The warm south wind blew through West End Avenue on Monday morning, melting the thick winter ice into running streams along the stone gutters. By six o'clock, the grey slush on the turnpike had turned into deep, heavy mud. The air felt softer, carrying the damp scent of wet earth and early spring, but the rapid thaw brought its own quiet danger to the old wooden buildings lining the riverbank.

Upstairs in the third-floor apartment, the day began with the familiar sounds of home.

  • She Refused to Love Her Husband   Blood in the Snow

"Put him down!" Amelia shrieked, her voice tearing raw in her throat. She threw herself forward off the rag rug, crawling on her knees across the cold floorboards. She reached frantically for the Emperor’s heavy leather boots, but a guard stepped into her path, slamming the wooden butt of his spear hard into her chest.Amelia collapsed backward, the air exploding out of her lungs in a sharp gasp. Pain flared white-hot through her injured shoulder, but she forced herself up onto her elbows, her hazel eyes locked onto her son.The Iron Emperor held baby Arthur in one heavy arm, the curved steel blade of his dagger resting lightly against the infant's wool blanket. Arthur began to cry, his high-pitched, helpless shrieks echoing off the cabin's stone walls."Look at him," the Emperor said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he looked down at the child. "A tiny, fragile thing. Yet his father bled an entire fortress dry just to keep him from my hands.""He is an infant!" Amelia wept, tears stre

  • She Refused to Love Her Husband   The Edge of the Abyss

The freezing river water rushed over Amelia’s knees, heavy and terrifyingly fast. She stood in the center of the sinking wooden skiff, her feet slipping on the slick floorboards as the boat pitched violently against the current. The roaring sound of the forty-foot waterfall grew deafening, filling her ears like thunder shaking the earth. White foam sprayed into the freezing air, blinding her as the river pulled the ruined craft closer and closer to the sudden drop."Hold on, Arthur!" Amelia screamed into the wind, though her own voice was swallowed entirely by the crash of the water. She pulled her baby boy tight against her chest, wrapping her body around him so completely that not a single drop of icy spray could hit his tiny face. She squeezed her eyes shut for a split second, praying with every ounce of love in her heart. She thought of Alexander’s bleeding hands, the way he had dragged his broken body through the fire just to keep this child safe. She could not fail him now.The

  • She Refused to Love Her Husband   The Edge of Darkness

The cellar was deathly silent except for the frantic sound of Amelia’s breathing. She dropped to her knees beside the straw bed, her hands trembling so violently she could barely feel for Alexander’s pulse. His skin was pale as ash, slick with cold sweat from the searing pain of the hot iron. His chest sat completely still."Alexander!" Amelia sobbed, slamming her hands flat onto his chest. She pressed down hard, over and over, ignoring the smell of charred leather and flesh rising from his ribs. "No! Breathe! You do not leave me here!""Amelia, step back!" Thomas ordered, his face covered in gray soot. He knelt on the other side of the bed and placed his thumb firmly against the side of Alexander’s neck. He waited three agonizing seconds, his jaw locked tight. "There's a flutter. It’s faint, but his heart is still trying to beat. His body went into deep shock from the heat.""He needs air!" Amelia cried. She leaned down, covering his cold lips with her own, forcing breath after breat

  • She Refused to Love Her Husband   The Wall of Flame

Thick green smoke burned Amelia’s throat like swallows of liquid fire.Coughing violently, she pressed Arthur’s nose tight against her cotton collar, using her own body to shield him from the stifling heat. The massive wooden rafter lay across the narrow doorway, roaring with bright chemical flames that ate through the dry oak wall like starving insects."Alexander!" Amelia cried, dropping to her knees beside him. Her vision swam in the hazy green air.Alexander lay on his side against the stone wall. The torn bandages around his chest were completely soaked through with fresh red blood, his face pale as chalk beneath the heavy layer of soot. Every breath he pulled into his lungs sounded like tearing paper."Leave me, Amelia..." Alexander rasped, his voice barely audible over the crackle of the blaze. His trembling fingers reached up, weakly touching Arthur’s tiny wool boot. "Take the baby... jump through the window...""I am not leaving you!" Amelia screamed, her voice breaking into

  • She Refused to Love Her Husband   Standing in the Gap

The cold morning air rushed into the ruined cottage through the shattered doorway. Splintered oak wood lay scattered across the floorboards.Amelia clutched Arthur against her chest with her good right arm, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She took a step back, positioning her body directly between Christian’s pistol and the wooden table where Alexander lay completely unconscious."Put the gun down, Christian," Evelyn pleaded, her voice trembling as she stepped toward her son. Tears welled in her eyes. "Look at what you're doing! This is your sister! This is your family!""Shut up, Mother!" Christian spat, his knuckles turning white around the iron handle of his pistol. His dark eyes were wild, bloodshot, and full of desperation. "Family meant something before she ruined everything! Before she turned her back on our name and chose a dead man!""Alexander isn't dead," Amelia said, keeping her voice steady despite the absolute terror gripping her soul. She locked eyes with h

  • She Refused to Love Her Husband   The Silent River

Dark river water slapped against the sides of the small wooden rowboat, but to Amelia, the whole world had gone dead silent."No," Amelia gasped, her voice barely a whisper before it broke into a ragged scream. "No! Alexander, look at me! Open your eyes!"She cradled baby Arthur tightly against her good arm and collapsed onto her knees beside Alexander’s motionless body. The wooden floorboards were slick with cold water and dark blood. She pressed her hand flat against his broad chest, right over his heart. There was nothing. No rise, no fall, no faint flutter beneath her trembling palm. His skin felt like ice."Marcus, do something!" Amelia shrieked, looking up at the captain with wild, terrified eyes. "You're a soldier! Fix him!"Captain Marcus knelt in the puddle of river water, his hands shaking as he pressed his thick fingers against the side of Alexander’s neck again. His face was gray in the pale moonlight. "Lady Amelia... his heart isn't beating. He lost too much blood at the
