Chapter 1

Blaire's POV

It was the greatest event of the year, the twenty-first Warriors' Anniversary. Preparations were going on, and I was pulled in between to assist with the setup, food, and to offer help to make sure there wasn't any boredom. The greatest thing about everything was that I was going to meet my mate. The thought and excitement were all over me.

I sat across from my brother Noah and some other guys seated around the table while they watched him brag about winning and celebrate without even knowing how the event was going to turn out. I filled their cups with drinks and sat close by while listening to their conversation.

"I know this might be the toughest Warriors' Anniversary because of the reward, but I'm gonna win with my eyes closed," Noah shouted and exchanged handshakes with the guys beside him.

They roared with laughter, and my gaze drifted to Jake, who was nodding, trying his best not to exclude himself from the conversation. I shook my head at Noah's words, but the worst was yet to come. He tapped the tip of his glass cup slowly to get everyone's attention.

The place fell silent, everyone leaning closer, waiting to hear what Noah was about to say while they slowly sipped on their drinks. I was getting tired of everything because I had been busy almost all day serving snacks and drinks. I didn't even have time for myself.

"This guy has nothing to say, everyone. The Nightmoon only know how to brag," a guy from the farthest corner said. "We all know they're the most powerful pack this year because they have the war book."

The entire crowd burst out with laughter as they made gestures toward Jake and Noah. I was tempted to say something, but I had no ground among them. My words would only make things worse in the process.

"You guys think because we have the war book that's why we've been winning, but I don't need a war book to win. The Nightmoon are going to win the second war book!" Noah shouted. "I challenge you to bring the toughest, mightiest men, and I promise we'll still win."

I decided to excuse myself for some fresh air in one of the nearby gardens. The air was fresh, blowing through my hair and making me close my eyes for a while to breathe. I decided to walk around while watching some of the guys outside.

But unknowingly to me, I began to walk further into the woods, my hand brushing against the beautiful flowers. As I continued down the path, I could hear the sound of someone moaning in pleasure nearby. But to my surprise, when I came closer and caught what was happening, my heart broke into pieces as I stared at my mate being intimate with another woman.

Tears formed in my eyes. The woman was the first to notice me. She stopped moaning and tapped Ares on the shoulder, signaling that I was there. He halted and turned to look at me.

His eyes widened slightly as he saw me. He slowly looked me up and down, assessing my body before pulling himself away from the woman. He put on his clothes and walked closer to me, his hands slipping into his pockets as he stood in a ravishing display in front of me.

He arched an eyebrow and casually signaled for the woman to leave, showing no hint of shame or remorse for what I had just seen.

"Blaire," he scoffed, his eyes slowly running over me again like he was judging every part of me. "I expected something more from a mate, but you're just not my type."

My heart shattered as I stood frozen on the spot, tears burning in my eyes, ready to spill down my cheeks. But the worst part wasn't even his words. It was how calm he looked, like hurting me meant absolutely nothing to him.

I wanted to tell him he wasn't my type either, but the pain lodged deep in my throat.

"I'm sorry," I muttered weakly and turned to leave, but his voice stopped me before I could take another step.

I slowly turned around to meet his cold stare.

"I hope I don't see you again, and I hope you don't ever interrupt me," he said.

I walked away and made my way back to my brothers. I was shocked to see there was a commotion that had led to a massive argument. All the jeering was directed at my siblings, and it was almost leading to a fight.

I walked in slowly and took a seat in a nearby chair. I would've at least done something, but I couldn't. I was too broken to even speak.

The rejection from my mate made my heart ache, and I couldn't get the thought out of my mind that it was all my fault. I did everything wrong. Why did I even go further to check who was moaning? Maybe if I didn't, I wouldn't have caught him cheating.

I knew I wasn't up to his taste after all. I wasn't that hot for a lady. Any man would want a woman who had all the features. A nice body and perfectly curled hair. But I was just average in everything. Maybe I didn't meet up to his expectations, and that's why he decided to cheat.

The noise suddenly halted as Ares walked in. Every eye was fixed on him, jaws dropping because he carried the aura of royalty. A disgusting frown rested on his face.

He made his way to the middle of the table and gave my brothers a stern stare before grabbing a glass cup from the table and filling it with a drink. After taking a sip, he looked up at everyone who was eager to know who he was and why he had suddenly decided to join them.

Ares dropped the glass on the table. "I'm Ares Whitehood, and I'm glad you all are getting warmed up for the event."

Noah didn't say a word, and I could sense the fear coming from him.

Ares turned my way and scoffed before facing Noah and the rest of the men. He lifted his glass cup with a smile.

"Cheers to the Whitehood Pack."

The men joined him, and they all drank from their glasses at once.

"What was the commotion all about?" Ares asked, resting his hands on the table.

One of the guys sitting next to Jake narrated everything to him. Upon hearing it, a weird smirk escaped Ares's lips as he shoved a hand into his hair, pulling back the strand obstructing his view.

"Yes, the Nightmoon are right." Ares arched an eyebrow. "We all know they're the toughest, and they indeed have the war book. So if you think you have the chance to beat them this year..." He stood up, his eyes glued to Noah's in a challenging gaze. "I need five men strong enough to beat them at their own game."

I scoffed at the irritation in his pride, my heart clenching painfully in my chest.
