Promises mean nothing when he’s everywhere.

The house was quiet that afternoon, sunlight slanting through the tall windows, dust floating in the air like tiny sparks. I sat cross-legged on the old rug, scrolling through my phone, pretending to look busy. Mason was stretched out on the couch, one arm behind his head, the other lazily flipping through a book he wasn’t even reading.

I could feel his eyes on me long before I looked up.

“What?” I asked, not lifting my gaze from the screen.

“You sigh a lot,” he said, his voice deep and amused.

“I do not,” I shot back instantly.

“Yes, you do. You’ve sighed at least ten times in the last half hour.”

I rolled my eyes. “Maybe you’re just boring.”

He chuckled under his breath. “That’s cute.”

I hated how that sound made my stomach flip. The way his laugh seemed to fill the room, low and warm. I needed to redirect before I melted into a puddle right in front of him.

So I did the one thing I knew would get a reaction.

    Lily: The sound of footsteps came from the living room and I quickly wiped my face with a towel. I rushed out and found Mason. “Have you been crying?” was the first question he asked as soon as saw me. Shit! How did he even know that? “What?
