One Week LaterMonica's P.O.V. We are preparing to be sworn in as the king and queen of deer and horse shifters. We've spent a lot of time with our parents and learning about what this means, but they didn't even know much because we're the first king and queen. Representatives from herds all over the country are coming to witness our crowning. I look at myself in the mirror and sigh. I still don't feel like a queen. I'm wearing a beautiful, off-the-shoulder, shimmering silver gown that's floor-length with a slit up to my thigh. It hugs all my curves in the right places and shows off my cleavage in a tasteful way, yet I feel like a little girl playing dress-up. "Monica, are you almost ready?" my mom asks. I take a deep breath and walk out of the bathroom. She and Kaitlyn gasp, and tears pool in their eyes. Am I so hideous that I'm bringing them to tears? "Oh, you're so beautiful," Kaitlyn says, walking over and kissing my cheek. My mom just continues to stare at me. "Mom?" I
Monica's P.O.V. I can't believe this man is supposed to be my uncle. Why does there always have to be a bad seed? Julie, true to herself, smiles at Nick. "So you're the one who's going to be king? Well, I guess that makes me your queen," she says. Nick scoffs at her and walks behind her chair. "So you want to be my queen?" He asks. She looks up at him and nods. I see it coming, but she's too dumb to realize what he's doing. He snaps her neck as though it's nothing. Austin seems unaffected by watching his daughter being killed. "We did as you asked, so let me free and do as you promised," Austin says. I can't believe he thinks he's in a position to make demands. Nick smirks at him and walks behind his chair, patting him on the head. "I knew you'd be the perfect little rat. Give you a little cheese, and you'll do whatever I want. What always happens to rats when they're done being used? Death by poison." I don't know exactly what Nick does, but I assume he uses magic because Austin
Monica's P.O.V. I look at Julie and feel like ripping the skin off her face. How dare she think she's better for Eli than me because she's a horse? "Thank you for showing yourselves. I don't know how you woke up so quickly from my drug, but now it's time for you both to die." Austin looks between us as he stands in front of his daughter. "Get them, Daddy, so I can get Eli. Don't worry, doe bitch, I'll take care of him for you." The rage inside of me as she speaks makes my body tingle. I don't know what's happening until I see flames coming from my fingers. "What exactly do you think you're going to do? From what I hear, you're the whore of the herd. You're going to need to do more to beat me than spread your legs." I say, walking toward her and Austin with my dad at my side. Despite how strong they're pretending to be, they begin backing up. "You're right. I have been with many men, but Eli was the best of them all. Let me tell
Monica's P.O.V. Just as Eli and I are moving from the couch to the bedroom, I get a mindlink from my mom. It's been so long since she mindlinked me that it feels weird. However, what she says makes me freeze."Monica, get out of the building. Austin drugged your dad and me. He plans on killing you and having Eli mate with someone else. Please save yourself." I gasp and look at Eli. "What the fuck? Is this a trick? Are you and your dad setting me up?" I ask him, backing away. He looks confused. "What do you mean? What happened?" He asks, walking toward me."I think we can trust him. Tell him the truth." Holly says. She always has good instincts. "My mom just mindlinked me and said that I need to get out of the building. Austin drugged them and plans to kill me so you can mate with someone else." I tell him as I run over to the couch and throw my clothes on. Eli does the same. "I knew he took our mating too easily, but when he was so calm in the cave, I thought maybe what he sai
Monica's P.O.V. All I can hear is screaming. When I try to find the source, I realize I'm the one screaming. When Cypress aimed the gun, he pointed it at me, and I froze, but the bullet never hit me. I stop screaming and look around. Who was hit? I don't see anyone bleeding or injured, but everyone is staring at me with wide eyes. "What?" I ask Eli. He points to my chest. I look down, and the bullet is there. It's smashed as though it hit something hard. I reach up, pull it off, and toss it to the ground. It didn't leave a mark on me. "How is that possible?" Eli asks, putting his hand on my chest where the bullet had been. "It's her magic; it protected her," my dad replies. I would love to ask more about this, but we have a bunch of stallions and bucks ready to attack. However, they don't look too sure of themselves now. "As you can see, they have already marked each other and are fully mated, so there's nothing you can do to stop them from leading the herds," Austin tells the
Monica's P.O.V. I have so many questions for this man who claims to be my father, but there's no time to ask. I don't know what we're running from, but whatever it is, I can hear them behind us. I'm thinking we should shift, but the man leads us into a cave. We go inside, and a giant concrete door slides shut. What is this, an Indiana Jones movie? It's dark inside, but he pulls out a flashlight and lights several lanterns hanging on the walls of the cave. "I'm sorry about that, but I had to get you away before they got to you," he says, looking at me. "Before, who got us, and what do you mean you're my father? My mom said he was killed." Eli puts his arm around me. "That's what we had to tell people. There's a lot that you don't know, and we couldn't tell you for your own protection. When she made you leave the herd, you were never alone. I was always watching over you. I just didn't let you see me." He says, walking toward me. "I think it's time to tell me the truth, don't y
