phone and called me again and again, but none of his calls went through. With growing irritation, he tugged at his tie and muttered, “What on earth is Claire doing? How can she be late on such an important day? She has no sense of propriety at all.”Mia, standing beside him in her elegant attire, saw his frustration clearly. She immediately lowered her eyes, putting on a remorseful expression before speaking softly.“Julian, could it be... that Claire is still angry with me?”Julian turned to look at her.Mia's eyes instantly reddened, and her voice filled w

The next day, Mia kept posting photos of the engagement party preparations in the family group chat, and Julian responded to every single one of her messages. He even personally called a jeweler to confirm the details of a brooch she had picked out. They discussed flowers, gowns, and the party arrangements as though the upcoming engagement celebration were their big day.Their messages no longer upset me.Before leaving, I decided to retrieve the gown I had left in the design studio at the Sterling estate. It was a gown I had designed myself.I had spent three whole months creating it specifically for our engagement celebration, drawing inspiration from vintage European elegance. I had carefully selected every black diamond embellishment, personally overseeing every last detail to make sure it was exactly as I envisioned.I had originally planned to wear it on the day of our engagement. Now, there was no need. When I arrived at the estate, the door to the studio was slightly ajar.Mia’

Less than ten minutes after I spoke to the planner, Julian called me.“Claire, you canceled the engagement party? What are you throwing a tantrum about now? Didn’t we just settle this?”“Our engagement is a matter between both families. No matter what, I’m not going to let you act on impulse this time!”I opened my mouth, but no words came out. Eventually, I simply said, “Fine. Do whatever you want.”After all, I would be leaving in two days. By then, whoever Julian wanted to hold his engagement party with would have nothing to do with me.Julian must have assumed I had given in, because before long, the event-planning company sent me another message.“Miss Ashford, Mr. Sterling came by earlier and informed us that the engagement ceremony would proceed as planned, with some adjustments to the venue decorations and invitation design. We’ve sent the revised proposal to your email for your review.”I opened the email and looked through the updated arrangements. The string quartet I had or
