They came for her at dawn.

Morgana heard them before she saw them. Boots on the stone, many pairs, heavy and slow. They stopped outside her door. A low voice spoke. A key turned in the lock.

She was already out of bed, with her back against the wall and her mother's comb gripped in her fist, when the door swung open.

Four guards stood in the corridor.

She knew only one of them. Brennan stood at the front with his square jaw set and his eyes fixed on a spot over her left shoulder. He did not look at her. He looked like a man who had been told to do something he did not like.Behind them, small and pale, stood Sera."Morgana," said Sera, and her voice shook. "Get dressed. Take only what you need.""What is happening?""You are being moved.""Moved where?"Nobody answered.Morgana stared at them. The grey light of dawn crept in at the

And Theron, who had never lied to either of them in two hundred and three years, and who could not quite swallow the memory of a promise he had made across a desk to a frightened girl, felt something twist behind his ribs. When I know.He pushed it down."No more lies," he said.***They did not open the jar.It sat on the black desk in its three layers of oilcloth, and they regarded it in silence, the way men regard a sleeping animal. Calen suggested a hundred reasons to leave it sealed. Sebastian suggested a hundred ways to open it. Garrett said, very quietly, that he did not think it wise to do either."There is something in the lid," he said. "A scratch. Inside the wax. A small mark.""The same sign?""Yes, Your Majesty. Scratched very fine.""So it was made by the same hands as the door." Theron frowned. "By Edda, or by whoever she answered to.""Or by whoever came to clean up after her."It was Calen who said it. He was looking at the jar with narrowed eyes."If I were to burn a

"A fever," said Garrett. "When the girl was twelve.""Her history?""That is the strange part, Majesty." Garrett hesitated. "I went through the village records myself. The parish book, the tax rolls, the church register. Maren Ellory arrived in Thornwick twenty-two years ago. She came alone, from the east, with a bundle on her back. She married Aldric within the year.""Twenty-two years ago," said Theron."Yes, Majesty. Two years before the girl was born.""And before that?""Nothing. No birth record. No family. No village of origin." Garrett's brow furrowed. "People remember her as a good woman. A strong one. But nobody knew where she came from. She never spoke of it."Silence."A woman with no past," said Calen slowly. "And a daughter whose soul was sealed before she could stand.""A Morvain survivor," Sebastian said. "In hiding. Raising the girl in a baker's cottage until the day she dies.""Possibly.""Or something else.""Possibly," said Theron. "I do not know. I will not guess u

Nobody spoke. Nobody had spoken much since sundown.Garrett crossed the room, unbuttoned his coat, and drew out a bundle wrapped in three layers of oilcloth. He laid it on the black desk. Beside it, he set down a thin leather book, a folded sheet of paper, and a small worn pouch."The jar," he said hoarsely. "The ledger. A drawing of the sign on the lintel. And this." He touched the pouch. "I will explain."Theron looked at the bundle for a long moment. He had waited a hundred and twenty years for an answer. He had thought it would feel like a trumpet. Instead it felt like a cold hand laid flat against the back of his neck."Sit," he said. "Eat something first. Then tell us everything."***It took an hour.Garrett was a good soldier, and he told it like one. Plainly, in order, without ornament. The barred door and the burned sign. The old neighbor Mera and her three men with no scent and no prints. The hearthstone and the hidden ledger. The words on the last page, which he repeated f

Aldric lifted his head."A silver piece. Every winter." Garrett held his gaze. "Your daughter says you left the room when Edda came. She says you never told her why."The man stared at him. The color had drained from his face."Maren asked me," he said hoarsely."Your wife.""On the last night. She was so thin. I held her hand, and she looked at me and said, Promise me something, Aldric." His voice shook. "She said, Every first snow, Edda will come. Give her one silver piece. Do not ask what it is for. Do not stay in the room. And never tell Morgana."Garrett went very still."Never tell your daughter?" Garrett said slowly."Never tell Morgana." Aldric's eyes were wide and glazed, and they did not seem to be seeing the cottage at all. "She said it would keep her safe. She said it was the only thing that could. And I..." His face collapsed. "I said yes. I did not ask what from. I did not ask who. She was dying, and I wanted her to stop being afraid.""You paid every year?""Every one.

It was a stone hearth, wide and low, built into the wall. A cast-iron pot hung over cold ashes. Beside it, one flagstone sat a half-inch higher than the others.Garrett crouched. He ran his gloved fingers around the edge.It lifted out as easily as a lid.In the hollow beneath lay a small bundle wrapped in oilcloth. He unwrapped it with great care. Inside were two things. The first was a book. A thin, battered ledger, bound in cracked brown leather, with the corners worn soft from years of handling. The second was a jar.It was made of brown clay, no larger than his palm. The lid was sealed with a thick plug of beeswax, and around the neck was knotted a length of green string.Garrett stared at it.Look for a clay jar sealed with wax and tied with green string. He did not touch it. He did not even breathe. He took a clean cloth from his pocket and wrapped the jar in three layers, and he laid it carefully inside his coat. It was so cold that it chilled him through the leather. Then he
