Chapter 3

Author: Clear Gilt
The pain still throbbing through my body remained a constant reminder that none of this was a nightmare.

When the doctors and nurses wheeled me to the operating room, they suddenly stopped. Someone was blocking the entrance.

"Mr. Putnam's daughter twisted her ankle on the stairs just now. They're using this operating room. You'll have to wait."

At that, the nurse beside me panicked. "How can we wait? If this patient doesn't get treated now, she won't just be paralyzed. She could die! It's just a twisted ankle. Does she even need an entire operating room?"

But no matter what the nurse said, the person standing in front of us didn't care. They stepped back into the operating room and restricted access.

I lay helplessly on the gurney, my heart completely shattered.

After everything I had learned today, I no longer wanted to be saved. With Mom and Dad's betrayal and what they had done to my body, maybe it would be better if I simply never woke up again.

Just as I was thinking that, Mom suddenly stormed out of the operating room, hurried over to me, and stared at me for a long moment.

My heart clenched. A tiny spark of hope flickered inside me. Did she recognize me at last?

Ignoring the pain coursing through my body, I desperately twisted myself around and reached out my right hand, trying to make Mom see me.

Yet, all I met was the coldness in her eyes. She covered her nose and wrinkled her brow, as if my smell of blood disgusted her.

"I don't think there's much point in saving her in this condition," she said. "The rest of you, come with me. My daughter's injured foot is more important!"

With that, she grabbed the medical staff and pulled them away without a second thought.

"Ma'am, this patient's injuries are clearly much more serious!"

"Shut up!" Mom shouted, slapping the nurse across the face. "My daughter is the Putnam heiress! How can her life be compared to some nobody's? Her 18th birthday is in a few days. I won't have her showing up with an injured foot."

My hand, still reaching out toward her, froze in midair.

The nurse dared not say another word. She lowered her head and obediently followed Mom into the operating room. Just like that, I was left alone in the hospital hallway.

At that moment, the crushing feeling of being abandoned completely swallowed me.

After what felt like an eternity, the operating room doors finally slid open again. Mom and Dad wheeled Sylvie out, fussing over her the entire time.

"Sylvie, seeing you hurt your ankle breaks our hearts…"

"Make sure you get plenty of rest when you get home, okay? I'll call the school and get you excused right away."

Sylvie nodded, and a nurse wheeled her away.

Mom remained standing there, as if something suddenly occurred to her. "Honey, did we just forget Rosie is still at home? Quick, call her!"

They frantically dialed my number over and over, but no one answered. They had smashed my phone earlier at school. Of course, they couldn't reach me.

I wanted to scream and tell them that I was right here in front of them, but my throat was dry and burning. All that came out was a broken, strangled whimper from deep in my chest.

I truly had no strength left.

"Why isn't she answering our calls? Could something have happened?"

"Come on. We need to get home and check on her right now!"

Panicked, Mom and Dad turned to leave and rushed home to find me. I could only watch them walk away before helplessly closing my eyes.

It was then that the police arrived and stopped them. They were here to investigate what happened.

"This case hasn't been resolved yet, and neither have her parents arrived. No matter how much power you think you have, you can't just walk away like this."

Dad was already growing impatient. "Fine. Then call her parents and ask how much they want. We'll pay whatever it is."

"We're in a hurry to be somewhere now. Can't we just pay them?" Mom suggested, practically stomping her feet due to the anxiety.

The officer hesitated. "But…"

A police assistant stepped forward. "We just found her father's phone number—"

Dad cut him off, snatched the phone from his hand, and dialed the number without even looking at it. "Fine! Call him already and stop wasting our time!"

The next second, Dad's phone started ringing in his pocket.

"Sylvie has always been spoiled because of us," Mom said. "We promise you we'll discipline her from now on."Even now, Mom was still making excuses for Sylvie. Somehow, that only made me more determined not to let things go.I raised an eyebrow and looked at Sylvie. "But you knew I was your sister from the very beginning, didn't you?"Sylvie's eyes darted away. "W-What are you talking about? How could I have known? Mom and Dad never told me!""Then why did you always follow me to the dance studio?" I asked. "I noticed you a long time ago. You already knew who I was back then, didn't you? You pretended not to know me because it made it easier for you to get rid of me!"Sylvie froze. She never expected that I had noticed her stalking me and even memorized her face.Mom was in sheer disbelief. "Sylvie Putnam, is your sister telling the truth?"Sylvie's face turned pale, but she still refused to admit anything. "And you believe her just because she says she's seen me? Well, I can m

Frankly, I didn't want to be the bigger person in this situation. All I could think about was how unfair everything had been for me.Dad's visage darkened, and he fell silent. Mom sat in a chair nearby, covering her face as she sobbed uncontrollably. The entire room was suffocating with silence. After a long time, Dad reached out and took my hand. "You're right, Rosie. We did this to you. Come home with us—our real home. We'll do everything we can to make it up to you. You'll never have to suffer again."I'll contact the best doctors in the world and find a way to make you better—"I pulled my hand away, forced a smile, and shook my head. "I'm not going home with you. That isn't my home. I don't have one anymore."Colors drained from their faces, leaving them deathly pale, as though my words had sucked the life right out of them.I turned to Marie. "Let's go back to the hospital. We're done here. There's no point in staying here." She nodded and slowly wheeled me out of the pol

Instead of bringing Dad back to his senses, my words only angered him more. He violently wrenched himself free from the officers and charged straight at me.In the blink of an eye, Dad was standing before me. He grabbed the bandages covering my face and tore them off. "You're still lying! You're not my daughter! I'll kill you—you hear me? Rosie is—"The moment they hit the floor, the fury on his face melted. Displacing it was an inexplicable mix of shock and regret. "R-Rosie?"Mom, standing nearby, froze as well. She blinked several times, as though she needed to make sure she was seeing my face correctly. She then shoved Dad aside and dropped to her knees before me. "Rosie, it's you… It's really you!"She gently traced the scars on my face. Tears spilled from her eyes and fell onto me. "My daughter… My baby… How did you end up like this?"Sobbing, she helped me up from the floor and settled me back into my wheelchair.Honestly, by the time Mom and Dad recognized me, I was alrea

"My daughter is missing! Why haven't you sent anyone to find her?""Why do you mean she's my daughter? You think I can't recognize my own daughter? You cops have no conscience at all!"When I entered the station, I saw Mom screaming at the top of her lungs, her words slurred from how worked up she was.The officer looked utterly helpless and had to raise his voice just to be heard. "It's not that we didn't want to help you find your daughter. But she is your daughter! You just refuse to believe it!"As he spoke, he noticed I had arrived and pointed in my direction. "There. She's here. Take a good look for yourselves and tell me if she's your daughter!"The moment he finished, Mom and Dad turned toward me. My face was still wrapped in bandages, so they couldn't make out my features."Bullshit! How dare you still try to fool us! We've told you a million times—that is not our daughter! She never would've been anywhere near that school!"Just as I expected, they still refused to bel

Mom and Dad locked eyes, shocked.I held my breath, too, anticipating their reactions.Mom glanced over at me, snatched Dad's phone away, and hung up. Her voice was dripping with anger. "What kind of police work is this? How did you end up with our number? She's not our daughter! Stop wasting our time!"With that, she murdered the last bit of hope I had left. The truth was right before them, yet they refused to believe that the female student they had beaten into a cripple was their daughter.Even the police were stunned. "That can't be right. The info came directly from the police database. There's no way it's wrong. Why don't you take another careful look and—"Dad stood his ground. "I only have two daughters. One is recovering from a twisted ankle, while the other is safe and sound at home!"He paused, then narrowed his eyes. "Wait. Is this some kind of scam? She's an orphan who has her eyes on our money, and now you're trying to force her on us. Well, forget it! Not on my w
