Chapter 4

Nine Fifteen
I did not know how I had made it back to my apartment. Drained, I sat numbly on the sofa and did not move.

Jenna came home that evening. She had changed back into her cheap T‑shirt and carried a takeout order of the spicy wings I always loved, as if nothing had happened.

If I had not seen it with my own eyes, I would have believed everything that afternoon had been a nightmare.

"Ian, you're still up?" She walked over to hug me like she always did.

I turned aside to avoid her and stared at her blankly.

Jenna stiffened for a moment, then sighed and put on a helpless look.

"You misunderstood what happened at the club today. That was one of my big clients, and I was trying to land an investment deal.

"That guy is the investor's younger brother. He has a bit of a temper, and I only took his side for the sake of our future.

"Ian, if I can close this deal, I'll make a lot of money all at once, and you won't have to wear yourself out delivering food anymore."

With that, she went to get hot water so she could give me a foot soak.

I looked at her coldly. "Didn't you say you were at the warehouse? Why did you lie to me?"

She paused for a split second, then went back to acting natural.

"I wanted to wait until the deal was completely finalized before telling you. I wanted it to be a surprise.

"Ian, I know you feel wronged. I was too harsh with you today, but I was just putting on a show for them.

"No one means more to me than you do."

Watching her play the devoted girlfriend, I suddenly felt my stomach churn.

"Jenna, if you found out one day that you could live a good life without struggling this hard, would you leave me?"

She looked up at me and made a solemn promise.

"Never. Ian, you're my whole world."

I smiled and did not call her out.

While she went to fill the basin, I took a worn‑out notebook from the drawer. It was my ledger.

I quietly began to add up every cent I had spent on her over the last three years.

Just then, my phone rang.

It was Cody. Somehow, he had gotten my number, and he deliberately sent me a photo of him and Jenna at a wedding dress fitting.

In the photo, Jenna wore a pure white wedding gown while Cody, dressed in a white tuxedo, wrapped his arms around her from behind. They both smiled sweetly, and the backdrop was the most expensive bridal shop in Kingsport.

His message was full of provocation.

[Thanks for looking after her for three years. But a stand‑in is still just a stand‑in. Time for the placeholder to exit the stage.]

I stared at the fitting photo for a long time, until my eyes ached and burned.

In our second year together, I had talked to Jenna about getting married.

I held her in my arms and said, full of hope, "Jen, once we've saved up enough, let's get married.

"I don't need anything fancy. I'll just rent a regular suit, but you have to wear the most beautiful white wedding dress. Okay?"

She leaned against my chest and answered softly, "Okay, Ian. You'll be the most handsome groom ever."

Now she had put on the wedding dress I had dreamed of seeing her in, only it was for someone else.

As the memories came flooding back, my eyes began to burn.

Jenna came back with the water just then, still mapping out a fake future for us.

"Ian, once I have money, we'll get married. How about a destination wedding? You love the ocean, right? We could go to..."

The more she talked, the less I could hold back my tears. They dropped onto the screen and blurred the glaring smiles on their faces.

When Jenna saw me crying, she panicked at once.

She hurried to sit beside me, fumbling to wipe away my tears as she tried to comfort me incoherently.

"Ian, what's wrong? You don't like the idea of a destination wedding? Okay, then we won't go. We'll have the biggest, liveliest wedding in Kingsport. Please don't cry."

I pushed her hand away, turned my phone screen toward her, and slid it across to her along with the ledger.

Her face instantly went pale.

News that Wilder Group had lost its core investment and had its credit lines cut off sent shockwaves through the Kingsport business world. Its stock dropped 40 percent in three days. Partners pulled their money one after another, and the banks demanded repayment on their loans. Jenna's mother was so distraught that she had a stroke and was hospitalized, and her father seemed to age ten years overnight.Jenna had been standing in the rain outside the Colby Group building for three hours. She had begged the front desk more than a dozen times, and she had been turned away every time."Mr. Colby said he won't see you."Please leave."At 6:00 pm, when I walked out the front doors, Jenna lunged toward me."Ian! I was wrong!" She dropped hard to her knees on the wet pavement in front of me."I really know I was wrong! I'll pay you back every cent. I don't want Cody anymore. Please, just give me one more chance to take care of you, okay?"I gave her an indifferent glance."Ms. Wilder,

After the gala, Jenna blocked my way in the parking lot, her eyes red."Ian!" Her voice was hoarse. "Were you lying to me the whole time?"I leaned against my car and looked at her, my expression calm."You're obviously not some ordinary guy. So why did you live in that crappy rental apartment for three years? Why did you deliver food? Why...""Why did I pretend to be broke?"I finished the question for her and gave a short laugh. "Because I was stupid. I thought there was such a thing as love that had nothing to do with money. I wanted to find someone who didn't care about my money, and then tell her I'd love her whether she was rich or poor."I looked at Jenna, and my gaze turned cold. "Too bad I misjudged you."Jenna's lips trembled. "So you just watched me make a fool of myself in front of you?"My voice turned icy. "Jenna, did you forget that you pretended to be poor to fool me?"Jenna's expression stiffened."You played the broke girl, and I played the broke guy. That m

A month later, a business gala was held in Kingsport. It was one of the most important events of the year for the Kingsport business world, and everyone in attendance was the head of a major family company. As the heiress of the Wilder family, Jenna was naturally on the guest list. She stood in a corner holding a glass of champagne she had not touched, her expression cold and distant. She had lost a lot of weight over the past month. Her cheekbones jutted out, her eyes had sunken in, and her gown hung loosely on her frame. She had spent the entire month looking for me, yet it was as if I had vanished into thin air. My phone number had been canceled, the rental apartment had been vacated, and even my account on the delivery app had been deleted.Sometimes she wondered if I had gone back to my hometown. Maybe I had found some ordinary job. Maybe..."Jen, look at that guy."Cody tugged at her sleeve, his voice dripping with contempt. "How does he have the nerve to show up to a plac

Three hours later, I sat in front of a mirror at a high‑end styling studio and looked at the man staring back at me.My slightly overgrown hair had been trimmed into a sharp, clean cut and styled with gel for a polished, textured look. The marks left on my face by years of sun and wind had been carefully concealed, revealing the strong, handsome features that had always been there. The stylist brought out a black couture suit, and I stood up to put it on.The man in the mirror looked like a different person. He was no longer the Ian Colby who rode an electric scooter all over the city delivering food. He was Ian Colby, heir to Colby Group.Walter stood behind me and handed me a phone. "Sir, your father says Colby Group is ready for you whenever you want to come back."I took the phone and opened the photo album. At the very top was a picture I had taken three years ago, the last one I snapped at the front door of the Colby estate before I left with my suitcase.Back then, I had s

As Jenna looked at the fitting photo and the ledger, the color drained from her face. The face that had once made my heart race now held nothing but hypocrisy. She took a deep breath and reached for me, speaking fast to cover her guilt."Ian, let me explain! Yes, I lied to you, but I did it for our future!"My parents were forcing me into an arranged marriage. If I hadn't taken drastic measures and pretended to be poor, they never would've accepted you! I had no other choice! I did all of this for our future!"I looked at the face I had loved for three years and felt nothing but nausea. For our future? She had felt perfectly fine lying to me while she watched me run around in the wind and rain every day?She seemed to take my silence as a sign that I was softening, and she grew more confident."Don't worry. Even if I marry Cody, I'll never treat you badly. I'll take care of you for the rest of your life. I'll buy you a big house and give you a really good life! You'll never have
