Alora POV
The footsteps I hear behind me only serve to make me walk faster. In truth, I want to run. I have never been more humiliated in my whole life, but I wouldn’t let them see my shame. I stop in the center of a large entryway. There are staircases to my left and to my right, and I can’t remember which way I came from.
I chastise myself in my head for not paying attention, but I was so captivated by the beauty of the castle, my eyes were bouncing from one thing to another. The whole castle glitters and it distracted me.
“You want the stairs to the left,” a voice comes from behind me.
It is not the gruff voice of King Leonidas and that puts me somewhat at ease. Spinning around glitter on my gown swirls with me causing light to cascade onto the walls. My eye glance up at the grand ceiling and it looks like the night sky. Suddenly, I miss being at the cabin.
“Would you like me to show you to your room?’” Alfred asks politely.
“I hardly think that would be proper,” I whisper. “I am certain I can find my way.”
Alfred raises his eyebrows at me and crosses his arms over his chest. He doesn’t believe me. “I thought fae creatures couldn’t lie?”
I scoff loudly in his direction but the smirk on his lips forces a smile to cross on mine. “I did not lie,” I respond. “I am sure I can eventually find my room.”
“As capable as you look,” Alfred replies. “I would hate to see you wondering around the castle until the wee hours of the morning searching for your room. This place was built to be a labyrinth of sorts. Even those that have been here for decades still find themselves lost in the hallways.”
A frown tugs at the corners of my lips. I was hoping to find some sort of freedom here, but if I won’t be able to find my way around it will be just like the cabin. I might as well confine myself to my room.
Alfred seems to notice my displeasure and he offers me his arm. “I can show you all the tricks of the castle. You will know your way around in no time.”
Hesitantly, I lace my arm in his. It is a strange feeling. I had often walked in the woods arm-in-arm with the sisters but this feels different. Intimate almost. His shirt is tight around the muscles that hide beneath and I find myself blushing at his touch.
“Where would you like to go first, Princess?” He asks.
“Please, call me Alora,” I respond. “I do not know the first thing about being a princess. That title is wasted on me.”
Alfred looks disappointed but he doesn’t say so. “Where would you like to go, Alora?”
“Outside,” I practically moan. “I need some fresh air and to feel the ground beneath my feet.”
“It is snowing,” he replies. “I can take you outside but I do not recommend going barefoot.”
I push my lips out in a pout and it causes Alfred to chuckle. “Lead the way, Beta,” I respond.
“If I must call you Alora, you must call me Alfred,” he says as he leads me toward the main entrance.
He pauses in front of a large wooden door and gestures toward the guards to open it. The two guards appear to be unsure. They look at me and back to Alfred. “Have you spoken to the King?”
“The King does not care if she goes outside,” Alfred rolls his eyes.
One of the guards leans closer to Alfred. “What if she runs?”
“Where is she going to run within the castle grounds?” He asks. He is beginning to get frustrated.
The two guards seem to have a silent conversation before they finally open the doors. A gush of cold wind blows into the castle causing the guards and Alfred to shiver, but I think it feels wonderful. I lift my head and let the breeze run through my hair.
Not waiting for Alfred I step toward the door, and a loud growl erupts from behind us. Alfred tightens his arm in mine, not letting me go any further. Stiffly, he turns around and flinches when he sees the dark eyes of the Lycan King on him.
“Where are you taking her?” King Leonidas demands to know.
“Outside,” I respond before Alfred has a chance to. “I asked.”
“It is frigid out there,” King Leonidas growls. “She can go out in the morning when it is warmer.”
I want to throw a tantrum, but I keep my emotions in check. The Lycan King walks in my direction and offers me his arm. Alfred drops his arm to his side and steps away from me. I grit my teeth together in protest and refuse his arm.
Anger flashes in his eyes and he growls. “I will show you to your room.”
“Alfred has offered to show me around,” I reply. “I would prefer him show me the way.”
“And why is that?” King Leonidas almost looks amused.
“Because he is not rude,” I reply honestly.
I grab Alfred’s hand and drag him toward the stairs to the left. He tries to follow behind me, but he is tripping over his feet. As I step onto the stairs, my legs go weak and I collapse under my own wait. Alfred tries to help me to my feet but King Leonidas pushes him to the side.
“Do not touch her,” he warns.
Alfred steps away from me and King Leonidas kneels down next to me. I glare into his blackened eyes as I struggle to get back up. He scoops me into his arms and a rush of tingles spread over my skin. The runes on my arms begin to burn so brightly that they are almost blinding.
I want to wiggle out of his arms but my body has gone limp. Whatever Evanora gave me must have worn off. I am sure to keep a look of displeasure on my face until the King stops outside of what I assume in my room.
He waltzes inside with me in his arms and sits me down on the bed. My beautiful gown is wrinkled and creased from being carried and I can barely see over the skirts.
“I will help you get undressed,” he tells me.
A gasp leaves my lips. “You most certainly will not,” I snap. “Go get Sabrina.”
“Sabrina has the rest of the night off,” he replies.
“Then get Evanora,” I practically shout. “Anyone but you.”
“Funny how you do not ask for the other witch,” he smirks.
“Anila was never the mothering type,” I say through gritted teeth.
“You do remember her,” he laughs.
“I do,” I admit. “But I am sure after three years in your castle she is not the same woman I used to know.”
“She is not a prisoner,” King Leonidas tells me. “She may come and go as she pleases. Anila, as you call her, has chosen to be here.”
“And the other sisters?” I ask. “Eliane and Kaia?”
“Dead,” he says flatly.
I swallow hard and fight back the tears in my eyes. “I see,” I tell him.
He steps behind me and begins to untie the laces that hold the dress on my body. His fingers work quickly and confidently. I am sure this isn’t the only dress he has removed from a woman and for some reason a rush of jealousy rushes through my body.
As his hands slide the dress down over my shoulder, my breath hitches in my chest. “King Leonidas,” I whisper. “I do not feel comfortable.”
He removes his hands from my bodice with a frustrated sigh. “I will send up your precious witch,” he says grumpily before storming from the room.
Alora POVButterflies swarm in my stomach as I wait for Anila to come to my room. I don’t know what I will say to her. I am both angry and excited. She ignored me completely at dinner, but she is the only contact I have to my old life. Perhaps she can shed some light on the last three years. Anila doesn’t knock on my door. She steps inside, and her milky eyes scan the room until she finds me. I had once believed that she was blind, but her vision just works differently than ours. She is perfectly capable of seeing what she needs to in the world around her.Anger fills the air in the room like a thick fog. It is dense and comfortable to sit in. I do not know what I have done wrong but I must have made a terrible mistake with the Lycan King. “You should not have asked for me,” she snaps at me. “I did not as for you,” I retort. “I ask for Sabrina and Evanora. You made it perfectly clear at dinner that you no longer wanted to associate with me.” “Did you ever think that I a
Alora POVSomeone throws the curtains open in my room, and I squint against the morning light. I did manage to fall asleep, but it feels like it was only moments ago. My eyes struggle to stay open.”Good morning, Princess," Evanora chirps happily.I must say her attitude does not match her appearance. She is shrouded in dark robes, and the black on her fingertips is spreading up her hands.“Good morning," I sigh. She tips a glass with purple liquid to my lips. I don't bother to fight. Even though it is bitter, I know it will help me move. I swallow it down and wait. I start by wiggling my toes, then my feet. Soon, my whole body is free of the magical prison."How much longer do I have to drink this?" I ask, sitting up in the bed."That is a question for the traitor," Evanora tells me."Of course it is," I groan.Stretching my arms around my back, I pull loose the strings of the corset. It pulls free, and I am finally able to take a deep breath.I fling my legs over the edge of the be
Leonidas POVAs I look down into her bright blue eyes, she is practically begging for me to kiss her, and Goddess knows I want to, but she doesn't deserve to be rewarded for being a brat. She will learn to be compliant, or I will break her until there is no fight left in her.She has stepped away from me, assuming that she has won this round. But I never lose.“Are you prepared to come down for breakfast?" I ask calmly. She places her hands on her hips, and her full lips are pressed into a thin line. "I said no.""Suit yourself," I say, stepping in her direction. Her eyes are wide. She is backed into a corner and has no escape. She tries to dodge as I reach for her, but she is not fast enough. Grabbing her around the waist, I toss her over my shoulder.Alora screams in protest as I march from her room. Her tiny fists slam against my back, and a string of profanities spew from her mouth."I see the traitors did not fail to give you the vocabulary of a sailor. Not very lady like," I tea
Alora POVAlfred lays a warm cloak over my shoulders and ties it carefully around my neck. His eyes don't look into mine as he readies me for our little excursion. I get the feeling he is scared of me.While his attention is elsewhere, I take the time to look at him. He is the complete opposite of the Lycan King. He smiles a lot, and when he does, his blue eyes sparkle.Blonde hair falls messily in his own face. It is not brushed or styled. He is large and muscular, like the Lycan King, but there is a softness to his touch. He is careful where he touches me. He is always respectful. If anyone were to convince me that not all lycans are monsters, it would be him.He finishes tying my cloak and stands back to look at me. "Are you warm?""Yes," I reply. "Can we please go outside now?"Alfred smiles, and the corners of his eyes wrinkle. He rushes to the main door and flings it open. The cold air hits me in the face. It stings, but I step outside anyway. The air is fresh, and I inhale dee
Alora POVSabrina leads me to a different wing of the castle. I didn't think it was possible for it to be more elaborate, but I was wrong. Giant statues of wolves line the hallways, and it feels like their eyes are watching me as I move.We stop in front of a large wooden door. It is covered in carvings and words in a language I have only seen once before."Regina castri," I read the words, running my fingers over the wood.I stare at Sabrina with wide eyes. "How many women have stayed in this room?""Just you," Sabrina responds bitterly. "You awoke before it was finished.""Why would this room be completed for me?" I ask."That is not a question for me," Sabrina whispers. She opens the door and ushers me inside. A massive bed is sitting in the center of the room. It is the largest bed I have ever seen and a fluffy navy blue quilt is on top.Several bookshelves line the room, and they are filled with books. I place my hand over my mouth to stop from squealing with excitement. I have
Leonidas POVI open the door that connects our rooms and the scent of vanilla swirls around me. I should have known she would be here. Strolling into the room, I walk past Sabrina and into my closet."Why are you here?" I growl.Sabrina steps into the closet. My eyes roam over her naked body, but I remain unaroused. While I look at her I try to remember why I brought her into my bed to begin with. She is conventionally attractive but not anything special. There is a tiny pout on her lips and she dangles her silver cuffs from the tips of her fingers."Your Highness," she whispers seductively. "It is Friday night. I always come to you on Friday nights.""Not anymore," I grunt. Her eyes fill with fake tears. "Have I done something to displease you?""You have lost your appeal," I respond harshly. It is how I have dismissed all of the other she-wolves before her, but apparently Sabrina is here to fight for her position as my mistress. She drops the silver cuffs to the ground and sto
Alora POVThere is a heavy weight on my chest making it difficult to breathe. Panic fills my veins. This is a new symptom. Perhaps my lungs are becoming paralyzed like the rest of me. Why isn’t the potion Anila gave me wearing off?As I spiral inside my mind, a snore makes my eyes fly open. Squinting against the morning light shining into the room, I see a massive head lying on my chest. I choke back the scream building in my throat, and the arm that is wrapped around me tightens. Whoever is sleeping on my chest groans loudly and lifts their head. Leonidas yawns loudly and smiles at me. “Good morning.” I can no longer hold back the scream. It belts from my lips, and Leonidas jumps from the bed. My eyes shamelessly travel down his body, and another scream builds, but I am stunned into silence. The man is naked. There is not a scrap of clothing on him. When I come to my senses, I open my mouth to scream, but Leonidas straddles me on the bed and covers my mouth with his ha
Alora POVThe man ruffles his hair in an attempt to hide his ears, but it is too late. I have seen what he is. He turns from me and tries to leave the stables, but I chase after him. “Wait,” I beg. “I am not supposed to talk to you,” he mutters under his breath. “Why not?” I plead. “Does the Lycan King not know what you are?” “It is because of what I am that I cannot talk to you,” he whispers. He races up the hill to the castle, but I refuse to accept his departure. “Please,” I beg. He spins around so quickly that he almost knocks me over. His hand wraps around my forearm and stops me from tumbling to the ground. His grasp is firm, but he does not hurt me, and his eyes are laced with concern.“What is your name?” I ask curiously. Waiting until I am steady, he lets go and exhales an uneasy breath. “My name is Elric.” “Elric,” I repeat his name. “I am Alora.” “I know who you are,” he groans. “I need to go.”“Wait,” I call after him again. “How did you get through th
Alora POVI am lounging on a couch in one of the many Fae Castle drawing rooms, and Leonidas is rubbing my feet. It has been hours since we have heard from Ivy or Elric. The lower levels of the castle aren’t flooded, so I don’t think she has killed him, but I can’t be so sure. I have only known her for a short time, but she seems terrifying. “What is there to do around here?” Leonidas growls. “I’ve got something you can do,” I snort and wiggle my eyebrows at him. “What has happened to you?” He smiles. “You used to be different.” “Did I?” I smirk. He drops my foot off his lap and puts my other foot behind him. With skill, he spreads my legs and crawls up my body. “I am not complaining. I like horny Alora,” he says, running his hand up my leg. “I think we should move this party upstairs.” I throw my arms behind me dramatically. “But I am too tired to move.” He pins my hips to the couch and bunches my skirt around my knees. “My Queen,” he whispers against my ear. “If I
Kaia POVI rush back to our room with Anila in my arms. “Elaine,” I shout. “We have to go.” Setting Anila in her cot, I begin to toss my clothes into the nearest bag I can find. Anila is watching me intently. Sometimes the way her milky eyes follow me is unnerving. Her eyes are the only thing that alludes to her real age. I forget that despite her human age, she is older than Elaine and I combined. I turn my back on her and focus on the rest of the room. “Elaine,” I shout. “Where are you?” Still, she doesn’t reply. It isn’t like her to roam about the castle. She doesn’t like to mingle. I peek my head into the adjoining bathroom and she isn’t there either. I am beginning to feel a pit in the bottom of my stomach. Someone knocks on the door, and a Fae woman stands just outside. There is a letter in her hands, and my heart drops. I already know it is from Elaine. “You can come in,” I whisper. She steps inside, but she doesn’t look at me. Her eyes are focused on Ani
Alora POVThe only sound in the dining room is the clinking of silverware against the plates. Leonidas is tearing apart his meat with his hands, glaring at Naridah from across the table. Ivy is refusing to sit beside Elric, and he is mumbling curse words under his breath. Vesper is blissfully unaware of what is happening around him. He is just happy to have his mate by his side. Naridah begins humming a song as she chews. Leonidas tenses beside me. I could sift through her memories for hours, but there will never be enough evidence for him to trust her. “Naridah,” I gain her attention. She looks up from her plate and smiles. “Please call me Nari.” “Nari,” I continue. “I think your humming makes my mate uncomfortable.” She cuts her eyes at Leonidas and presses her lips together in a hard line. “Fine.” The room is silent once again. This is possibly the most awkward family dinner since the creation of the Two Realms. Ivy is desperate to fill the silence. “Are mates com
Alora POV“It has never been done before,” Ivy snaps at me. “Your place is here among the Fae.” I shake my head. “My place is with all the creatures. I think that is why Morgan chose me. So I would unite the Two Realms.” Ivy turns to Elric. “Will you talk some sense into them?” Elric flushes bright red and looks down at the massive table between us. I can tell he has never told Ivy “no” a day in her life, and I don’t think he is about to start now. But he doesn’t say anything. All of the lycans have gone back to the Lycan Realm, and we are waiting for Vesper to return. It feels like it is Leonidas and I against the world. Ivy and a few Fae council members are being so stubborn. They won’t listen to reason. When Elric doesn’t speak up, water begins to drip from Ivy’s fingertips. She is about two minutes from losing her temper and drowning us all. “You can’t take up residence in the Lycan Realm. We need a Queen.” “I know you do,” I say gently. “I am planning on stayi
Alora POVLeonidas pauses, looking down on me. There is an eagerness in his gaze, but also concern. My magic reaches for his feelings without my permission. It latches onto his emotions, and it is suffocating. They are intense, and tears sting my eyes. I force my magic away and reach for him. “I am not made of glass,” I assure him. “You won’t break me.” He joins me on the bed, carefully positioning himself between my legs. His fingers swipe my hair out of my eyes, and he sighs. “You look so fragile.”“I am not,” I say. Wrapping my leg around him, I force him to roll onto his back. His hands rest lightly on my hips as I straddle him. Moving my body slowly, I run my core over the length of his harden cock, and he tightens his grip. I moan in satisfaction and continue to tease us both. A growl rumbles in his chest, and he flexes his fingers on my hips. I chuckle, and he glares at me. “What is so funny?”“Do you want to be inside me?” I smile. He nods with a silly grin
Leonidas POVMy warriors scatter, and several Fae do the same. I refuse to leave Alfred alive, but I can't bring myself to leave Alora's side. I didn't realize being away from her would be so painful. I don't understand how my father could betray the mate bond. Alora is all I will ever want. Her shoulders slump over, and a stray tear leaves a track through the blood on her face. In one night, she has lost and gained so much."Let's find a place to get you cleaned up," I whisper."Aren't you going to look for Alfred?" She asks."There is no need." I pull her close. "My men have it covered.""I just want to go home," she cries as she collapses into my chest."This is your home," the Fae woman that killed Estes interrupts us.Alora straightens her shoulders and sucks in a sharp breath. "This realm has never been my home.""You are our Queen," the woman pleads. "You can't leave us without a ruler.""Ivy," Alora groans. "I don't know anything about this realm. Just let me leave.""This is
Alora POVEstes puts up a fight even though his powers are no match for mine. It is wind against wind. Gusts of powerful air move across the room, whipping angrily against my skin. I do my best to retaliate, but these powers are new to me.I am desperate to keep the rest of the party safe from our battle. My concentration is split. One hand controls the vortex surrounding Estes and me, and the other is blasting air at him.My arms are growing tired, and Estes's attacks are cutting into my flesh. I can only hope that mine are doing the same to him. Sweat is beginning to form on his brow, and he looks tired. This might be my chance to end this. But I am not paying attention, and I don't see the silver glint of the knife in his latest attack until it is too late. The blade sticks in my arm, and I scream in frustration. I can't risk pulling it at and losing the vortex. My arm hangs limply at my side, and I fear he has won.He lifts his hand to deal the final blow, but only whisps come fro
Leonidas POVThis is possibly the biggest mistake I have ever made as king. The Fae Queen is dead in my castle, the future Fae King is hiding in one of my guest rooms, the full moon has disappeared from the Fae Realm, and it is likely we won’t be able to shift. Still, I am marching into the Fae castle with my army.Lobo is at my side. There is a feral look in his eyes. It seems as if he has been waiting for this fight."What's the game plan?" He asks."Honestly," I laugh." Find Alora.""No diplomacy?" He cracks his knuckles."Not this time," I snarl. "Not after what I learned from Queen Fauna, but let’s not kill everyone in our path."A smile spreads across his lips. "But those who resist?” “Fair game,” I reply. Somehow, we have managed to make it into the forest surrounding the Fae Castle. Either they are so confident in their abilities that they do not feel the need to protect themselves, or this is a trap. I am leaning toward the latter.I peer through the trees, looking for a
Alora POVElric is chasing me down the hallways of the castle, quietly pleading for me to stop and return to my room. He is trying to tell me how Leonidas will kill him if anything happens to me, but I ignore everything coming out of his mouth. My mother did not bestow her powers to me so I could hide in a dark room of the Fae castle and let men do all the work. She gave me her powers so I could restore the natural order of things. I hate to admit it, but I might need his help. Spinning around, I look him in the eyes. “Where can I find Estes?” He looks away and shuffles his feet. “There is another party in the castle tonight. He is probably there with Ivy.” I look him up and down. There is a sneer on his lips. He cares for my aunt, but why? Then I realize how blind I am. “She is your mate.” His teeth grind together, and his jaw locks. “Yes.” “Interesting,” I mutter. Then I step closer to him, studying his features carefully.Suddenly, it feels like I am transported i
