She Canceled. I Left.
She Canceled. I Left.
Penulis: Lovelyn

Chapter 1

Penulis: Lovelyn
The insurance rep asked Olivia to confirm it for the third time.

"Ms. Grant, I need to hear you say it. You really want to terminate the Love Insurance policy?"

He tapped the contract.

"It matures in three days. Keep it active that long and the two of you collect a three-hundred-thousand-dollar payout."

Olivia didn't even look up.

She signed the cancellation form.

"Terminate it."

Nathan winced.

"When you two bought this policy, you were about as in love as anyone who's ever sat in that chair. You told me you wanted to renew it the day it matured."

Pain closed around my chest.

I gripped the arm of my chair.

Olivia already had her phone up, recording a voice message for somebody else.

"Julian, it's done. I canceled the Love Insurance.

"When I get back, we'll go down to the city hall.

"Then wedding photos, and rings. Sound good?"

Nathan looked from her to me.

"Ms. Grant. Your husband is sitting right here."

Even a stranger found it cruel.

I'd lived inside it long enough that I should have gone numb by now.

I hadn't.

Olivia and I had married and divorced ten times.

Ten.

Every time, Julian Stone—the boy she'd never gotten over—would call, or cry, or manufacture some crisis about not being able to watch her belong to another man.

And every time, Olivia listened to him.

She'd divorce me.

Then, once Julian settled down or disappeared again, she'd come back and tell me we could remarry.

The clerks knew us by name.

Something hit my cheek.

A ring bounced off the desk and hit the floor. The diamond came out of the setting when it landed.

"Here. Take it back."

She said it the way you'd hand back a borrowed pen.

"I'm meeting Julian later to pick out rings. It'd be weird if he saw this one."

She caught my expression and frowned.

"Don't make that face. I already told you, I'll remarry you in a few days.

"Julian doesn't have much time left. I just want to be with him for what's left of it."

My fingers tightened.

Then I reached for the termination agreement and signed my name under hers.

When I looked up, Olivia was stripping off the bracelet and the necklace I'd given her.

She dropped both in the trash.

Then she smiled into her phone.

"Julian. Wait for me. I'm coming to marry you."

A memory surfaced without asking permission.

All ten times she'd married me, she had looked impatient. Tired. Like standing next to me at that counter was one more errand to get through before lunch.

So she was capable of being happy about a wedding.

Just not one of ours.

"Olivia."

She stopped at the door.

I had one last question, and my knuckles had gone white on the armrest.

"Three months ago, when we signed the Love Insurance contract. Did you ever actually read the terms?"

She glanced back.

"It's an insurance policy, Ethan. What's there to read?

"I'm busy. I'm not standing here wasting the afternoon on this."

Then she was gone.

Nathan watched the door swing shut. He didn't bother hiding what he thought of her.

"Mr. Reed. I'm sorry."

Then he lowered his voice.

"But you understand what happens in three days now, don't you?

"She terminated early, and you signed as the non-breaching party. Our relocation team comes for you.

"You'd be moved somewhere she can't reach. You could go the rest of your life without ever seeing Ms. Grant again."

He paused.

"Do you actually want to go?"

Did I?

Eight years pressed down on my chest all at once.

When my father died, Olivia had stayed with me through the funeral and every week after it. There'd been a time when I believed she was the one person who would never walk away from me.

Then Julian came back from overseas.

Everything changed.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Julian.

[Thanks for stepping aside, Ethan. Today was the best day of my life.]

A photo underneath it.

Julian and Olivia on the steps, holding up their marriage license.

She looked at me and there was still hope in it."Eth. Would you start over with me?"I answered gently."I'm sorry. I have a girlfriend."The door opened and Hannah Brooks came in.I'd met her overseas. She was the one who sat with me while I learned how to have a life again.Something went out of Olivia's eyes. The tears came faster."You really don't love me anymore?"I took Hannah's hand."No. I really don't."Everyone has to move forward eventually. Don't they."Hannah and I are getting married next month. You'd be welcome to come."I took the invitation out of my coat and held it out.Her tears came down onto the envelope. She had a hand pressed to her chest and she was shaking through all of it.She looked exactly the way I used to look. There'd been a time when all I wanted in the world was for her to stop divorcing me. She hadn't stopped. She'd gotten worse.Olivia bit down on her lip hard enough to draw blood and didn't seem to notice it.She only looked at

The company was afraid of what she might do to herself, so in the end they asked me to go and see her. When I got there she was in the bed, pale down to her lips. She saw me and smiled."I knew you'd come."You do remember me. Don't you."Eth, we loved each other once."I stayed near the door."I do remember you."The hope came up in her face all at once."But I don't love you anymore."The color went out of her. Her mouth started shaking."I know I hurt you. I know how many times."But I understand now. I divorced Julian. It's done."It's only going to be you and me from here on."She got out of the bed while she was talking and put her arms around me.Her tears went through my shirt. What I felt was revulsion. That surprised me more than anything else had. I'd loved this woman enough to take my own career apart for her, and now I couldn't stand her hands on me.I pushed her off."Olivia. This is finished."It isn't as though I never gave you a chance.""I know yo

"I asked you, more than once, whether you were certain."You signed the termination without a second's hesitation."Every word of it landed, and the regret kept climbing, and there was no getting out from under it."I know I was wrong. I've left the other man. I'm not with him anymore."Please. Just tell me where he went.""I'm not going to."All I can tell you is that Mr. Reed is never coming back, and you're never going to see him again."She walked out of there hollowed out, and for weeks afterward she moved through her own life like a woman who'd already left it.Then she went to my mother.Mom took one look at her and started closing the door.Olivia went down on her knees on the step."Diane. Please."Mom stared at her for a long moment. Then the part of her that had loved this girl once got the better of her."What good does any of this do now? Ethan's gone."And I'll tell you something else. You don't deserve what he felt for you."You thought he quit the piano b

There was more after that.I'd written that I'd been cut too many times over the years, and that every single time I'd chosen to swallow it.That the Love Insurance was the last chance I had it in me to give her.Olivia understood all of it at once. She put a hand over her mouth and the tears kept coming, and the despair came up over her like water. She had always believed Ethan would go on loving her no matter what she did.She was only now finding out that his heart could be worn all the way through. She regretted it. She regretted every one of them. After the funeral, Olivia went home hollow. The pieces of my father's figurine were still on the floor where they'd fallen. She saw them and broke."I'm sorry, Ethan. I was wrong."Then a voice came out of the bedroom."Baby, I'll bring up the divorce in a little while. We'll have half her assets before long."It was Julian.Olivia went still, then moved toward the door.He was still going."I was going to string her alo

By the time Olivia reached the site, police and rescue crews were working the shoreline in the rain.An officer came over to her."Your husband was driving extremely fast, ma'am. We pulled the traffic-camera footage."He was doing at least a hundred and ten. The car lost control, went through the barrier, and went into the water."Officer Hutchins held up a sealed evidence bag."We found his phone on the roadway. He may have thrown it out trying to get help."Each sentence landed harder than the one before it.Her face emptied out. Her ears were ringing."No. That's not possible."That car has a driver-assistance system. It was supposed to protect him."Then she saw the crews working the water and ran at them."Ethan!"Please. Don't do this to me. Please be all right."That was the first moment Olivia understood what losing someone permanently might actually feel like. She dropped to her knees in the rain and cried until she couldn't breathe.Hutchins was still talking b

"Ethan, are you out of your mind? You actually hit Julian."Have I been too soft on you? Is that it? Give you an inch and you take the whole house."I barely heard her.I was still on my knees, looking at what was left of my father's figurine. Then one of her friends spoke up."Olivia, you can't let a man behave like that."Sloane leaned back with her drink."A man only learns when you teach him properly."Bree glanced toward the window. Rain was coming down hard enough to blur the glass."I've got an idea."Make him take the old car out. The one from the accident."Have him push it to a hundred and ten on the interstate. Didn't you say he's terrified of driving? That'd teach him."Olivia said nothing for a few seconds, and I could see her weighing it.Then she nodded."Fine. Maybe he needs one real lesson."Everything in me went still.Olivia knew exactly why I couldn't drive.I'd been behind the wheel the night of the crash that killed my father. Since then I'd avoid
