Chapter 1

Author: Bright Lights
I had been coming to this hospital to donate blood for Nicole Hayes for ten years already. I was so familiar with the place that I could find the transfusion room even with my eyes closed.

This was the eleventh year. While I was donating blood, our conversations had finally led to wedding preparations.

However, when I handed Nicole a selection of potential wedding venues, she did not even bother to lift her eyes to look at me. She responded with clear impatience, brushing it off casually.

Then, the male nurse assisting with the transfusion, Jayden, suddenly spoke, “Are you two getting married because of the blood donations?

“The hospital has a donor compensation policy. Each donation comes with a thousand-dollar stipend. Over the last ten years, this guy must have made at least $200,000 off you.

“Miss Hayes, you wouldn’t get tricked into marrying someone because of emotional pressure while unknowingly being treated like a cash cow, would you?”

His voice was not loud, but it was just enough for Nicole’s parents, who were accompanying her, to hear.

In an instant, I could feel their gazes on me change. Even Nicole’s expression turned colder.

I was about to explain that I had never taken a single cent of that so-called compensation, but before the words even left my mouth, Jayden had already removed the needle. “All done.

“Oh, right. Miss Hayes, Dr. Collins asked you to go to the consultation room after your transfusion.”

Nicole did not even glance at me when she heard that. She stood up and followed Jayden toward the consultation room.

Her parents shot me a glare before following them out as well.

I had just finished donating blood. My body was still weak, with barely any strength left in me. I could only sit there, watching them leave.

I lowered my head and looked at the wedding venue options still open on my phone. I could not help but let out a bitter smile.

Me, using Nicole as a cash cow and making $200,000 off her?

In all these ten years, I did not gain a single cent. In fact, I had poured nearly all my savings into treating her illness!

Nicole and I started dating in our second year of university.

Her family was local, and her parents strongly opposed her relationship with someone from out of town like me. They tried to break us up more than fifty times.

At their worst, during my campaign for student council president, they filed a complaint against me, accusing me of being vain and clinging to someone above my status.

Although the accusation was false, I was kicked out of the election because of it.

After that incident, Nicole argued fiercely with her parents and even threatened to cut ties with them if they continued interfering.

“I gave her my entire youth and sacrificed my career. In my most helpless and most broken moments, did she ever feel even a shred of pity for me?”I looked up at Nicole, whose face had turned deathly pale, and said each word with absolute clarity, “No. She didn’t.“She mocked me behind my back, saying my complexion was sallow and my body gaunt, calling me shabby and a burden, saying I wasn’t good enough for her. She accepted everything I gave her without hesitation, while privately belittling everything about me.“She never once had sympathy for the man who fought for her with everything he had. So why should I show mercy to her now?”Nicole slowly lifted her head when she heard this. Her voice trembled with disbelief and grievance, “Evan, do you really have to be so calculative?”“Yes.” I met her gaze coldly. “I do.”If I did not keep score, I would be betraying the ten years I lost.I would not withdraw the lawsuit. In the end, the court delivered its verdict. Nicole and her

Next, I released ten years’ worth of bank transfers, spending records, and payment receipts.“For the past decade, I didn’t take a single cent from Nicole. Instead, I spent nearly all my savings, around $300,000 in total, on her medical treatment and medication. I almost gave up my career and pushed my body to its limits just to keep her alive.”After that, I played the recording I had secretly kept of Nicole when she was drunk. From the phone, her voice came through clearly. She was complaining about my yellowed complexion and gaunt body, expressing disgust at my decade-long presence, calling me a burden, and admitting that she only agreed to marry me because she needed my blood, treating it as a reluctant compromise. After all the evidence was presented, the livestream fell completely silent.I looked into the camera and continued, “For ten years, I donated blood without compensation, ruined my health, and sacrificed my future, all for this relationship with Nicole. And what I r

They also claimed that after receiving a huge sum of money, I immediately turned cold, abandoned my chronically ill girlfriend, and ran away. I was completely ungrateful and heartless. To make their story more convincing, they attached Nicole’s severe anemia diagnosis report and years of hospital receipts. On top of that, they went completely insane and leaked all my personal information—my full name, phone number, home address, and workplace—in an attempt to incite online harassment against me.Their posts spread rapidly, climbing to the top of trending lists within just a few hours. Some users recognized Mrs. Hayes and remembered their family’s earlier behavior, speaking up for me in the comments and exposing their lies. However, as the post continued to spread, a flood of uninformed strangers joined in. After being misled by the Hayes family’s emotional narrative, they unleashed a wave of insults and attacks against me.[My goodness, this guy is evil! He stole $200,000 from hi

That sentence was enough to leave Nicole completely speechless. She bit her lip awkwardly, then looked at me pitifully and said, “Evan, I know you’re angry with me, but can you please help me for a bit for the sake of our past relationship? It doesn’t have to be twice a month. Once is fine. The other time, I can use hospital blood bank supplies.“As for the compensation money, I don’t want it. You can keep all of it. How about that?”I let out a cold laugh. “Nicole, you really have some nerve.”I did not bother wasting another second on her. I sidestepped her and walked toward the company entrance.Unexpectedly, she grabbed my arm and refused to let go.“If you won’t donate blood, then just return the $200,000 you made off me,” added Nicole.I did not argue further. I simply called security and had her removed, and instructed them not to allow her into the company again.I thought that would be the end of it. However, she came to my home instead. This time, she brought her mot

[That family is really ungrateful. They’re utterly heartless!]Reading through the messages from strangers expressing sympathy for me, I felt a warm surge in my chest. Not long after, many of my colleagues also saw the trending local post and recognized that the Evan mentioned in the video was me.Messages started pouring in.[Evan, I finally understand why you were always so pale and exhausted before. You were donating blood for ten years! You really didn’t take care of yourself at all!][When you come back, we’ll take you out for a good meal. We’ll help you build your health back up.]Miss Warren even sent an entire box of supplements directly to the branch office, insisting I take them regularly.Grateful as I was, I still could not help but ask Jake why Jayden would think the Hayes family was wealthy in the first place.Jake replied with a shaking-head emoji.“No idea. The Hayes family doesn’t wear luxury brands or drive fancy cars. I honestly don’t know how he misread the

I already expected Jayden to give up halfway. Still, there was one thing I still could not understand. He was young and had a stable job. Why would he abandon an easy, comfortable life just to attach himself to a stranger and donate blood for her?It did not make sense. There was no way it was purely out of kindness. With that lingering doubt, I threw myself fully into the new project at the branch office.Once I was completely free from the burden of blood donation, my condition improved day by day.The dizziness and fatigue that used to hit me after a few hours of desk work were completely gone. My mind became clearer, sharper, and my energy surged. My efficiency more than doubled.Within just half a month, I successfully completed all the closing work for the first phase of the new project. After reviewing my report, Mr. Yates’s tone was full of approval.[Evan, I’ve been watching your performance lately. Keep this up! Once the branch project is fully launched, I’ll priorit
