Chapter 1

My words could have been a clap of thunder.

My father, still holding the Serpentkins' proposal letter, froze in the air.

My mother was left gaping, her tail bristling as she cried, "Have you lost your mind, Winnie?!

Ebony is born impotent and bloodthirsty! There were rumors that he almost bit through a servant's throat when he snapped! It's suicide!"

I was about to argue when my father cleared his throat. "You're right. Sirius and Lola have marked each other—what would happen to them if Winnie doesn't marry?"

A look of conflict briefly flashed in my mother's eyes, and she slowly let go of my hand.

My heart grew cold in turn.

Even though I was their biological daughter, they had always preferred Lola even though she was adopted, just because she knew how to sweet-talk and play the damsel-in-distresss.

Smirking, I said, "But on one condition. On the day I'm marrying, you will make Lola confess in public that she stole my potion."

My father was at once furious and struck the table as he bellowed, "How can you be so vile? You'll destroy your sister's reputation!"

Although my mother looked at me with disappointment too, I simply smirked. "It's like the letter says: the future head to the Serpentkins desires to marry the one who made the potion. She should learn not to be greedy—what does she want for the rest of her life? Fame or a happy marriage?"

My parents eventually gave in for Lola's sake.

I turned around and left without hesitation, only to run into Sirius stepping out of Lola's room down the hallway.

He was draped in a bathrobe with suggestive marks spread all over his chest, and the scent of Lola's rose perfume was pungent around him.

One could easily imagine what they had been doing for the past three days.

However, seeing me wrinkle my nose in disgust and starting to leave, Sirius promptly stopped me and sighed. "I know you're upset, but this is the only way I can save Lola. You know how obsessed the Serpentkins can get, but marking Lola would discourage even Ebony."

I smiled wryly. "And what about me?"

Sirius and I should've marked each other since I was twenty, but Lola would do something to delay us at every turn.

Now, I was almost twenty-five, and he had marked Lola at the very last possible moment.

As such, there were only two options waiting for me at this point: to marry a rogue or the future head of the Serpentkins.

The only dead ends before me were being matched with a wandering orc or marrying the young master of the snake tribe.

Even as Sirius blinked in guilt, he quickly grabbed my hands as he exclaimed, "It's okay, I won't let you marry some rogue! I'll mark you as my slave so you can live with me without needing to marry!

"Don't worry, it's just a formality. When you move in with me, I'll treat you the same as I do with Lola."

I laughed despite my rage—how could he be so despicable?!

Only exiled beastfolk who had committed heinous crimes would ever choose the slave mark, which was also a humiliation in itself.

They were no more than merchandise that could be sold at one's pleasure, and they would always remain inferior to other beastfolks for the rest of their lives. Even their children could only be slaves in the future.

I knocked his hand away. "Never!"

Sirius quickly hid his embarrassment by snapping at me, "What's your problem?! Don't you love me? Or is your dignity that much more important than being with me?!"

I retorted, "Really? Then why didn't you mark Lola as a slave? That would've saved her too."

Sirius bellowed before he knew it, "How could you even say that?! A slave?! A delicate maiden like her should be given all the world's affection and kindness, without an ounce of grief!"

Years of accumulated grievances left my eyes reddened.

Just because she was a delicate rabbitkin, while I was the only nine-tailed foxkin in my clan, blessed with nine lives and exuberance.

That was why our parents and even my own fiance favored her, while telling me I could endure all the grievances because of who I was.

The contempt in my eyes really stung Sirius just then, and he growled, "You had better reflect on that attitude soon. You have no other choice anyway."

After Sirius left, I headed downstairs, my mind in a daze.

That was when my parents handed me a gift from the Serpentkins—a love bracelet.

It was the same bracelet that I had failed to bid at an auction in the past, and my heart felt warm seeing it.

Perhaps marrying Ebony didn't necessarily mean my death…

Lola was obviously keen to make a scene and complain out loud without an ounce of dignity.Everyone in the event hall was at once silent, though whispers of disapproval could soon be heard. It was only then that I found out what had happened to Lola. After Sirius cut her tail and chased her out of his house, my parents also ignored her pleas for help now, after having grown utterly disappointed in her.As such, she was left wandering the streets, but she realized she was pregnant as her belly started to swell.Even if Sirius tried to tear her off himself in his rage, she clung on to his leg with a vice-like grip—the child was both her only leverage against him and the one chance she could use to turn things around.Still, Sirius's family was nothing more than a joke to everyone watching now.Even his father came running to the event hall when he heard and had to force Sirius take Lola home to save face.Still, before she left, Lola shot me a resentful glare, her face distorted

Sirius was allergic to mangos—in just three minutes, gruesome hives were emerging on his hand. But he didn't seem to notice as he kept chomping on the mangos, until he started convulsing and foaming at the mouth and collapsed. As he was being carried into an ambulance, he turned toward me and gasped, "I suffered like you did… Can you give me a second chance?"All he saw was me determined to leave without a word, holding Ebony's hand.-Nonetheless, he showed up just three days later after the doctor spent twenty-four hours trying to save his life.He was a lot more subdued and would instead 'bump into' me at places he knew I frequented.Ebony was utterly irritated and would always stick close to me, his serpentine pupils clearly conveying a threat. Then one day, I attended a corporate event with Ebony.I was briefly separated from him while he was busy with some partners and was having cake when a shadow loomed over me. I looked up to see that Sirius was suddenly in front of

However, while we were convinced Sirius would have given up, he still waited at the front gates over the next few days. When I finally had enough and went out, I saw that he had lost a pound, and his clothes were draped loosely over him. His cheeks were deathly pale, while there were dark circles under his eyes.Still, as soon as he saw me, he opened his collar to reveal that Lola's mark had been removed, smiling sycophantically as he quickly said, "See? I had the mark surgically removed, and I'm clean now! We can be together again!"Removing a mark was a risky surgery and could prove lethal, as each mark ran deep beneath a beastfolk's skin and it meant removing every inch of flesh it reached.Virtually no beastfolk would risk it.I frowned. While I was surprised that Sirius would go that far, surprise was all there was to it.However, he took my silence as forgiveness and promptly pressed his advantage by shoving two woolly objects into my hands. It took me a while to realize t

It was no exaggeration to say that Ebony married me in the wedding of the century.I also noticed that every flower in the wedding hall was fake, although that must have been arranged that way because I liked flowers but was also allergic to pollen. While I was still left surprised by how Ebony knew about my preferences, we all heard a wolf's howl from outside the building.Soon, a servant came in to inform us that a Lycan had gone amok outside in his beast form and was clawing the gate outside.I was stunned—beastfolks only ever reverted completely to their beast form due to emotional trauma. That meant that Sirius somehow wasn't traumatized by Lola's true nature, but by the fact that I was getting marked with someone else.In the past, I might have been convinced that he cared. Now? I just thought he was being pathetic—what was the point of desiring something that he didn't have, when he didn't care to cherish it when he had it?Hence, as everyone cheered, Ebony and I exchang

Sirius's eyes widened at the snake cufflinks that Ebony wore at his sleeves.Disbelief showed all over his face as he looked at Ebony's exceedingly handsome face, and he dropped the branding iron as he cried, "What are you talking about?! You're Ebony, aren't you?! You're trying to force Lola to marry you, aren't you?! Just so you know, we're marked!"He was only left all the more alarmed as he watched Ebony smile and take my hand, before finally regarding him in amusement. "I'd never once mentioned anything about marrying Lola—it was always Winnie, who had personally concocted the potion. Only fools like you would like a liar like Lola!"Sirius' heart skipped a beat—what was Ebony talking about?!The rest of the guests were in an uproar, some vocally doubting that Lola had made the winning potion. At the same time, Lola turned pale. Before she could burst into tears, I glared at my parents, who had just come downstairs. "We had a deal."My mother pursed her lips in embarrassmen

I stared at my bloodied palm and suddenly laughed out loud.Sirius's heart tightened inexplicably, and a trace of panic showed on his face. "Why are you laughing?"I shrugged, not about to tell him that I was laughing at my own stupidity—for giving myself so much grief, just so that I could retain the shallow affection of my parents and Sirius.Every time Lola played the delicate maiden, they would believe everything Lola said without question, even if I was my parents' real daughter and Sirius's childhood sweetheart. And she kept going, giving the impression that I was a wicked villainess who kept hurting my sister and taking away everything that was rightfully hers.I clenched my fists so hard that my nails dug into my palms and looked up at Sirius with reddened eyes. "No, I won't apologize—I've done nothing wrong."Sirius's eyes widened, clearly stung by my defiance."Sirius…" Lola suddenly sobbed. "My hand hurts so much…"Sirius promptly turned without hesitation and gather
