Our days went on like this. Time passed.

Daire hunted and built Cedar’s room. Cedar and I practiced everything Daire taught us and I started to tend the house.

“Lucrezia get up.” I rubbed sleep from my eyes. Daire was holding his hand out to me. I gladly took it. He lifted me to my feet. He opened the door and we walked together. A beautiful horse was connected to a small carriage. I had never seen both before. The horse was black with a white stripe down their back. The carriage was black metal. I spun around smiling. Daire’s eyebrow wiggled. I laughed.

“What do you think, love? Shall we go to the city today?” He pulled me into him, his huge body enveloped mine. I looked up at him and we shared an intimate kiss. His mouth tasted like soft cinnamon.

“Can we take a quick ride before we go?” He kissed me again.

“Of course, love.” He held his hand out for me.

“My lady.” He said as I stepped on the carriage. I giggled. He ran around the carriage. His big warm body settled in beside me. The carriage moved slowly. I watched as he steered the carriage with precision. I was watching him. His jaw tightened then he looked over at me. He smiled

“The other night when you felt that jolt. I want you to know that wasn’t me or my telepathy. I felt it as well. I think you are my Soul-Tie. Some call it mates. Others refer to it as destined or true love. That jolt you felt was the bond connecting. It’s weird because humans normally don’t have mates and they definitely don’t have mates that aren’t human. I need to do some research. I am going to go to the library. While I'm there you can shop. Buy some new clothes, things we need in the house, and whatever else we can carry on the carriage.”  I sat with the information. Soul-Tie. It was a foreign concept, but it did feel right. I had never felt this way before with anyone. He was safe. He meant everything he said.

“I want to know everything. I want to know what a Soul-Tie is.” I leaned into him and snaked my arms around his chest. I buried my face into his arm. Warm cinnamon flooded my nostrils. I revealed it every second.

Cedar and I walked around Grimsfell. It was a beautiful city. It had cobblestone streets. Soft glowing lights twinkled along every building. All of the buildings were a wash of soft colors that complimented the winter landscape around us. Every shop we entered was softly lit with candles. The shops had a variety of clothing.

I had never chosen clothes for myself before. I had always worn my mother’s hand-me-downs. Even the dress I currently had on belonged to her. I entered a small pink shop with fluffy woven clothes in the display window. A plump woman stood behind the counter. I realized she was human right away. I smiled at her and she smiled back.

“Welcome to Bree’s Crochet. Let me know if you need anything.” I nodded my head in acknowledgement. She had all kinds of things from clothes to blankets. I browsed not really knowing what I should buy. Cedar ran over with a stuffed Wyvern toy. I smiled.

“Can I get this Luc.” He shoved the thing in my face. I told him he could but he was supposed to be looking for clothes from himself. He made a face and then went off on the task. I shook my head. He was becoming more confident by the day and that made my heart ache. He was finally getting to be a child.

I chose a few pieces of clothing, a beautiful tightly crocheted dress with little white flowers on it, a big warm sweater, and a two piece set with a flowy shirt and pants. Cedar found a single shirt. We took everything up to the counter. The nice woman started to ring everything up.

“It’s nice to see a familiar here.” She said still casually ringing the clothes up.

“Same.” I didn’t feel like she was being unfriendly. So, I gave another smile.

“That will be 6.50.” I looked down to count the money. “Are you a donor for a vampire here in the city?” The question caught me off guard. I stopped counting and looked up. Her smile didn’t falter but I felt unnerved. I shook my head and handed her the money. She gave me my change. I rushed out of the shop. To be honest I didn’t know the answer to the question. I had given Daire blood but did that make me his donor? I was unsure if a donor was only for blood or something more. I knew Daire and I were something more. I pondered the question as we shopped. He had only drank my blood the one time. How many times did vampires need blood? Were these reasonable questions or were they lewd?

“Luc, I’m hungry.” Cedar tugged on the skirt of my dress. I looked down at his cute face.

“Okay, let’s go find something.” We wondered until we found an adorable coffee shop. We could sit outside and that was just fine with me.  We ordered fun cakes and pretty drinks. Cedar was chatting about his archery when suddenly he went completely quiet. I looked up from the drink I was swirling in the cup. He was staring through me.

I looked behind me and there stood Cadogen.

My heart started to race. Had he followed us. Why was he here? I stood up quickly.

“Cedar, You stay here and wait for Daire okay.” He didn’t answer me but he did shake his head.

Slowly I made my way up to Cadogen. He patiently waited for me.

Before I could speak he put his hand up.

“I’m sorry for the way Esmeray treated you. She is a conduit and sometimes she is jumped by energy and spirits. I understand how scary that must have been. I know the answers you and Daire seek. The gala was pushed back. So, If you truly want to know I could tell you for a bargain of course.” His blue eyes were tinged in red. He hadn’t fed recently. How…? He had followed me. How long has he known where I was? He smiled a knowing smile.

I gulped.

The sun's rays felt good on my skin. I breathed the fresh air in. The grass felt good underneath my tired body. My muscles were aching. I turned onto my side. The room was almost completely finished. I sighed. I couldn’t wait until it was done. My brother would have a place to call his own. I rolled back onto my back.“Luc, Look.” I propped myself up onto my elbow. Cedar was standing bow in hand. He looked so confident with the bow stretched and his chin up. He let an arrow loose. It hit the target. He breathed in, nocked another arrow and let it loose. It also found the target.Oh My God! I jumped up and ran to him. I scooped him up into my arms. He was no longer that pitiful kid in the shack. His body had substance. My heart leaped out of my chest. I was so proud of him. I took his face in between my two hands and I kissed his fo

The man standing in front of me was frail. His height made him stoop. The moonlight captured his sunken eyes just right. He held a tome so thick I feared he would fall over. Despite its size it was a beautiful book. The outside was shiny black. Jewels dotted the front. The back was imbued with bright gold filigree. The man stood on an altar made of the same stuff. It was shiny black. It almost looked like water. I wanted so badly to reach out and touch it but I stopped myself. Something about this felt like a test. I don’t know why I got that impression but I dug my toes into the earth and clasped my hands behind my back.A slow rhythmic melody started up. The man on the altar started to chant softly. I couldn’t make out the words. I looked around the meadow. The moonlight did a glorious job of illuminating it perfectly. Wolfsbane dotted the meadow. The music became louder. I turned to se

“Okay Dove, the first thing you need to come to terms with is that you're small. So, your strongest weapon is your head.” Daire pressed two fingers into my forehead.“If you get into a situation where you can’t fight your way out, you need to finesse your way out.” Daire’s eyebrows rose high.“ The first step to finesse is to know your opponent and If you don’t know them. Then learn them.” He took a step in and pushed my left shoulder lightly. I stumbled back, almost landing on my butt.“Good you didn’t lose your balance. Helping me build the room has been useful with your back and core muscles.” This time he stepped into my space. As I took a step back he took one forward not letting up. I started to panic slightly. Before I knew it

I stood in the sunrise feeding the chickens. I have named every single one. Chiky, Elma, Vainy, Leerah, and HENderson. I smiled happily with my pun. There was no sign of the fight that happened last night. Daire got up before me. I haven’t seen him all morning. We were low on meat. I collected the eggs trying to dodge HENderson. He got me good on shin. I ran out, closing the gate behind me. Mean rooster. I sat the eggs on the porch. The morning smelled like the forest around the property. I smiled at the thought of a lifetime here. It was something I had never dreamed of. The carriage came into view strolling lazily up the road. Daire sat in the front. His stern demeanor would have made others believe him to be unkind. The truth was anything but. He was a big man but a kind one. His huge hands maneuvered the ropes with confidence. For a moment those hands were on my throat massaging the vein. Trailing my body until they landed on my hips g

Lucrezia! Lucrezia! My mother’s voice rang into my ears. I came around the corner terrified.“Yes? Mommy.” The booze was wafting out of her pores.“Come here you dumb child, this is all your fault.” Her hand lashed out and landed on my shoulder. “All of this is your fault.” Another blow landed on my back this time.“I wouldn’t have to do any of this if it wasn’t for YOU!” This time her fist connected with my side. I let out a squeak. Big fat tears started to run down my cheeks.“You want to cry, I'm going to give you something to cry about. I’m going to show you what I have to do to feed you.” All the pain was unbearable.

I shook my head. He silently watched as I fought with myself mentally.“ I don’t want to go back to your house. That woman isn’t safe. She…It doesn’t matter. I won’t go back.” He smiled. I couldn’t tell if he was angry. “Okay, then kiss me and I’ll give you the information.” My mouth dropped open. His eyebrows raised. Waiting for my answer. He stepped closer, invading my space. I shook my head. His hand snaked around the back of my neck holding me in place. My breath hitched. Our lips touched gently. The click I had felt with Daire happened. Except this time it was softer like someone pushed a button but it popped back up. I pulled away, not able to catch my breath. What was that? I searched his face for an answer.“Hey what’s going on over here?” Daire’

Slowly I made my way to what was going to be my room for a while. It took me by surprise how beautiful everything was. To my surprise It truly didn’t take long. It had only been about fifteen minutes when we pulled up to a grandiose estate. There were dark ebony luminaries glowing soft orange on either side of the onyx staircase. There were two men on either side of the stairs and a man currently walking down them.
