LOGINSalome’s POV
“I’m perfectly fine, really,” Clementine said, resting her hand on the seat as she caught her breath.
We stood in the lobby, a tired, messy group. The day had left four of us covered in mud and smelling like hard work. We dropped Jeremiah and Richard off so they could head up first, but the rest of us weren't far behind. My legs felt like lead weights as I stepped into the elevator. Between the grime on my skin and the ache in my muscles, all I could think about was a bed. I wanted to crawl under the covers and stay there for a few days.
“Aiden, would you mind using the shower in Richard’s room?” Clementine asked, breaking the silence of the rising elevator. “Our suite only has one bathroom. If all three of us wait in line, the last person is going to be washing in cold water.”
Jeremiah’s posture went rigid. He turned his head slowly, giving Aiden a look that could have frozen water. “You’re staying in the same room as Salome?”
Aiden’s neck turned a deep shade of red. “It is a suite, Jeremiah. It has multiple rooms.”
“There are doors between us,” Clementine added, rolling her eyes. “It isn't like they are sharing a mattress. You need to relax.”
Jeremiah didn't look relaxed. His jaw was tight, a muscle jumping in his cheek as he looked at the assistant. “Gia, get Aiden his own room. Do it now.”
“He can just crash with me,” Richard offered, stepping in before the tension snapped. “My room has two beds, and there is plenty of space.”
Aiden shifted from one foot to the other. He kept cutting his eyes toward me, and it was obvious he didn't want to be pushed out of our shared space. Jeremiah noticed it too. His eyes narrowed, tracking every look Aiden sent my way.
“That works. Aiden stays with you, Richard,” Jeremiah said. His voice was flat and left no room for anyone to argue. “That way, you can keep a close eye on him.”
Aiden opened his mouth, likely to protest, but Clementine shook her head at him. “Drop it,” she whispered. “It isn't worth the fight.”
The elevator doors chimed and slid open. We stepped out, but Aiden still tried to walk toward our door. He didn't get far. Richard reached out, his large hand landing firmly on Aiden’s shoulder, and physically steered him toward the other end of the hall.
“Step this way, buddy,” Richard said, his tone cheerful but his grip firm.
Clementine let out a tired laugh as she watched Richard haul her brother away. “I’m glad Richard is here. He’s the only one who can actually keep my brother in line.”
“I just want to be clean,” I said, sighing as Clementine swiped the key card against the lock.
We stepped into the room, and the cool air hit my face. Clementine went straight for the small fridge in the corner. “You go first,” she said, pulling out a bottle of water. “I am so thirsty I might drink every bottle in this fridge. I don't even care what the hotel charges for them.”
“Just leave one for me,” I called out, already heading for the bathroom.
I shut the door and stripped off my ruined clothes. The water was steaming hot, just the way I liked it. I spent a long time under the spray, using enough lavender soap to mask the scent of the woods and the mud. When I finally stepped out, the room was thick with white steam. I wrapped myself in a thick robe and tied a towel around my damp hair.
I opened the door, feeling a little more human. “All yours,” I told Clementine.
She hurried past me while I went to my bedroom to find something clean. I pulled on my favorite jeans and a soft blue shirt. I was halfway through drying my hair when my phone buzzed on the nightstand. I picked it up, and my heart took a sudden dive into my stomach.
Jeremiah: I just ordered plenty of food. Come up to my room and eat with me.
I read the text four times. My mouth felt dry, and my pulse started to race against my ribs. I didn't know what to say. I felt bad about leaving my friends, but the idea of a quiet meal sounded much better than going out to a loud restaurant. Besides, a part of me really wanted to see him. Even though he could be difficult, he had been my main source of comfort during the rough parts of the day.
I finished my hair, still feeling indecisive. I walked into the main area of the suite just as Clementine came out of the bathroom, wrapped in a towel. I showed her the message and told her what he asked.
“Go,” Clementine said, giving me a little nudge and a wink. “Don't worry about us. I’ll just have Aiden and Richard come over here and we’ll order our own food. Go spend time with your man.”
I felt heat creep into my cheeks. “He is not my man,” I mumbled.
I grabbed my key and slipped out of the room before she could tease me more. The ride up to the penthouse felt like it took hours. My mind was a mess, switching between excitement and the urge to run back to my room. By the time I reached his door, my hands were shaking slightly.
I knocked, and the second the sound echoed in the hallway, I felt a wave of regret. I should have stayed downstairs. But before I could turn around, the door swung open.
I looked up at him and swallowed hard.
“You actually came,” Jeremiah said, his voice low.
Salome’s POV"The international investors are all seated, and the registration logs are open for your final validation, Chairperson," Benedict said.He stepped away from the double glass doors, keeping his head bowed as he took his position behind my right shoulder.I sat majestic at the head of the massive mahogany boardroom table. The polished glass surface stretched out before me, reflecting the sharp white glare of the overhead lighting fixtures. The room was completely silent. Hundreds of executives, elder pack council representatives, and global syndicate investors sat in long, tight rows along the perimeter walls, their eyes fixed entirely on my face. No one moved. No one whispered.I picked up the primary ledger file from the center stack. The paper felt crisp and heavy against my fingers.Clementine stood by the heavy glass entrance doors. She wore a sharp black blazer, a bright, triumphant smile breaking across her face as she lifted a thick parchment document. The paper bore
Jeremiah’s POV "The medical transport vehicle just left the lower perimeter fence," Benedict said.He leaned against the rain-streaked glass of the garage exit booth, his eyes fixed on the retreating red tail lights.I did not turn my head to watch the car vanish into the damp city streets. My hand stayed in my pocket, my fingers curled around my encryption token. "Is the driver moving him straight to the private wing?""Yes," Benedict said. He looked at his hand device, sliding his thumb across the panel to lock the tracking loop. "Barnabas has been completely silent since the fated bond snapped. The medics said his pulse is stable, but his inner wolf is entirely unresponsive. He is catatonic." Sovereign let out a deep, satisfied breath inside my mind. The ancient wolf settled down into the dark corners of my thoughts, his long teeth disappearing behind his lips. The territorial threat was over. The rival was broken."The Richardson name is officially off the main registry," Benedict
Salome’s POV"Look closely at what you are losing, Barnabas," I said.I held the thick parchment paper between my thumb and forefinger. The official ink of the marriage certificate looked dark under the flickering bulbs of the concrete corridor.Barnabas stayed on his knees, his palms flat against the damp floorboards. His teeth bared into a weak, desperate line as he looked up."Salome, please. We can delete the files. We can rebuild the drawing room at the villa. Just drop the charter claim.""The charter claim is already processed," I said.I looked down at his shaking shoulders. I did not feel the old grief. I did not feel the stinging heat that used to crowd my chest when he came home smelling of cheap vanilla. There was only a cold, smooth space behind my ribs.I stepped forward, my good leg taking the weight while my injured thigh muscle throbbed with a dull, rhythmic ache.Barnabas reached his hand out toward my shoe. His fingers stopped an inch from the leather, his knuckles g
Jeremiah’s POV "The elevator shafts are completely dead, Alpha," Benedict said. He sprinted past me on the wet concrete layout. His leather soles made a sharp slapping sound against the floorboards as he took the stairs three at a time. I did not stop to check his position. My hand gripped the heavy iron rail of the staircase, my weight shifting instantly as I pushed upward into the narrow corridor. The damp air from the open parking bays below carried the scent of rain and old motor oil. Sovereign was fully awake inside my head, his silent roar vibrating behind my teeth until the skin across my forehead felt tight. The beast wanted blood. He wanted to snap the bones of the man who had dared to cross our boundary lines. "Keep your teeth behind your lips, Sovereign," I growled back in my thoughts. We reached the third-floor landing in less than twenty seconds. The fluorescent bulbs along the wall flickered twice, buzzing like angry flies against the concrete ceiling. Barnabas sto
Salome POV "The brass key is sticking in the lock, Salome," Clementine said. She turned the iron loop with both hands, her knuckles cracking in the quiet corridor. The smell of old paper and dust filled the narrow space between the storage shelves.I leaned my weight on my good leg, my injured thigh throbbing from the long walk up the stairs. "Give it a firm twist to the left. The internal pins are old."The lock gave a heavy, metallic snap. Clementine pulled the metal safety drawer open, her fingers sliding inside to extract a bundle of thick parchment sheets."This is the original file from fifteen years ago," she said, laying the papers flat on the steel table. "Look at the registration stamps at the top of the deed."I stepped closer, my shoes scuffing the grey floor tiles. I ran my fingers over the dry paper. The Vane family crest was pressed into the corner, but beneath the dark ink, the original layout lines showed a different boundary marker."They altered the grid coordinates
Barnabas’s POV "Get inside the car before the local patrol counts the minutes we have been idling by this kerb," Portia shouted. I did not move from the shadow of the structural awning. The cold rain came down in hard, straight sheets, splashing off the black tarmac and soaking through the fabric of my leather shoes. I tried to strike my silver lighter, but my thumb kept slipping against the damp metal wheel. The small flame died instantly. I tossed the useless piece of metal onto the wet concrete path and stared through the tinted passenger window of the sedan. Portia leaned across the front seat, her hand slamming against the passenger door lock to pop the plastic tab. Her face looked completely distorted behind the glass, her eyes wide with a frantic, pulsing energy that made my stomach turn. "I am not going back to the drawing room, Portia," I said, stepping closer to the car frame. "The drawing room is empty anyway," she hissed, her voice rising over the steady drum of the do
Salome’s POVThe heavy, metallic scent of cedar and cold rain hit me before I even turned around. I knew that smell. It belonged to the man who was currently ruining my life."You really don't know when to stay away, do you?" Barnabas’s voice was a low growl behind me.I didn't give him the satisfac
Salome’s POV“Is that the Vane girl, the one sitting so close to Barnabas?” I asked, though I already knew the answer.Portia Vane didn’t try to hide. She was the daughter of a powerful Alpha, and she carried herself like she owned the pavement beneath her designer boots. Across the parking lot, her
Salome’s POV"You look like you're drowning in paperwork, Barnabas," I said, my voice as smooth as the polished mahogany of his desk.I didn't wait for an invitation. I just walked in. The door clicked shut, sealing us in the quiet of the Alpha’s office. I kept my face neutral, a perfect mask of the
Salome’s POV“Does it sting when I apply the pressure here?”Healer Beatrice moved my head to the side with a light touch. The room smelled like lemon cleaner and old herbs. I sat on the hard paper of the exam table while she dabbed at the jagged red line near my hairline.“I’m fine, Beatrice. It’s
