Caterina.

I stood in the centre of my bedroom, back at my apartment, the late afternoon sun spilling through the sheer curtains and casting soft shadows across the walls.

The air smelled faintly of jasmine, the scent clinging to the pillowcases I'd used.

Currently, I was barefoot, wearing a faded old t-shirt from back when I was in high school and shorts that barely held their shape anymore. My hair was still damp from the shower, and I hadn't bothered with makeup.

There was something so grounding in feeling so utterly plain.

Plus I hadn't seen Luca in... two, three... or was it four days?

Currently, I sat cross-legged on the bed, a half-empty bottle of water beside me, an untouched granola bar on the nightstand. My phone buzzed every now and then with a message from someone I didn't want to deal with.

I ignored them all.

Luca's voice still echoed in my mind. "You just need a little push."

Like I hadn't heard variations of that before. From teachers. From my own mother. From my father

LucaIf there was one thing I know now, it was that Caterina makes promises without asking me first.I was sitting in my study when she dropped the news, standing stiffly by the door, her arms folded. She wasn't asking or requesting for her friend to come to the estate... my estate. Rather, she was telling me she wanted Alicia to come to the estate. She was bringing someone into my home. My private world.Did I like it? No, I didn't. I didn't even trust it. But it was easy to see this for what it was... a test. Caterina was giving me a chance to continue to redeem myself. A threat that was dressed as peace. So I said yes."Of course I'll send the men to get her." I said through clenched teeth. And two black SUVs were dispatched within the next hour... one in front, and one behind... escorting Alicia from the city all the way to my gates, as if she was some kind of dignitary or criminal mastermind.I watched her arrival from the window of my bedroom. The sun was hitting her hair as she

Caterina. The silence of the hotel room buzzed against my skin. Luca’s breathing was already steady when I woke up, his body warm beside me, as he practically had me in his arms, almost squishing me.The pouch was still inside my purse. Untouched, and unspoken for. Its presence there felt like a live wire, like a bomb that was ready to explode, shocking me every single time my thoughts drifted back to it."You want to be free, don't you?" The man's words slithered back into my brain with full force. "You're not like them. Just a drink. One drink would do the work."Better people would have discarded it the moment they left that restroom. Better people would wonder what those people actually wanted to do with a sleeping Luca.Kill him?Torture him?Was I so open to the idea of leaving that people were not even scared of approaching me so they could use me as some sort of prop for their plan? And what if this was poison? Why was I believing a random man I met in a party for a brief seco

Caterina.I barely registered that soft click of the hotel door closing behind me since Luca was the one who locked the door. And not when my mind was going at a thousand miles per hour. So to quiet those thoughts, and not think about anything again, the moment Luca turned around, I kissed him. There was no malicious intent surrounding it. Just the heat. I needed the heat, and the anger then to help me regulate the raw, emotional fire in my chest. My fingers were tangled in the lapel of the suit jacket he wore, pulling him down with all the desperation that had been mounting within me for days now. "Reject me. Push me away. Say no..." My mind kept on whispering those words to me as the kiss deepened. Luca didn't hesitate... oh, no. The man kissed me back, much more harder than I had expected. He kissed me like he was starving, and he needed to claim me all over again. That was how bad our situation was. Those lithe hands of his were on my waist, then it moved down to my hips, then

Caterina.Unfortunately, I had become Luca's shadow. No matter where he went, I was there. Every single meeting he attended, with men who were either suck ups to him or just cold in general, who acted like I didn't exist unless it suited them. Every single blood soaked, chandelier room where the wonderful hosts had eyes that were so cold and hands too sharp.Did he bring me to those meetings as a sort of protection, or he just wanted to punish me over my refusal to talk to him?Either way, I hated it.Caterina De Luca, aka Me, had been reduced to a handbag. Luca’s living accessory. When he started this whole charade, it was tolerable. I stuck close to his side, keeping one hand free to graze his jacket, whole my eyes darted around the room, searching for familiar threats. But as the days dragged on, and the stares from the others grew even longer, it became rather exhausting. Why were the men whispering behind their raised glasses? Surely, they did not think Luca would do anything to

Caterina. The moment the meeting ended, I was out of there.Faster than an animal in heat. The heels of my shoes echoed way too loudly in the marbled corridor as I walked as fast as I could without breaking into a full sprint. My hands trembled slightly, now curled into fists by my sides. I couldn't even bear to look back. Not when I was pretty sure Luca was right behind me, or at the very least, a few paces behind. Certainly I could not look at those men in the room.I needed to be away. From their stares, and the horrible words they utter whenever they thought I was not looking or not listening. From the heat that had risen in my cheeks when that man had called me a pet... A fucking pet.How dare he?And then Luca’s voice had thundered through the room in my defense. He had done a good thing. That was for sure. But I was still reeling from the fact that I hadn't been allowed to speak for myself. How are they so...Ughhh.I didn't even have the right words to use for them. It was t

CaterinaI could feel it in my bones... that kind of chill that wasn't just about how low the temperature was, but rather about the power that came from every... no, that was too much... most of the men in this place.Old, ruthless power. It stepped into the marble floors, clung to the velvet chairs, and hung in the still air like some sort of whispered threat. We were ushered to a seat at the long, polished table in the room that looked like it had once belonged to a kind. There were portraits of long dead men lining the walls for reasons I couldn't even think of.Who would want a dead man to preside over their meetings? Were they set in some sort of old ways that required them to call upon the dead men for wisdom or shit like that?To say the whole thing was disturbing was kind of an understatement. I hasn't said a word since we entered. Neither had most of the other men at the table. Only Luca’s voice cut through the silence now, and then... quite measured and confident... as he e
