Samantha wore her favorite Pink Princess dress that her mother bought for her; every time she wore this dress, she hoped that her father and his new wife would accept her and maybe let her play with her half-sister Jane and stepbrother James.

She only saw them once when her father came to talk with her grandfather.

Samatha and her mother Alison moved into her grandfather's cottage after her father left her mother for his childhood love when she was three years old.

Samantha swirled, happy, then ran towards her mother's room, "Come on, Mommy, Daddy will be here soon; you have to come and kiss me goodbye before I go."

Samantha stopped and had a frown on her little face when she saw her mother lying in bed, not moving.

" Mommy!" The little girl shouted a little louder, hoping her mother would wake up but noticed the older woman lay still with her eyes closed. Samantha hopped onto the bed and crawled on top of her mother.

"Mommy?" She asked in a small voice taking her mother's face in her tiny hands. "Mommy, please wake up!" She cried out tears threatening to pour out.

"I'm going to call Grandpa; he will know what to do," She told her mother before running out; she ran as fast as her little legs could carry her to her grandfather's mansion.

"Grandpa! Grandpa, where are you?" She shouts out as soon as she is inside the house.

Patrick Black still looks fit in his three-piece suit, and his hair is covered in grey, but that's the only sign to show that he is aging; he is considered ruthless in the business world, but as soon as he saw little Samantha with a worried face his cold heart melt and filled with love.

He smiled, holding his arms out to his beautiful granddaughter, who he loved more every passing day since he decided to let her and her mother live with him after his good-for-nothing son left them without any care in the world. Alison didn't want to live in the mansion, and she suggested that they live in the small cottage that no one lives in.

"What's wrong, sweetheart?" He asked, concerned.

"Mommy won't wake up," The little girl told him with a slight frown. Patrick became worried and asked Claire to take Samantha and call the doctor.

Doctor Voigt soon arrived when Patrick took him to Alison's cottage.

"I'm sorry for your loss Mr. Black," The old man heard the doctor say as soon as he came out of Alison's room.

"It looks like she had a heart attack during the night," The doctor informed Patrick with a sad smile.

Patrick thanked the doctor and let the paramedics take Alison away before returning to the house, feeling sad about his daughter in law death.

"Grandpa, are mommy alright?" Samantha asked, interrupting his thoughts.

He looks down and caresses her cheeks, "Grandpa has to tell you something, but first, let's get some ice cream."

"Are you feeling sad?" Samantha asked her grandfather, taking his hands, and Patrick gave them a slight squeeze.

Patrick scooped ice cream into two bowls and placed them on the counter; then, he picked Samantha up, giving her a tight hug because he knew that this news would break her.

A year ago, he found out that his son left his wife and daughter without any money; he left them on the streets after telling Alison to meet him at the mall.

One of his employees found Alison with his granddaughter sleeping in an alley; when he saw her, he immediately called Patrick about what he saw. When he learned about his son's affair, he was mad and wanted to kill his son for ruining the family's name and reputation. God knows why he left Alison for a gold-digging whore.

His son Oliver put a blind eye to his responsibility, but he couldn't leave his granddaughter and daughter-in-law on the streets. Samantha brought light into his world, and he will do anything to protect the little girl.

Oliver went mad when he found out that Patrick took the pair in and wanted Patrick to kick them out; that's when Patrick chased Oliver out of his house and stripped him of the Ceo position. He knew that Oliver's old lover was only with him because of his money. He's good for nothing son can abandon his blood, but he can't.

"Samantha, sweetheart. I have to tell you something about your mommy," Patrick began talking while holding Samantha. The little girl looks up at him with a frown.

"Is it about Mommy?" She asked, taking his face in her tiny hands when she noticed tears.

"Yes, I'm afraid Mommy won't be here with us anymore. She went to Jesus."

"When is she coming back?" Samantha asked, worried that her mother had left without saying goodbye.

Patrick shook his head, "No, she won't come back. You see, during the night, she passed away, and now she's gone to heaven."

Samantha's eyes brimmed with tears, and she hugged her grandfather as if her life depended on it. "Why did she leave me? Didn't she love me?" The little girls asked through sobs.

"Your mother loved you so much, my child, but sometimes people leave this earth, and the ones that stay behind don't always understand why, but even though she's not here anymore, she will always be right here," Patrick explained, placing his hands on her heart.

A few days later, Alison's funeral was over, and Samantha cried that she didn't have a mother anymore, "Don't cry," A boy around ten told her.

Samantha looked up and saw her stepbrother James standing next to her. Samantha nods and tries to swallow the tears.

"I tell you what, every time you miss your mother, look up to the stars; she will always watch over you from heaven."

"You think she will?" Samantha asked hopefully.

"Yes, I know she's watching over you," James said before walking off.

Meanwhile, in Patrick's office, he was starting to lose his patience with his son, "Dad, I can't bring her to my home. I won't disrespect Brittney like that; you can take care of that brat. I don't want her, and that's final!"

Patrick stood up, pointing at his son, "You have a responsibility towards Samantha! She just lost her mother, and her father doesn't want her! You should have stayed with your family instead of whoring around with that snake! You give me no choice but to take your inheritance and all the shares and give it to Samantha since she's the only heir I have left!"

"You can't be serious, Father! I'm your only son, and you got another granddaughter. I won't allow you to give my inheritance to a fucking useless brat!"

"Watch your fucking mouth, boy! I won't let you talk about Samantha that way. Do you hear me? She lost her mother, and even though her father is alive, she lost him. Can you imagine what she feels like? I give you a month to decide what you want."

"Can't you keep her here with you? I promise to visit her as often as I can?" Oliver asked, not liking the idea of taking care of that child.

He married Alison when they were still in college after they found out that she got pregnant due to a one-night stand, and he left Brittney, the one girl he loved to save his family's reputation, but he never gave her attention as far as the child is considered he doesn't give a fuck. He spends his nights with Brittney, but his father somehow finds out and threatens them.

The two of them were apart for a year, and one day, he saw her as one of the candidates that came for an interview; he immediately hired her and started seeing her again. They took James, who was six years old, after Brittney's sister got arrested for murder. They tried to tell his father that the child was his, but his father was one step ahead of them and knew they were trying to deceive him by saying they had a six-year-old son.

"I know it's her sister's son! How dare you lie to me!" Patrick told them, showing the evidence.

He won't let his father give his inheritance to that brat. Jane is also his daughter, but his father won't pay attention to her; it's always Samantha. Yes, he got Brittney pregnant after she started working for him, hoping his father would approve, but no, he is a stubborn man.

"Think about what I said; either you man up and take responsibility, or you lose everything; the choice is yours," Patrick told him sternly.

"You know I can't just take her. I have to talk to Brittney first," Oliver told his father before leaving his office.
