Synopsis

I'm the daughter of a poor couple who make a living selling fish at a market. We're so broke that every penny counts. However, when Sylvie Putnam throws me to the ground, leaving me on the verge of paralysis, and then beats me until my face is a bloody mess, Mom barely spares me a glance. Instead, she gently strokes Sylvie's head. "Good girl. You did the right thing after she upset you. Remember, never let anyone bully you." Dad even picks up a stick and strikes it against my spine. His words make the pain explode through my body and heart all at once. Just yesterday, Mom and Dad were keeping vigil at my bedside day and night, frantic with worry over my illness. How can something this serious happen and her parents still not show up?" "Isn't she a dance student? Their audition is in a couple of days. Chapter 1

安田翔真（やすだしょうま）はあの可愛い転校生に告白しようとしている。

彼は事前にみんなに声をかけて、私には内緒にしておくよう頼んだ。

ただ、彼は知らない。おせっかいな誰かがとっくに私に教えてくれていた。

私が翔真のことを好きで、彼と結婚したいと夢見ているなんて、誰もが知っている。

今回、翔真はその転校生に一目惚れして、本気で恋に落ちた。

私はきっと、泣いて喚いて大暴れするに違いない。

こういう男女のドロドロ劇は、誰だって大好きだ。

みんな、私がぶち切れて修羅場を起こすのを今か今かと待っていた。

ただ残念なことに、翔真の告白が無事に終わるまで、

私は姿を見せなかった。

野次馬は何重にも取り囲んでいたのに、どこか白けた空気が漂っていた。

翔真の顔にも、大して嬉しそうな様子はなかった。

彼は新しい彼女を腕に抱きながら、スマホを取り出す。

でも、電話もメッセージも一通もなかった。

翔真は少しだけ眉をひそめた。

そして、取り巻きたちに向かってこう言った。「今夜は俺のおごりだ。見てたやつ、全員な」

そのひと言に、クラスメートたちは一斉に歓声を上げた。

ずっと茂みの陰に立っていた私が、ようやく姿を現した。

目ざとい誰かが私を見つけ、すぐに叫んだ。「斉藤紗季（さいとうさき）だ、紗季が来た！」

「ほらね、紗季が我慢できるわけないと思った」

翔真はぱっと顔を上げ、私を見た瞬間、口元をほんのわずかに緩めた。

騒ぎを期待してざわつく周囲の視線を無視して、

私はまっすぐ翔真の前へと歩み寄った。

「紗季」

翔真は新しい彼女をさらに強く抱き寄せ、

私を見ながら淡々とした声で言った。「恋ってものは、無理にどうこうできるもんじゃない」

「俺たちはもう十年以上の付き合いだし、あんまりひどいことは言いたくない。昔の縁もあるし」

「これからも、お前のことは妹みたいに思ってる」

「困ったことがあったら、いつでも頼ってきていい」

そう言い終えると、彼は声のトーンをぐっと落として続けた。「みんなが見てるんだ、もう騒ぐのはやめて、帰れ」

「翔真」

私は彼の言葉を遮り、静かに一歩、前へ踏み出した。

彼はまた眉をひそめる。「紗季、言うことを聞け」

私はふっと笑い、さっき腕から外したばかりのブレスレットを彼に差し出した。

「来たのは、これを返したかっただけ」

ブレスレットを見た翔真の顔が、さっと曇った。「紗季、また何を企んでる？」

「これ、受け取って。もうあなたにまとわりつくつもりはないから」

翔真は私をじっと見据え、声をさらに冷たくした。「こんな金、大したもんじゃない」

「いらないなら、捨てていいよ」

その言葉を聞き終えるか終えないかのうちに、私はくるりと背を向け、ブレスレットを近くのゴミ箱に放り投げた。

「前のプレゼントも、ぜんぶ捨てて」

そう言い残して、私は彼を一度も振り返ることなく、その場を後にした。

翔真はその場に立ち尽くし、紗季の姿が完全に見えなくなるまで微動だにしなかった。

けれど、その顔色はやはり冴えなかった。

そばにいた友人かが慌てて空気を和ませようとした。「まあ、紗季はプライド高いからね。無理してるだけだよ」

「翔真、見ててよ。今夜中には絶対後悔して戻ってくるって」

「下手したら、俺らがいなくなった瞬間に、泣きながらゴミ箱漁ってるかもな」

それを聞いた翔真は、ふっと笑って言った。「好きにさせておけ」
