Prologue

Another beautiful day in the Bastop city, people going to work excitedly with smiles on their faces...

Alright, alright I was being sarcastic. They were honking horns and cursing each other in actuality.

It just had been a month since I have moved here and I was already ready to leave.

I could write a book about why not to live in Bastop City but in conclusion-

Lack of hygiene. Homeless and druggies were everywhere. Getting a cab was a luxury. Everything was unreasonably expensive. Gangs fight and murder was normality here and most importantly people here were simply racist and flaky.

I have detested Mr Mailman for doing this to me. Now, you might ask why I would blame the Mailman for the Bastop city crimes, it's not like he could do anything. He was just an innocent man who was doing his job.

So let me tell you that it was just a name, I came up with for someone who goes with the initials Mr X. He sends me a mail once every six months with a completely new identity package (passport, driver's license, ticket, phone, ATM card with more than enough money to survive) and a letter.

The mail always has a peculiar stamp engraved on it and his initials written in the corner.

This time I was going with the name Sophia Johnson. I knew it sounded very posh, but I was the complete opposite of that.

My real name was Celesta or so I remember. I had no idea about my last name, It's not like I cared anymore.

I even didn't know who my parents were or what were they doing now? I didn't even have any recollection of my childhood memories.

It was just blank like it had been wiped out clean.

I found it very concerning.

So I decided to find a remedy to it, I searched days after days and read books after books, anything that could help me recover my lost memories.

I even tried hypnosis and therapy but whatever I tried it never worked. After numerous failed attempts I finally gave up and just accepted my fate.

...

I pondered over my thoughts while looking outside from my bedside window when I was jolted back into my reality by my loving neighbours. " You forgot to do dishes again! Didn't you?!".

There was nothing new about this, believe me, it's part of my morning routine now. I was so habitual of this, that when once they didn't fight I felt like something was not right.

Many questions were raised in my mind like, 'what if a zombie Apocalypse had begun? Why else wouldn't they fight? Did zombies eat their brains? Were they hungry enough to eat their brains, did they even had a brain in the first place?'

Chuckling at my silly thoughts, I got out of my cosy bed unwillingly and placed my feet on the white marble floor, and regretted the decision instantly the floor was colder than a toilet seat made of brass in the Yukon.

I wanted to recoil back in my safe heaven but as Nike says in every poster Just Do It, with that affirmation in mind I left my bed behind and stood up on my feet as I stared at an empty white wall in front of me.

The wall of the rooms always reminded me of a metal asylum but I always thought of painting as a hassle, So I just kept it the same way it came.

My room was bare in comparison to other twenty-year-old girls with just a bed, a wooden desk with my laptop and iPhone charging on it and my notes scattered all over the table.

A computer chair that was now occupied by a mountain of clothing as I was too lazy to walk to my closet which was few centimetres away.

I sighed while thinking 'I have to do a bit of cleaning.'

Then I moved towards the chair to clear the mess I made but suddenly a loud grumble erupted from my stomach.

I clutched my empty stomach and decided to eat something before I started cleaning my room. I walked towards the black wooden door and opened it.

'This flat is not half bad knowing how hard it was to find flats in Bastop City', I thought as I made my way through the corridor towards my kitchen with only one goal in mind to find something edible. As I got into my kitchen, I beelined towards my fridge and opened it.

To my horror, the fridge was as bare as a newborn baby's butt. I huffed in anger as I realised that I have to go to the supermarket and buy some groceries again.

I was the person who was ready to go home before leaving the house. The only decent human interaction I could remember having last week was when I went out to buy groceries and that was also only with the cashier as it was quite hard to avoid.

I walked into my walk-in closet and changed from my trousers to black jeans and a white-fitted t-shirt. I looked at my reflection in the mirror. I looked paler than I already was, I could have camouflaged with my room's walls if I tried.

I thought that 'I should go out a little more as I looked like I was in some dire need of some vitamin D. Also, I never failed to understand how I managed to keep such a lean body with my sedentary lifestyle.

I should be heavier than an elephant at this point maybe it had something to do with my genetics.'

I combed my snow-white hair and grabbed my shades and shielded my icy blue eyes. Then I snatched my wallet and keys to my flat and made my way towards the main door and opened it.

I Instantly regretted the idea as I saw a brunette standing out in the corridor, I stepped out of my flat and locked it behind me being as discrete as possible but my luck abandoned me once again.

As I heard a high-pitched voice behind me, " Hey it's nice to see you!!"

I turned around coming face to face with a brunette who was giving me a sickly sweet smile. I didn't know much about her except that her name was Meghan and she was quite the eye candy with a small round face, green eyes, and plump lips.

She usually wore a very tight-fitting dress that suited her shapely figure and high heels. I didn't even know how she managed to walk in them without tripping.

I straightened my back and asked in my soft voice, " It's nice to see you too, how have you been?" While giving her a sweet smile.

" Not too bad. How about you?"

" Great," I said trying to end the conversation as soon as possible.

" That's good, So do you have any plans tonight? because If you don't we can go and watch this new movie that has just come out. I heard from colleagues that it is a really good movie."

I forgot to mention her very important characteristic when I was describing her that she was indescribably clingy.

This was the third or fourth time that I would be rejecting her but somehow she didn't get the hint. All I did was once helped her with groceries and she took it as an open invitation to terrorize me.

" Oh, that was nice of you to ask but I already have some things planned with someone...", I answere with a fake polite smile plastered on my face.

Suddenly, the mood of the room changed as she threw daggers at me with her eyes before she questioned in a more aggressive tone than I could ever imagine, "Is that someone is the boy from the second floor?"

I was not the best when it comes to confrontations. So I just nodded without realizing what I was doing and eventually when I did, It was already too late, the damage had been done.

She looked towards me with hatred and disappointment dripping from her eyes.

Then she screamed," why him and not me?! Is he the reason you keep ignoring me?! Is he more attractive than me?! Or does he have a better body, what is it that you want him but not me?!"

Before I could respond she turned away and sprinted inside her apartment. Then slammed the door behind her.

I was left shocked by her reaction, 'she acted like we were married for years and I was leaving her with kids for my secret lover. She realizes that I didn't even know about her existence before last week. I guess that she must have watched too much rom-com.'

I turned around and made my way towards the elevator. The corridor was now completely vacant of any sound. I strolled on the black marble floor as bare yellow walls pass by me.

I finally reached the new-looking elevator and pushed the red button showing the arrow sign. I waited for it to open while I hummed a familiar melody and tapped my foot on the floor.

After some time the elevator doors slowly opened and I stepped inside as it closed behind me. I turned around facing the doors as I left a small sigh.

It started moving downwards, nothing better to do, I just stared at metallic doors until they finally opened. I got outside of the elevator, on the ground floor.

There sat a middle-aged man named Mr Aurther, in the reception area behind the desk while scrolling through his phone. As his golden locks curtained his face while his hazel eyes were fixated on his phone.

The reception area was quite decorated compared to the building. The paintings were scattered on the royal blue walls surrounding me as a beautiful chandelier hanging above me.

I walked on the red carpet towards the glass doors with a desire to exit the building. When I reached the entrance, a man in his late forties greeted me.

He held warmth in his brown eyes as he passed a charming smile. His dark skin gleamed in the sunlight.

I smiled back at him and said," hello john, How are you doing today?"

He responded with a cheerful voice, "I am doing good kiddo. How have you been it's quite new to you?"

If only he knew, I mentally sighed as I replied, "Yes, but I am settling in quite nicely, people here are very welcoming"

He gave me a satisfactory nod, and I took it as my cue to leave. I walked through the glass doors, joining the crowd of people walking on the streets.

...

I started to make a mental list of things I would be needing to buy from the supermarket. As I was too lazy to make an actual list. I walked slowly immersed in my thoughts.

when suddenly a guy wearing a very tight-fitting office suit came from nowhere and walked right into me.

I lost my footing and struggled to balance myself trying not to fall, while he just walked past me while arguing with someone on his phone. He didn't even bat his eye towards me.

I finally found the right footing and gained back my balance. Then I turned around as I found him standing on the Bus stand.

I glared at him while thinking, 'people like him were the reason for almost everything horrible in this world. They had no conscience whatsoever, dead from inside.'

I muttered some swears in his regard and then I turned around and continued on my way.

After some time, I finally lost the crowd of people behind. I walked alone through the empty pavements while thinking nothing in particular.

When suddenly a shudder ran through my spine which made me stop in my tracks. I slowly turned around and scanned my surrounding.

The street was completely void of people. Except for some carton boxes lying around, nothing was there. Not even a street cat came into my view. It just creeped me out more, I took some deep breaths trying to calm my nerves down while to convince myself that it was just my mind playing tricks on me before I continued on my way. When suddenly a carton box flew across the street.

My heart came to my throat and alarm bells started going off inside my head as I turned almost instantaneously and started running as fast as my leg could carry me.
