Laura Sterling

“Fire… oh God, there’s fire!”

Laura’s eyes snapped open, wide with raw terror, as the horrible smell of burning plastic and smoke flooded her lungs.

She bolted upright on the thin cot, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. There was thick black smoke curling under the cell door, stinging her eyes and choking her breath.

“Help!” she screamed, her voice hoarse and desperate as she dragged herself toward the bars with trembling arms. “Please, someone help me! There’s a fire!”

The alarms blared through the prison, a chaotic symphony of panic.

She heard footsteps thundering past...guards shouting orders, keys rattling frantically.

“Over here!” she cried again, coughing as the smoke burned her throat. “My cell....please, I can’t walk! Unlock my door!”

But the guards rushed by without stopping. One by one, they unlocked the other cells, freeing the inmates who scrambled out in a frantic wave. No one even glanced at her and no keys turned in her lock.

Laura soon realized the gravity of the situation... She was going to die in the cell and no one obviously cared enough to save her.

“Wait! Don’t leave me here!” Laura screamed, tears streaming down her face as the flames roared louder in the distance. “I’m trapped.....please!”

The smoke thickened, searing her eyes and making every breath a struggle.

Then came the explosions that made her heart skip a beat... She heard deafening booms that shook the walls and sent debris raining down. The heat grew unbearable, licking closer with every second.

She gripped on the bars so tight as if they would snap.

“They’re leaving me to die,“ she thought in pure panic, her useless legs refusing to help as she clawed at the bars. “Derick… did he do this? Is this how he finally ends me?“

“Somebody help me!” she screamed again, her voice breaking into terrified sobs. “I don’t want to die like this!”

Aaron Cole

“Hold on, Laura… just hold on.”

Aaron gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white, his powerful frame tense with rising dread.

He saw heavy black smoke billowing into the night sky ahead, painting a glow over Ashton City.

The sound of sirens filled his ears, making his insides clench.

The prison was burning. His chest twisted painfully.

“If anything happens to her because I was too late… I’ll never forgive myself.“

For years he had carried a secret crush on Laura.....quiet, intense feelings that went far beyond a brother-in-law’s concern.

She had never known he existed in that way. While she ran Sterling Group as CEO, Aaron had watched from afar, admiring her sharp mind and quiet strength.

Then she married Derick, and the pain had been too much.

Aaron knew Derick so well, he knew that he never deserved Laura. He would boast that he will take humble Laura and make her hand over all she has....as he believed a woman was supposed to how before a man.

Aaron couldn't interfere, he could only protect Laura from a distance before losing touch of her completely.

Aaron chose to leave the country, building his empire abroad and deliberately stopping any check-ins. The feelings were too dangerous, too real to ignore. He couldn’t bear seeing her with his brother.

He never dated any woman during his years away. He could not handle the pain of not holding Laura in his arms, even though he knew she never loved him back.

Now, as he sped toward the inferno, regret burned hotter than the flames ahead.

When he finally reached the prison gates, chaos greeted him.....flames leaping high, sirens wailing, firefighters and police scrambling everywhere. An officer immediately blocked his path.

“Sir, you can’t go in! It’s too dangerous....the whole block is collapsing!” The officer said, his eyes wide in terror that Aaron easily saw as pretence.

Aaron pushed the man aside with effortless strength, his voice thunderous. “Where is Laura Sterling’s cell? Tell me now!”

The cop argued back, hands raised. “We’re evacuating everyone...we don’t have time for....”

Before the argument could escalate further, a powerful explosion ripped through the night. The blast lit up the sky in a deafening roar, sending a wave of heat and debris flying outward.

Aaron froze, staring in shock and horror as massive flames engulfed the entire wing where Laura was held.

Tears stung his eyes. “No… God, no. Not like this.“

Everything inside him screamed to turn back, but a wild, desperate idea took hold. He couldn’t leave her in there.

Aaron clenched his fists, ignoring the officers shouting warnings behind him.

“I’m going in,” he muttered under his breath, his voice filled with grim determination. “Even if it kills me.”

  • Steal My Heart, Mr Cole    Chapter 47

Laura SterlingThe afternoon dragged on slower than I expected.I tried to focus on the files, but Amelia’s words kept slipping back into my thoughts like poison. I pushed them away each time, forcing myself to read line after line, making notes with a pen that felt heavier than it should. My stomach growled loudly around 1 PM. I hadn’t eaten anything since breakfast, and the stress had drained me more than I wanted to admit. The door opened without a knock.Aaron walked in carrying a tray with two covered plates and two glasses of water. He looked calm, but his eyes scanned me carefully as he set the tray on the small meeting table in the corner of my office.“You haven’t eaten,” he said simply. It wasn’t a question.I leaned back in my wheelchair, watching him. “I was working.”He pulled out a chair for himself and sat down, uncovering the plates. Grilled chicken, vegetables, rice ... simple but smelled incredible.“Eat with me,” he said. His tone left little room for argument.I

  • Steal My Heart, Mr Cole    Chapter 46

Laura SterlingAaron stayed with me for almost twenty minutes after my panic attack. He didn’t say much more about Amelia, but he kept one hand on my back, rubbing slow circles until my breathing finally evened out. When I finally sat up straight again, he crouched in front of my wheelchair, studying my face.“You sure you’re okay to stay?” he asked.I nodded, wiping the last traces of tears from my cheeks. “I didn’t come here to hide in your arms all day. I came to work.”He gave a small nod, but I could see the worry in his eyes. He stood up and adjusted his suit jacket.“I’ll be next door if you need me. Door’s open.”As soon as he left, I tried to throw myself into the files. For the next hour, I managed to review market reports and even made a few notes. It felt good — normal, almost. Like I was slowly getting pieces of myself back. Then my office door opened again.Amelia stepped inside, this time carrying a small box of pastries and wearing an innocent smile.“I brought peace

  • Steal My Heart, Mr Cole    Chapter 45

Laura SterlingI couldn’t stop shaking.Amelia’s words kept repeating in my head like a broken record. *“He will never love a broken woman like you.”*I tried to push them away. I wasn't even sure if I even wanted love and emotions, we were only in a contract marriage. But why do her words hurt me this much.I opened the file on my desk and stared at the numbers, but they blurred together. My breathing was too fast. My chest felt tight, like someone was sitting on it.“Focus, Laura. Just focus.“I picked up a pen and tried to write notes, but my hand trembled so badly the words came out crooked. The office suddenly felt too small. The walls were closing in. My legs, still heavy and useless in the wheelchair, felt even more like dead weight.“She’s wrong. She has to be wrong.“But what if she wasn’t?What if Aaron really saw me as nothing but a broken project? A responsibility? A temporary fix for his guilt? My breathing grew faster. Short, shallow gasps. My vision started to blur a

  • Steal My Heart, Mr Cole    Chapter 44

Laura SterlingI sat behind the large desk in my new office on the 28th floor, staring at the nameplate that read “Laura Cole as Strategic Advisor.” The words still felt strange, like they belonged to someone else. The office was modern and spacious, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. Aaron had made sure everything was ready .... files neatly arranged, a new laptop, even a small vase of fresh flowers on the corner of the desk. This was my first official day back in the corporate world.I took a deep breath and opened the first file. My hands were still a little unsteady, but I forced myself to focus. I had missed this .. the structure, the purpose, the feeling of doing something meaningful again.A few minutes later, Aaron stepped into my office. He looked sharp in his dark suit, as always.“I have a meeting in ten minutes next door,” he said. “My office is right beside yours. If you need anything, just call me.”I nodded. “I’ll be fine.”He paused at the door, look

  • Steal My Heart, Mr Cole    Chapter 43

Laura Sterling The hallway felt longer than it should have. I pushed my wheelchair forward steadily, keeping pace with Amelia’s slow and seductive steps. She walked beside me with perfect posture, one hand occasionally brushing her hair back like she was posing for an invisible camera. Aaron followed a few steps behind us, silent but present. Every push of the wheels reminded me how much effort this took, but I refused to show any weakness. Amelia glanced at me with that sugary smile again. “You’re doing so well, Laura. It must be exhausting moving around like this.” I smiled back, sweet as poison. “Not as exhausting as pretending everything is fine when it clearly isn’t.” She let out a soft laugh, but it sounded forced. I could feel Aaron’s eyes on us. He was watching everything closely. We reached a junction in the hallway. Amelia slowed down even more, clearly hoping Aaron would step in and help her again. I could see her body angling toward him, ready to “feel dizzy” once

  • Steal My Heart, Mr Cole    Chapter 42

Laura Sterling The elevator ride felt endless. Every second stretched longer than the last. I sat rigidly in my wheelchair, staring at the glowing numbers as they climbed higher while keeping my hands on my laps. I wasn't nervous, I just hated being in the same space as Amelia. Amelia’s perfume was sweet and expensive ...it filled the small space, making it harder to breathe. She was still clinging to Aaron’s arm like she belonged there, her body pressed against his side in a way that looked far too comfortable. I kept my hands folded tightly in my lap, nails digging into my palms. I refused to show how much it bothered me. *She’s just an old friend of his... ,* I repeated in my head. *Nothing more.* But the way she smiled up at him, the way her fingers kept stroking his arm… it made my stomach twist. Finally, the elevator dinged. The doors slid open on the executive floor. Aaron started pushing my wheelchair forward. I straightened my back, ready to face whatever wait
