Chapter 1

Wade's POV

At dinner, I brought out the last dish, set it down, and dropped into my seat beside my wife, Vanessa Sutton.

Before I even touched my fork, her brother Darren jumped in. "A couple days ago at a reunion, I heard this guy say his brother-in-law bought him a luxury condo when he got engaged—downtown, huge place, fully paid, fully furnished, just move in.

"And another dude? Dirt poor family, but his sister married some rich heir. Right after graduation, boom—a supercar. He totaled it in two days, and the guy didn't even care. Just bought him another."

Darren laid it on thick, eyes sliding to me the whole time.

Yeah. This was aimed straight at me.

He'd been spoiled his whole life. Dropped out of middle school, stayed home gaming, living off his parents. Now he was thirty—never worked a day, never dated. No one even bothered setting him up.

Until two months ago. He met some girl in a game and went all in on a long-distance thing. Sending her food, cash, everything. Already talking about meeting up and getting married.

I warned him about online scams. At two-fifty, he took it as me saying no attractive girl would ever want him. We blew up, and he hadn't spoken to me since.

So yeah, this whole act? Meant to get under my skin.

I ignored him and focused on Vanessa, placing food on her plate.

"Honey, don't you love roasted branzino? Try this."

Vanessa—who usually loved roasted branzino—picked up her fork, then paused when her mom, Jennifer, coughed beside her.

She set it back down. "Not in the mood. I'm not really hungry."

Something felt off. I paused mid-bite. "Jennifer, is something wrong with the food?"

We'd been married five years. Every holiday, I handled the groceries and cooking. I knew their tastes and restrictions by heart.

There shouldn't've been any mistakes.

Jennifer shot me a sideways look, a faint, mocking smile playing on her lips.

"Wade, I married my daughter to you to gain a son-in-law, not some clueless cook. Darren just went on and on—didn't you hear a word?"

Yeah, she was coming at me, but I kept it steady. "Since Vanessa and I got married, I've treated you like my own mom and Darren like my own brother.

"I've helped whenever I could. I even lined up over a dozen job opportunities for him.

"And three years ago, when he got hooked on online gambling, I paid off the twenty grand he owed—"

I didn't get to finish.

Darren chucked a wineglass at me, eyes twisted with a sneer. "Other guys hook their wife's brother up with houses and cars. Mine won't shut up about covering a lousy twenty grand.

"Wade Watson, transfer your house to me today, or I swear, I'll make my sister divorce you."

Ignoring the cut on the back of my hand, I froze.

"Darren... what kind of joke is this? You want my house?"

Bad luck didn't come alone.Jennifer was cooking when her vision went black. She dropped straight to the floor.Paul freaked and rushed her to the hospital. After the exam, the doctor didn't sugarcoat it—a sudden cerebral hemorrhage. Critical. She needed surgery right away.Cost? At least $100,000.For the Suttons, that number might as well have been impossible.Paul sat with it for a long time, then finally called Vanessa."Vanessa, your mom had a cerebral hemorrhage. She needs surgery—$100,000."Vanessa stayed quiet for a long time. "Dad, where am I supposed to get that kind of money?""I don't care. If you can't bring it back, your mom can just wait to die!"Vanessa stood in Borevia's cold wind, shaking. She had nothing left. The $300 she brought was long gone—food, rides, all of it. Now? Not a single dollar. She had no one to turn to.By some cruel twist, she ended up at an illegal agency and signed on as a surrogate. But her body couldn't handle it.The agency didn'

"I'm just stating facts." Helen stayed calm. "Your family pushed him to sign over the house, even at the cost of your own child."Everyone at the company saw how much he gave. He's just protecting his rights now. He didn't do anything wrong."She turned to me and handed me a tissue. "Let's go."I nodded, grabbed the folder, and walked off without a second thought.Vanessa ran after me, yelling, "Wade Watson! Stop! You're ungrateful! You used me and dumped me! I won't let you get away with this!"I didn't turn back. Didn't slow down. After that, she started making scenes outside the company and my apartment.Every morning around seven, she'd block the entrance, crying as people walked by."Everyone, look! Wade's an ungrateful bastard! When he was broke, my family carried him! Now he's got money, he ditched me and wants to drive us into the ground!"She clutched our wedding photo, telling anyone who'd listen I was heartless and Helen was a homewrecker. At first, people gathered

She probably didn't expect me to change this much in two weeks."I came to talk," Vanessa said, soft. "I know I was wrong."I took a sip of coffee. Said nothing."I wasn't thinking back then. I listened to my mom, pushed you to sign over the house, and ended the pregnancy." Tears slid down her cheeks. "I shouldn't have treated you like that or taken you for granted. Not once. I've regretted it every day since the divorce."She leaned in a little."You're doing well now, right?" She looked at me. "I saw that woman. She's really beautiful. She treats you well...""My life has nothing to do with you." My voice stayed flat. "You didn't come all the way to Borevia just to say this, did you?"Vanessa wiped her tears, voice shaking. "Wade, my family's falling apart. Darren got scammed, and most of the house money's gone. That old widower found out I can't have kids and wants his $10,000 back. And now your lawyer's asking for over $100,000. We can't pay that."She looked straight at me

"You're solid. You'll get better opportunities here in Borevia," she added.I nodded, honestly grateful. After work, I kept sorting every dollar I'd spent on the Suttons over five years—Vanessa's living costs, money handed to her mom, Darren's online debts I'd covered, plus all the random extras.Total? Over $100,000.I printed everything, built a file, and went to a solid law firm. The lawyer looked it over. Most of it could be recovered legally.***Third-Person POVA few days later, a lawyer's letter arrived at the Sutton house.Jennifer lost it the second she saw it. "That heartless bastard! When did we ever treat him wrong? He married my daughter—wasn't he supposed to support us? And now he wants his money back? He's trying to kill us!"Her wailing carried outside. Neighbors gathered, whispering, pointing.Paul stood off to the side, face tight with anger. "Enough. You're making a scene. If you hadn't spoiled Darren—if you hadn't pushed Vanessa to end the pregnancy to p

Darren collapsed to the floor, face pale.It finally hit him—Lily was a scammer. The meetups, the wedding talk... all fake. Just a setup to take his money. But he had a record for illegal online gambling. If he went to the police, he wouldn't be able to explain it clean. He clenched his teeth and swallowed it.Bad news didn't come alone.Early the next morning, two strangers showed up at the door."Where's Vanessa Sutton? I'm Victor Cole's rep. My client heard she can't have kids, so the engagement's off. Return the $10,000 deposit."Jennifer panicked. "What do you mean she can't have kids? Don't believe rumors. Vanessa's perfectly healthy.""Healthy?" The man sneered and pulled out a medical report. "We got this from the hospital. It clearly says her uterine lining is too thin for pregnancy. My client isn't marrying someone who can't have children. Return the money, or we take legal action."The Suttons couldn't come up with $10,000. Most of the house money was gone—scammed b

"No way. That coward actually went through with it?" Jennifer snapped. "He's just trying to piss us off. Give it a few days—he'll come crawling back, begging to fix things."Darren grabbed the divorce decree and tossed it on the floor. "Who does he think he is? Without Vanessa, who's gonna marry him? He's bluffing. I'll call him right now—make him get back here and sign over the house."He pulled out his phone and dialed.Call failed.Vanessa dropped onto the couch, tears running nonstop. "Mom... does Wade really not want me anymore? He's never treated me like this."Paul kicked the coffee table. "Crying won't fix anything. Text him. Tell him if he doesn't hand over the house, we'll show up at his job and make a scene so he can't work."Vanessa grabbed her phone, unblocked Wade, and tried to text him.Nothing went through.Darren paced, restless. Then it hit him—the family location share. He pulled it up.Wade's location popped up... thousands of miles away in Borevia."That
