LOGINWe were all sitting in front of the fireplace watching the embers crackle. The big man reached for me and pulled me into his lap. I let him warm me.
“Well, I guess since we are going to be family I should know your names. I’m Daire Krvna ” One of his hands started to rub my arm gently. Cedar looked at me. He was watching everything very closely.
“This is Cedar and I’m Lucrezia.” I said, turning my face to look at Daire’s big brown eyes.
“It’s nice to meet you Cedar.” Daire put out a big hand. Cedar looked at it wearily. “It’s okay you don’t have to trust me yet. Trust is earned. I get that. You're a good man looking out for your sister.” Daire spoke gently to Cedar. I smiled and Cedars' shoulders relaxed a bit. I wondered if telepathy could suddenly work on him. Cedar yawned, his eyes were starting to droop. Daire lounged back. “So tired boy do you want to sleep out here with your sister and Me or do you want the big bed all to yourself?” Cedar’s tired face lit up.
“Go put the boy in bed.” Daire whispered into my ear. I smiled. He was being so kind to us it lifted my heart. That was when I finally felt it. It felt like something clicked into place. My breath caught and I stood up slightly panicked. I shook myself mentally.
I picked Cedar up and hauled him into Daire’s bed. I rocked him and sang to him. He was sleeping before the first verse was finished. I gently set him in the bed and went back to Daire who was eating some of the jerky he made. He opened his arms and I sat in his lap. Calm washed over me and I welcomed it. I took a deep breath….
“I know love. I felt it too. I will explain everything later. Trust me.” Daire’s warm breath tingled my ear. We laid on the floor in front of the fireplace. He was warm and for the first time in so long I felt safe. He played with my hair. And I ran my hands over his huge soft body. Neither one of us tried anything more, just quiet contentment.
I woke up under a huge fur. The house was quiet. Too quiet. I jumped up, cold fear gripping my heart. I slammed into the door to the room. Cedar wasn’t in the bed. My blood pumped wildly as I ran to the front door. “Cedar, Cedar!” My muscles constricted as I dove at the front door. I wretched it open. It slammed against the back wall. I didn’t care, I was so stupid. How could I have been so naive? Breathing heavy My feet hit the front porch. I looked around wildly for a clue to where they could have gone. That was when I was finally seeing on the hill above the hut Daire was teaching Cedar how to use a bow. His huge body was bent clearly explaining how Cedar was standing. I was so relieved my stomach turned and my mouth watered and I lost my dinner on the ground. I looked up again and found Daire’s big brown eyes.
His brows pulled together and he bent down, spoke to Cedar then headed my way. I sat on the porch trying to catch my breath and right my stomach. His big hand cupped my chin and made me look at him. He seemed worried. He touched my cheek and wiped my tears away. I hadn’t even realized I was crying. He bent down and kissed both of my eyes.
“Did I scare you? Should I have woken you? You just looked so peaceful. I’m sorry I should have asked you.” He sat beside me pulling me into a half hug.
“I was scared. I didn’t know where my brother was.” I looked up at him. guilt now coloring my expression. He licked his lips and calmed flooded into me again.
“Don’t feel guilty. Next time I’ll wake you. I’m sorry Lucrezia, I'll do better next time.” He got up and pulled me into a hug. He kissed me gently. Not searching for anything, just a kiss for comfort. He grasped my hand in his huge one and pulled me up the hill. The tree they were using for target practice was pristine. I guess, Cedar hadn’t hit the target once. I giggled. Daire turned me to look at the hut. He pointed to the side of the house the table sat at. “I was thinking his room could go there. It will be far enough away that we will have privacy and so will he.” I smiled. He was really going to build Cedar a room.
This is what I had always wanted. They practiced for a little while longer and then he showed me the rest of his property. He had chickens and a small garden although right now it was too cold for anything to grow. His land wasn’t huge but he lived well enough. Better than I had ever lived a day in my life. He took me to a different hut on the property. It was a room with running water and a private place to take care of your business.
“One day I’ll have enough to build a house but for now I hope this will work.” He splashed water onto my face. I laughed and called Cedar over. He walked with a confidence I had never seen before. He looked older. Daire splashed Cedar with water. We laughed together until each one of us was soaked.
"Alright boy how about we go try to hit that target? What do you think Lucrezia do you think you can hit that target girl?" I smiled an shook my head. I would try. Why not?
The sun's rays felt good on my skin. I breathed the fresh air in. The grass felt good underneath my tired body. My muscles were aching. I turned onto my side. The room was almost completely finished. I sighed. I couldn’t wait until it was done. My brother would have a place to call his own. I rolled back onto my back.“Luc, Look.” I propped myself up onto my elbow. Cedar was standing bow in hand. He looked so confident with the bow stretched and his chin up. He let an arrow loose. It hit the target. He breathed in, nocked another arrow and let it loose. It also found the target.Oh My God! I jumped up and ran to him. I scooped him up into my arms. He was no longer that pitiful kid in the shack. His body had substance. My heart leaped out of my chest. I was so proud of him. I took his face in between my two hands and I kissed his fo
The man standing in front of me was frail. His height made him stoop. The moonlight captured his sunken eyes just right. He held a tome so thick I feared he would fall over. Despite its size it was a beautiful book. The outside was shiny black. Jewels dotted the front. The back was imbued with bright gold filigree. The man stood on an altar made of the same stuff. It was shiny black. It almost looked like water. I wanted so badly to reach out and touch it but I stopped myself. Something about this felt like a test. I don’t know why I got that impression but I dug my toes into the earth and clasped my hands behind my back.A slow rhythmic melody started up. The man on the altar started to chant softly. I couldn’t make out the words. I looked around the meadow. The moonlight did a glorious job of illuminating it perfectly. Wolfsbane dotted the meadow. The music became louder. I turned to se
“Okay Dove, the first thing you need to come to terms with is that you're small. So, your strongest weapon is your head.” Daire pressed two fingers into my forehead.“If you get into a situation where you can’t fight your way out, you need to finesse your way out.” Daire’s eyebrows rose high.“ The first step to finesse is to know your opponent and If you don’t know them. Then learn them.” He took a step in and pushed my left shoulder lightly. I stumbled back, almost landing on my butt.“Good you didn’t lose your balance. Helping me build the room has been useful with your back and core muscles.” This time he stepped into my space. As I took a step back he took one forward not letting up. I started to panic slightly. Before I knew it
I stood in the sunrise feeding the chickens. I have named every single one. Chiky, Elma, Vainy, Leerah, and HENderson. I smiled happily with my pun. There was no sign of the fight that happened last night. Daire got up before me. I haven’t seen him all morning. We were low on meat. I collected the eggs trying to dodge HENderson. He got me good on shin. I ran out, closing the gate behind me. Mean rooster. I sat the eggs on the porch. The morning smelled like the forest around the property. I smiled at the thought of a lifetime here. It was something I had never dreamed of. The carriage came into view strolling lazily up the road. Daire sat in the front. His stern demeanor would have made others believe him to be unkind. The truth was anything but. He was a big man but a kind one. His huge hands maneuvered the ropes with confidence. For a moment those hands were on my throat massaging the vein. Trailing my body until they landed on my hips g
Lucrezia! Lucrezia! My mother’s voice rang into my ears. I came around the corner terrified.“Yes? Mommy.” The booze was wafting out of her pores.“Come here you dumb child, this is all your fault.” Her hand lashed out and landed on my shoulder. “All of this is your fault.” Another blow landed on my back this time.“I wouldn’t have to do any of this if it wasn’t for YOU!” This time her fist connected with my side. I let out a squeak. Big fat tears started to run down my cheeks.“You want to cry, I'm going to give you something to cry about. I’m going to show you what I have to do to feed you.” All the pain was unbearable.
I shook my head. He silently watched as I fought with myself mentally.“ I don’t want to go back to your house. That woman isn’t safe. She…It doesn’t matter. I won’t go back.” He smiled. I couldn’t tell if he was angry. “Okay, then kiss me and I’ll give you the information.” My mouth dropped open. His eyebrows raised. Waiting for my answer. He stepped closer, invading my space. I shook my head. His hand snaked around the back of my neck holding me in place. My breath hitched. Our lips touched gently. The click I had felt with Daire happened. Except this time it was softer like someone pushed a button but it popped back up. I pulled away, not able to catch my breath. What was that? I searched his face for an answer.“Hey what’s going on over here?” Daire’
I was so stupid. I had really thought that life could change, but it never does. I ran aimlessly not knowing where I was. The well manicured grass turned more wild as I hit a tree line. Clearly no longer Cadogen’s property. I ran until my lungs felt like they would burn out of my chest. I should hav
“Hello, I saw you yesterday walking with Miles” I whirled around. The woman from the kitchen yesterday was standing in the doorway to the kitchen. She was smiling but I was starting to feel uneasy. Her smile didn’t reach her eyes. It felt plastere
Slowly I made my way to what was going to be my room for a while. It took me by surprise how beautiful everything was. Although I didn’t give myself time to dwell, I fell into the lush bed yanking the fluffy pillow under my head. I had never felt something so luxurious. The closest I had ever gotte
