Chapter 2

Penulis: Lovelyn
They were pressed together like they'd been that way for years.

My chest went tight, and the hand holding the phone dropped to my side.

In ten weddings, Olivia had never once taken a picture like that with me.

"I'll go," I said.

Nathan nodded.

"All right, Mr. Reed. I'll set it up.

"Someone will come for you in three days. Use them to say your goodbyes."

The only family I had left in the world was my mother.

I took her out to dinner and told her I was leaving.

She cried.

Not because she wanted to stop me. Because she knew exactly what Olivia had taken.

"You knelt on a hotel floor in front of one of her investors so he wouldn't pull out on her."

She said it like an accusation, though it wasn't aimed at me.

"Remember that?"

I did.

"And when those people came after her, you went to them alone. By yourself, Ethan."

Her eyes moved to my right hand.

"That's why you can't close that hand right anymore. That's why you gave up the piano."

My throat tightened.

Before Olivia, I'd been a concert pianist. The stage was the one place in my life where everything made sense.

Then the hand was ruined keeping her safe.

She never knew any of it.

"She should know," Mom said. "If she knew what you gave up for her, she'd never forgive herself."

"She doesn't need to know."

I looked down at my hand.

"Those were my choices. I made them because I loved her.

"I just don't want to love her anymore."

Noise broke out near the entrance.

I looked over.

Olivia had come in wearing a formal dress with an armful of roses, and she was looking at Julian with a tenderness I'd spent eight years waiting for.

"Julian. Loving you is the one thing in my life I've never regretted."

I went still. The pain in my chest arrived a second later, all at once.

Eight years, and we'd never celebrated a single anniversary.

"I love you, Julian."

Then she kissed him.

Mom was out of her chair before I could stop her.

"Olivia!"

She crossed the room.

"How can you do this to my son?"

Olivia's face changed the second she spotted me. The warmth drained straight out of it.

"Ethan. What is this?

"You brought your mother down here to wreck my night?"

She was on me in three steps, fisting my shirt, teeth clenched.

"I'm telling you right now. Take her and get out. Or I swear I will never remarry you."

Then she shoved me.

My hip caught the table. I threw out a hand to catch myself and came down on a cast-iron skillet still hot from the kitchen.

The sound I made wasn't a word.

Mom got to me first. When she saw the burn, whatever was left of her patience went with it.

"Olivia! My son gave up everything he had for you, and this is what he gets?

"Do you even hear yourself?"

"Shut your mouth.

"What's between me and Ethan has nothing to do with you.

"And we've already worked it out. We're remarrying in a few days."

Then she shoved my mother too.

Mom's head hit the wall. She went down and didn't get up.

Something in me came apart.

"Olivia! You put your hands on my mother!"

My mother had loved her once. When Olivia was sick that winter, Mom sat up with her two nights running and drove ninety miles at dawn to get the prescription filled.

And this was where it had landed us.

Julian hurried over and pulled Olivia back, arranging his face into something wounded.

"Olivia, this is on me. We shouldn't have gone down to the city hall today. Of course he's angry."

Olivia's eyes went soft.

"Julian, none of this is your fault. He's the problem. He's selfish.

"I explained it to him. All of it. And he still dragged his mother here to make a scene."

I wasn't listening anymore. I was trying to get Mom up off the floor.

Then Olivia picked up a glass of wine and threw it in my face.

My skin lit up.

I'm severely allergic to alcohol. A splash on bare skin is enough to swell it shut.

She looked at me and there was still hope in it."Eth. Would you start over with me?"I answered gently."I'm sorry. I have a girlfriend."The door opened and Hannah Brooks came in.I'd met her overseas. She was the one who sat with me while I learned how to have a life again.Something went out of Olivia's eyes. The tears came faster."You really don't love me anymore?"I took Hannah's hand."No. I really don't."Everyone has to move forward eventually. Don't they."Hannah and I are getting married next month. You'd be welcome to come."I took the invitation out of my coat and held it out.Her tears came down onto the envelope. She had a hand pressed to her chest and she was shaking through all of it.She looked exactly the way I used to look. There'd been a time when all I wanted in the world was for her to stop divorcing me. She hadn't stopped. She'd gotten worse.Olivia bit down on her lip hard enough to draw blood and didn't seem to notice it.She only looked at

The company was afraid of what she might do to herself, so in the end they asked me to go and see her. When I got there she was in the bed, pale down to her lips. She saw me and smiled."I knew you'd come."You do remember me. Don't you."Eth, we loved each other once."I stayed near the door."I do remember you."The hope came up in her face all at once."But I don't love you anymore."The color went out of her. Her mouth started shaking."I know I hurt you. I know how many times."But I understand now. I divorced Julian. It's done."It's only going to be you and me from here on."She got out of the bed while she was talking and put her arms around me.Her tears went through my shirt. What I felt was revulsion. That surprised me more than anything else had. I'd loved this woman enough to take my own career apart for her, and now I couldn't stand her hands on me.I pushed her off."Olivia. This is finished."It isn't as though I never gave you a chance.""I know yo

"I asked you, more than once, whether you were certain."You signed the termination without a second's hesitation."Every word of it landed, and the regret kept climbing, and there was no getting out from under it."I know I was wrong. I've left the other man. I'm not with him anymore."Please. Just tell me where he went.""I'm not going to."All I can tell you is that Mr. Reed is never coming back, and you're never going to see him again."She walked out of there hollowed out, and for weeks afterward she moved through her own life like a woman who'd already left it.Then she went to my mother.Mom took one look at her and started closing the door.Olivia went down on her knees on the step."Diane. Please."Mom stared at her for a long moment. Then the part of her that had loved this girl once got the better of her."What good does any of this do now? Ethan's gone."And I'll tell you something else. You don't deserve what he felt for you."You thought he quit the piano b

There was more after that.I'd written that I'd been cut too many times over the years, and that every single time I'd chosen to swallow it.That the Love Insurance was the last chance I had it in me to give her.Olivia understood all of it at once. She put a hand over her mouth and the tears kept coming, and the despair came up over her like water. She had always believed Ethan would go on loving her no matter what she did.She was only now finding out that his heart could be worn all the way through. She regretted it. She regretted every one of them. After the funeral, Olivia went home hollow. The pieces of my father's figurine were still on the floor where they'd fallen. She saw them and broke."I'm sorry, Ethan. I was wrong."Then a voice came out of the bedroom."Baby, I'll bring up the divorce in a little while. We'll have half her assets before long."It was Julian.Olivia went still, then moved toward the door.He was still going."I was going to string her alo

By the time Olivia reached the site, police and rescue crews were working the shoreline in the rain.An officer came over to her."Your husband was driving extremely fast, ma'am. We pulled the traffic-camera footage."He was doing at least a hundred and ten. The car lost control, went through the barrier, and went into the water."Officer Hutchins held up a sealed evidence bag."We found his phone on the roadway. He may have thrown it out trying to get help."Each sentence landed harder than the one before it.Her face emptied out. Her ears were ringing."No. That's not possible."That car has a driver-assistance system. It was supposed to protect him."Then she saw the crews working the water and ran at them."Ethan!"Please. Don't do this to me. Please be all right."That was the first moment Olivia understood what losing someone permanently might actually feel like. She dropped to her knees in the rain and cried until she couldn't breathe.Hutchins was still talking b

"Ethan, are you out of your mind? You actually hit Julian."Have I been too soft on you? Is that it? Give you an inch and you take the whole house."I barely heard her.I was still on my knees, looking at what was left of my father's figurine. Then one of her friends spoke up."Olivia, you can't let a man behave like that."Sloane leaned back with her drink."A man only learns when you teach him properly."Bree glanced toward the window. Rain was coming down hard enough to blur the glass."I've got an idea."Make him take the old car out. The one from the accident."Have him push it to a hundred and ten on the interstate. Didn't you say he's terrified of driving? That'd teach him."Olivia said nothing for a few seconds, and I could see her weighing it.Then she nodded."Fine. Maybe he needs one real lesson."Everything in me went still.Olivia knew exactly why I couldn't drive.I'd been behind the wheel the night of the crash that killed my father. Since then I'd avoid
