EMMELINE

Something felt wrong before I even opened my eyes. It was like the air had weight. Like I was being watched. My whole body tensed, and I knew—without knowing why—that the world had shifted while I slept.

I woke to a strange tension in the air, like something pressing down on the estate. Distant howls echoed through the early morning mist, unsettling and unfamiliar.

I pushed off the sheets, barefoot as I crossed to the balcony. And that’s when I saw them.

Wolves. At least forty. Silent. Still as statues at the edge of the forest, their glowing eyes locked on the estate. Not rogues. No, rogues don’t hold that kind of posture. They were Rivenborn.

My heart picked up speed. I grabbed the balcony rail like it would hold me together.

But between them and the estate gates, standing like a goddamn wall, were armed council soldiers. Dozens of them. Shields up. Their weapons were drawn. Ready for war.

And right in front of them, like he’d just stepped out of a nightmare to fa

EMMELINE¤▪¤▪︎¤▪︎¤▪︎¤▪︎¤The pain had dulled just enough for me to breathe. Barely. Like someone turned down the volume on it but left the ache humming in the background..Thanks to the herbs Callis had given me. I opened my eyes slowly, blinking against the soft flicker of candlelight.Darius was sitting by the window, shoulders tense, eyes fixed on the dark beyond the glass… staring out the window like he was waiting for something—or someone. The broken moon pendant lay on the nightstand, catching the glow of the flames."They're coming," I whispered, my throat dry and cracked. He didn’t hesitate. His head snapped toward me, eyes sharp with worry. "I know."I gripped the sheets, my knuckles going white. "I can feel him. He's coming."The ache in my belly twisted sharp, like a knife trying to tear me apart from the inside out. I gritted my teeth, willing the pain to back off even more. My breath hitched.Darius was at my side in seconds, brushing sweaty hair from my forehead. "Callis

EMMELINE■□■□■□■□The pain hit me like I’d been punched from the inside. Sharp. Sudden. Wrong. My whole body jerked like it was trying to tear itself apart. It wasn’t just cramps or some dull ache either. This was sharp. Searing. Like something inside me had claws. One second I was sitting on the edge of the bed trying to breathe through the tightness in my back, and the next—"Shit!" I screamed, my legs buckling. I dropped to my knees, hands gripping the sheets as something inside me twisted like it wanted to tear me apart. The door slammed open. Darius was there in two strides, scooping me up. "Em—what is it? What’s happening?""I don’t know—I don’t—fuck, it hurts!"I could barely breathe, let alone talk. I tried to answer, but all that came out was a choked sob."Callis!" he roared as he carried me to the bed. "Callis, now!"He laid me down gently on the mattress, panic flashing in his eyes even as he tried to stay calm. "Callis!"His voice boomed down the hall, and a second later,

DARIUS□■□■□■I was dead asleep, dreaming when the knock came. No, not a knock. A goddamn pounding. Fists slamming against my door like someone meant to break it off its hinges.I sat up, heart racing, still half stuck in whatever dream I’d been having—something warm. Emmeline. Her laugh, I think. Then the pounding again. Gone was the softness.I rolled out of bed, heart already hammering, yanked a shirt over my head, and opened the damn door.Dawson was standing there, chest heaving like he’d run through fire. His eyes—wide, wild. That wasn’t normal.“They’re here,” he said.My stomach dropped. “Who?”He didn’t even blink. “Council guards. Armed. Dozens of them."I didn’t ask another fucking thing. I moved.Boots. Jacket. Gun. I didn’t even stop to tie the laces before I was halfway up the damn stairs to the rooftop. My mind was already racing. Why now? Why like this?By the time I got to the rooftop, the sun hadn’t even broken the horizon. But the whole goddamn estate was glowing

EMMELINE□■□■□■I walked to the edge of the forest again, alone this time. Darius had made sure of that. No guards, no shadows watching from behind the trees. Just me. And her. Or, I hoped, her.The air was thick. Like the forest knew something I didn’t. Like it was holding its breath. Every step I took made the silence louder. I stopped when the trees started to crowd in, their roots twisting under my boots. I waited. Then she came. The small dark wolf. Same sharp eyes, same stillness. Her fur rippled in the wind that wasn’t there.I didn’t speak at first. Didn’t move either. Then I said, quietly, "I know what I carry now."She stared at me. Still and unblinking. And then, like a thread snapping, she shifted. One blink and there she was–in her human form. Young. But calm in a way that made me feel like I was the child here, not her."I am Nara," she said. Her voice was soft but it carried like wind through dry leaves. "And you carry what was lost."I frowned. "What does that mean? Wh

DARIUS□■□■□The door opened, and in walked a man who looked like time had tried to kill him and failed miserably. They brought him in just past noon. I was already waiting in the east hall when Sylas arrived with him—a tall, wiry old man, hunched slightly, leaning heavily on a crooked cane. His face looked like stone worn by wind and time. Scar across his left brow, skin dark and weathered like old leather.I stood, heart already racing. It wasn’t fear. Not quite. But something close. Like the feeling before a storm hits.Eron Routhan. That was the name Sylas had given me. Said he was older than dirt but sharper than most men half his age. Said he might know the truth about Emmeline’s mother—and if we were lucky, something about the Rivenborn blood. His limp was pronounced, but it didn’t make him look weak. No, there was something in his eyes. Sharp. Watchful. He didn’t bow. Didn’t even blink when he looked me straight in the eye.“I’m not here to kiss the crown,” he said. “I’m here
