My masked lover looked down at me contentedly. Possessively.

“That was, by far, the last thing I expected to experience tonight,” he told me.

I chuckled. “I certainly didn’t either.”

He went to remove his mask but my hand shot up to stop him. For some reason it felt like it would ruin it.

“Don’t,” I echoed my earlier request, offering a reassuring smile. “It’s better this way.”

He took my hand with a doubtful sigh. Kissing my palm before holding it to his chest.

“Next you’re going to deny me your name,” he said with a grin.

My smile widened. “You’re smart,” I replied.

He leaned in closer, planting a hand against the wall above my head as he brushed his knuckles along my cheek.

“I’ll let you keep your anonymity… for now,” he told me. “Just know that I’ll have your name before we meet again.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “What makes you think we’ll meet again? I don’t belong with this crowd, remember?”

The smug grin that graced his face almost had me weak in the knees again. “Let’s just say I’m good at making things happen,” he stated.

He began leaning in closer when the music from the ballroom next to us stopped and someone came on the mic. I pressed a hand to his chest, confidently pushing him back.

“Sounds like the speeches are about to start. No better time to sneak in unnoticed.” I held his gaze. “We should get back in there.”

“You go first,” he suggested, checking the hallway to make sure the coast was clear. “I’ll give you a head start. We can’t have you and me becoming the next juicy gossip, now, can we?”

My mouth dropped open at the reference to my conversation with Christina but before I could comment, he was ushering me out the door. As much as I wanted to ask just how long he had obviously been watching me this evening, he was also right. The last thing I wanted was to give anyone ammunition to start rumors. So, I scurried down the hallway and dipped into the ladies’ room.

I thanked whatever deity was watching over me when I found the restroom empty. I retreated to a stall to make sure there was no lingering evidence of my impulsivity. I ensured everything was tucked back into my dress and where it belonged. I realized I had lost my panties but I wasn’t about to go back to retrieve them. Once I was sure my gown was in place, I left the stall to check my hair and makeup. A little smudged and tousled but nothing I couldn’t fix. It would have been easier with my purse, but that was still with Christina.

Crap. Christina. What the hell was I going to tell her?

Hey, girl, sorry I abandoned you with these snobs. I had to go fuck some strange dude in a broom closet.

My face flushed red. You would have thought it was from shame but no. Instead of covering my face in embarrassment, I laughed at the stupid smile that wouldn’t leave my face. Besides, it wasn’t like Christina was one to judge a casual exploit.

The sound of applause came through the speakers of the bathroom and I realized they had the event mic linked to the building’s sound system. The sound of my mother’s voice had me rushing out of the bathroom. I only hoped I hadn’t taken so long I’d run right back into my intimate stranger.

Thankfully, I didn’t. Instead, I was met by a tipsy best friend rushing toward me.

“There you are,” she said. “Your mother was about to have a conniption looking for you. Get your fine ass back in there.”

I suppressed a sigh as she dragged me back to the ballroom where my mother was on stage speaking to their guests. I knew Mom would demand my attention at some point in the evening but I should have had at least until after the speeches before she was drunk enough to get sentimental.

But then again… they were serving really good champaign.

I loved my mother. But our relationship was… unconventional. It wasn’t a bad relationship. At least not for the most part. It just wasn’t what you would typically expect from a mother/daughter relationship.

Mom was seventeen when she got pregnant with me. Dad split before I was born and she was left to figure out the whole single teenage mother thing. It didn’t come easy to her. I don’t think anyone would say she raised me. I certainly wouldn’t. I was lucky enough to have my grandmother for that. At least for a few years. Until they had a falling out over my mother’s hyper fixation on finding a rich husband at the expense of her kid. After that, I pretty much raised myself.

She was never cruel. Or mean. She never put me in any real danger. But it was definitely easier for her to be the fun parent than the responsible one. It resulted in some tense situations growing up. But once I was an adult, and no longer clung to childhood expectations of being the center of her world, our relationship got easier. It made more sense. And it meant that when she told me that she finally bagged her rich dream boat, I was genuinely happy for her. Despite her faults, she was a romantic with a lot of love who deserved to be treated right.

It also meant she wouldn’t expect me to play the picture-perfect family at twenty-six years old. Or so I thought.

“And I couldn’t imagine a better anniversary present than my precious little girl moving home,” Mom expressed as she caught sight of me. “Sawyer, my love, come up here. Let me introduce you.”

I pet Arlo’s head as I sat outside the café near the house. I was waiting for Sylvia to join me. It felt a little strange knowing that her husband was sitting two tables away just watching me, but he insisted that it would be unprofessional to join us while he was working. So, I settled for getting him a coffee while he watched Arlo for me.“Sawyer…?”I turned to see Sylvia come from the direction of the parking lot. I got to my feet and greeted her with a somewhat nervous hug. I still wasn’t sure how this situation was going to go. Her relationship with her family was a lot different than mine. It was hard not to feel some guilt.“So, how are you settling in?” I asked as we settled back down at the table.“Honestly, really well,” she replied with a genuine smile, letting Arlo sniff her hand. “I’ve been wondering why we didn’t do this sooner. You’re looking great. At least since the last time I saw you.”“Yeah, I would hope,” I said with a light smile. “It seems we’re both taking to t

Christina and I laughed as we sat on the back porch and drank cocktails. It was a hot evening but I didn’t care. I wanted to admire the work that I had put in over the past two days already. I had genuinely been disappointed when the board fired me. Especially since I knew how much it meant to Sylas to have me working with him. But after a day or so, my disappointment faded. There just seemed to be so much else I could be doing.“So, where is Darla?” I asked. “What is this job you said she was working on that she couldn’t step away to come over tonight?”“Oh, yeah, well, it’s not a design job, actually,” Christina said. “She’s dancing tonight.”“Dancing? What? I thought she didn’t need to go back to stripping?” I asked.“She doesn’t,” Chris said with a shrug. “She said she missed the workout. Apparently, I do too good a job taking care of her. She’s gained five pounds and she thinks she’s letting herself go. It’s ridiculous.”“She could just join a gym,” I replied with a laugh.“But wh

Everyone started to stand from the conference table. They shook hands and murmured their goodbyes to each other, but they were smart enough to stay well clear of me. I had no intention of pretending to be content with this decision. But Sawyer seemed fine with it. So, that saved them from any repercussions from me for the time being.Out of respect, Sawyer stood by her chair. Letting the rest of the board leave before her. Just as Rick came up next to me, I saw Bella approach her. I tensed.“Try not to take it personally, Sawyer,” Bella told her. “This really only applies to any role requiring a security clearance. I would hate to think you felt like you weren’t welcome within the company in any capacity.” She reached into her bag and pulled out some paper. “In fact, I’ve taken the liberty to put together a few applications for you. They’re for some entry-level positions. You know, something more appropriate to your experience.”My hands fisted. She was trying to humiliate Sawyer even

I started to panic as we got closer to the conference room. I was terrified they would know what we’d just done in his office. Sylas and I knew what happened only showed how strong our relationship was, but I knew the people in that conference room would take the wrong way entirely. How could they not?I shook off the thoughts. How could they know? It would be fine. Everything would be fine.I took the seat at the end of the table. Feeling every eye in the room on me. Sylas moved to stand against the wall. Giving the board members enough space to feel they could converse but still making sure they knew he was there and he would have a say.Holding my head high, I looked around at each of the familiar faces. For the most part, I had only met them the one time at dinner when Sylas announced he would accept the EPA contract. Rick was there, of course. He gave me a supportive smile and nod. But he was the only one that didn’t have me worried. Especially once I saw the smug look on Bella’s

Sylas was not happy about my suggestion but I felt like it was the best solution. This would give me the opportunity to defend myself. However, I was a bit surprised at how fast Eric jumped at the idea. And how quickly he managed to arrange the meeting.“They want to catch you off guard,” Sylas said bitterly, pacing his office that evening. “They don’t want to give you time to prepare a lie.”“Well, I had no intention of lying, so that doesn’t really matter,” I told him calmly.“I know you weren’t. That’s not the point,” he stated. “You shouldn’t have to do this in the first place.”“Why not?” I asked honestly. “You gave me a job, Sylas. Anyone else would have to interview, have a background check, and go through all the other avenues to make sure they were a good candidate. I know it’s your company, but they have a vested interest in it.”“And they should trust me to protect that interest,” he replied angrily. “They have for all these years before. Why question now?”He needed to rel

As I entered the office, I found Sylas at his desk, brooding over some papers in front of him. He looked tired. Run-down even. Enough that I paused for a second. I’d never seen him like this. Not even this morning when I knew he wasn’t looking forward to dealing with the aftermath, despite his assurances. My heart ached as I realized I hadn’t really done much to take care of him through this.In fact, I’d been a little distant, considering. When he was first released, we let ourselves get distracted by the heat and passion that was always there between us. Somewhere under the surface whenever we were close. But when we came back to the real world, something seemed off. I felt like he wasn’t being honest with me about the seriousness of the situation. Then he left to work last night, which had taken me completely by surprise. It felt like he was avoiding me. That, of course, stirred my insecurities. When the hour stretched into several, I’d started to think he was rethinking our engagem
