The glowing tablet screen felt heavier than lead in Amelia’s hands.

She stared at the sharp, clear photograph of Diana Monroe–the woman who had held her hand at her father's funeral, the friend who had shared late-night coffee when the grief was too heavy, the person she trusted with her deepest secrets.

Diana.

"No..." Amelia whispered, her voice cracking as her throat grew tight. "There has to be a mistake, Ethan. Diana... she’s like a sister to me. She brought me dinner two nights ago!"

Ethan kept his expression respectful, but his voice was unwavering. "The bank transfers are tied directly to her personal account, Mrs. Kingsley. Every time you met her for lunch or mentioned where you were going, a transaction was flagged. She confirmed your location to The Dominion the night your father died, and she alerted them when you left the mansion yesterday."

A cold, sickening weight settled deep in Amelia's stomach. The world felt like it was crumbling all over again. First her uncle, and now her best friend. Everyone she had held close while mourning her father had been feeding off her tragedy for profit.

She staggered back a step, her heel catching on the pavement.

Alexander’s large, warm hand immediately caught her waist, pulling her gently against his chest before she could fall. He didn't offer empty words of comfort. He simply held her firm, providing a solid anchor in the middle of her collapsing world.

"I've got you," Alexander murmured softly into her hair.

Amelia leaned against him, her face buried in the lapel of his suit jacket. She didn't sob, but her shoulders shook with quiet, bitter rage. "Why, Alexander? Why would she do this to me?"

"Money, fear, pressure... people sell their souls for very little when pushed by the wrong forces," Alexander said softly, his chest rising and falling against her cheek. "I’m sorry, Amelia. I wish I could have spared you this."

Amelia pulled back after a long moment, wiping her eyes with a stern, sharp motion. She looked up at him, her green eyes filled with a fierce, cold light.

"Is she at her apartment right now?" Amelia asked.

Ethan checked his handheld monitor. "Yes. Our team has her apartment building surrounded. She doesn't know Victor was caught yet."

"Take me there," Amelia demanded.

Alexander hesitated, his brow furrowing. "Amelia, let my security team handle her. You’ve been through too much tonight."

"No," Amelia said firmly, taking Alexander's hand and looking him dead in the eye. "She looked me in the eye while helping the men who killed my father. I want to look her in the eye when she realizes it's over."

Alexander searched her face for a moment, seeing her unwavering strength. He gave a slow, respectful nod. "Alright. We go together."

Twenty minutes later, the armored SUV pulled up to the curb outside a quiet, brick apartment building in the residential district. Rain had begun to fall again, a soft sprinkle coating the tree-lined street.

Four plainclothes guards moved ahead, securing the quiet hallway on the third floor. Alexander walked right beside Amelia, his arm casually resting behind her waist, ready to react to any sudden threat.

Outside apartment 3B, Ethan slipped a master key into the lock. The latch clicked quietly, and the heavy wooden door swung inward.

Inside, the apartment was warm and brightly lit. Pop music played softly from a small speaker in the kitchen.

Diana Monroe stood at her marble kitchen island, humming to herself while pouring red wine into a crystal glass. She wore comfortable sweatpants and an oversized sweater–the picture of a normal, innocent young woman enjoying a quiet evening at home.

"Who's there?" Diana called out, turning around with a smile that instantly froze when her eyes landed on the doorway.

Amelia stepped into the apartment first, followed closely by Alexander's towering frame.

The wine glass slipped from Diana's fingers, shattering against the wooden floorboards, sending red liquid splashing across her white rug like blood.

"Amelia?!" Diana gasped, her voice high and panicked. She took a step back, her eyes darting frantically past Amelia to Alexander, then to the dark suit guards standing in her hallway. "What... what is going on? Why are these men in my apartment?"

Amelia walked forward slowly, stepping right over the broken glass and spilled wine. Her expression was completely devoid of warmth.

"You look nervous, Diana," Amelia said quietly, stopping three feet away from her. "Were you expecting a call from Uncle Victor instead?"

Diana’s face went dead white. All the color drained from her lips, and her eyes widened in pure terror. "Victor? I... I don't know what you're talking about, Amelia. Are you okay? Did something happen?"

"Stop lying!" Amelia snapped, her voice cutting through the apartment like a whip. "We have the bank logs, Diana! We have the phone records from the night my father died!"

Diana swallowed hard, backing up until her spine hit the kitchen counter. "Amelia... please... listen to me..."

"Eighteen months," Amelia said, tears finally welling in her eyes as her voice broke with pure heartbreak. "For eighteen months, I came to you crying! I told you about my nightmares! I told you how terrified I was of losing my mother! And every single time I turned my back, you called them!"

"They threatened me!" Diana suddenly burst out, her composure breaking into hysterical sobs as she slid down against the counter to her knees. "You don't understand, Amelia! They came to me first! They said if I didn't give them updates on your father, they would ruin my family! They paid off my brother's medical bills! I didn't have a choice!"

"You had a choice to tell me!" Amelia screamed, tears running down her face. "I would have protected you! My father would have protected you!"

"Your father was going down anyway!" Diana wept, covering her face with her shaking hands. "The Dominion controls everything! Nobody stops them, Amelia! Nobody!"

"I do," Alexander’s cold, powerful voice echoed from the doorway.

Alexander stepped forward, pulling a plain silver smartphone from his pocket. He tossed it onto the kitchen island in front of Diana.

"You're going to make one final call to your handler," Alexander commanded, his voice dark and deadly serious. "You are going to tell him that Amelia is alone at her father's old countryside cabin, terrified and hiding from the press."

Diana looked up through her tear-stained face, gasping for air. "They... they'll kill me if they find out I betrayed them!"

"If you don't make the call," Alexander said smoothly, leaning down so his icy blue-gray eyes were inches from hers, "you will spend the rest of your life in a federal prison for treason and conspiracy to commit murder. Make your choice, Diana."

Diana stared at the phone, her hands trembling violently. Knowing she was completely trapped, she reached up with a shaking hand and picked up the device.

An hour later, Amelia and Alexander sat in the back of the parked SUV down the street as two federal agents led a crying Diana away in handcuffs.

The rain had stopped completely, leaving the city quiet under a blanket of night clouds.

Amelia leaned her head against the cool headrest, her eyes staring blankly out the tinted window. She felt completely drained, exhausted to her very core.

A gentle warmth covered her cold fingers. Alexander folded his large hand over hers, his fingers intertwining with hers.

"It's over," Alexander said softly, his thumb gently stroking the back of her hand. "The trap is set for the head of The Dominion. We take them down tonight at the cabin."

Amelia turned her head to look at him. In the dim light of the streetlamps, his strong features looked softer, filled with an undeniable warmth that was meant only for her.

She remembered the cold night they stood in the master bedroom, when she had vowed never to love him. She remembered how quickly she had judged him, calling him a heartless corporate monster.

Slowly, Amelia turned her hand over, tightening her grip on his fingers.

"Thank you, Alexander," she murmured softly. "For standing by me when everyone else was selling me out."

Alexander looked down at their joined hands, a soft, rare smile breaking across his face. "I told you, Amelia. I'm never leaving."

He leaned in slowly, giving her time to pull away if she wanted to. But Amelia didn't move. When his warm lips gently pressed against her forehead, a deep sense of peace washed over her heart for the first time in three long years.

She leaned into his shoulder, closing her eyes as the heavy SUV started its engine, heading out toward the final battle at the countryside cabin.

The sweet smell of cinnamon and baked apples filled the air of the Sterling family dining room.It had been four weeks since the raid at the countryside cabin, and life was finally settling into a warm, comfortable rhythm. Amelia sat at the long mahogany dining table, watching her mother, Eleanor, ladle homemade vanilla soup over warm peach cobbler.Across the table sat Alexander. He had traded his sharp corporate suits for a simple navy sweater with the sleeves pushed up his forearms. He looked relaxed, his blue-gray eyes soft as he engaged in light conversation with Eleanor about restoring the estate's old glass greenhouse."You really don't have to help with the garden, Alexander," Eleanor said with a fond smile, placing a steaming bowl in front of him. "You run a multi-billion-dollar enterprise. Digging up soil on a Sunday afternoon seems a bit beneath your pay grade."Alexander smiled, taking a spoon and looking across at Amelia. "Nothing regarding this family is beneath me, Elea

Amelia breathed, her voice barely a whisper. "No... that makes no sense. Victor loved my father. He helped my mother arrange the funeral!"Alexander didn't look surprised. His blue-gray eyes hardened into flint, his jaw setting into a tight line as he looked out at Olivia. "Is he at the corporate tower or the press center?""The Sterling Enterprise main hall," Olivia replied, resting her arm against the open car door. "He called a live news conference. He claims you held Amelia hostage after forcing the marriage, and that you sent armed men to eliminate anyone who questioned you. He’s playing the heartbroken uncle to perfection."Amelia pulled back from Alexander, her head spinning. Victor Sterling had been her father's younger brother.
