Maya's POV
“Just… a little… more…” I groaned, reaching up a high shelf for a certain box. That being something my roommate, Jills, had asked me to get for her.
“Pregnancy test?”a teasing voice sounded above my head, before someone took a box off the shelf and handed it to me.
I turned and froze when I laid eyes on a man in a trench coat with a black hat concealing the top half of his face behind me. I felt a bit frightened by his large build, and did not want to get in trouble with him. With a soft ‘thank you’, I took the box and hastily made my way to the register.
“Just this, please. For a friend,”I said to the cashier, awkwardly adding that last part to avoid any misunderstanding from them.
Though, if I could be honest, I really wished the test was for me, but for werewolves like my boyfriend, it would go against tradition if we were to have a baby before we wed, or get marked as mates beforehand. This was especially true given his status in the pack as the Delta.
Once I finished paying for the test, I turned to leave the pharmacy, only to bump into something hard again, dropping the bag and my purse, with the contents all spilled out.
“Oh, sorry-” I said, catching my tongue when I saw it was that man from before standing behind me again. What did he want with me? I didn’t know if I did anything to offend him, and I didn’t want to know, as I hastily picked up my belongings off the floor and took my leave. “Sorry. Excuse me.” Without heeding to his call, I left the building.
It was not much longer until I arrived in my apartment, which I shared with my roommate.
“Maya, is that you? Did you bring the thing I asked for?” Jills called, walking to the front door with her brown hair up in a bun, with her green eyes staring at the bag in my hand.
“Yeah, I bought the pregnancy test, Jills,” I answered, handing her the bag. “If you don’t mind me asking, though, how are you so sure that you’re with a child? I don’t think I’ve ever heard about you being in a relationship.”
In this world where werewolves reigned supreme, it was quite difficult for humans like us to be able to live normal lives. There was one guaranteed way for us to coexist with werewolves, though. That was if we were to be a werewolf’s mate. In that case, not only were we guaranteed sponsorship amongst their people, but we would be able to avoid getting hunted by any rogue or cruel wolves. I was one of the several humans in this pack who was lucky to have found a boyfriend amongst the werewolves.
Jills avoided my eyes when I asked that question, confusing me greatly with her actions. Was her relationship with her boyfriend a complicated one? Then again, there was the tradition werewolves follow. She was probably worried I might spread word about her boyfriend getting her pregnant, and get that guy in trouble.
“If it’s too difficult to explain, it’s fine. I was just curious, since I never heard you talk about having found a lover,” I told Jills.
“No, it’s not that. It’s a bit difficult, yes. But not in the way you think,” Jills said, increasing my confusion.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, the baby is...” She paused, looking away uneasily.
Before Jills could continue, the door opened, and my boyfriend Jayden walked right into the apartment.
“Jills! You are absolutely, positively right! No matter how I think about it, you are actually right,” he blurted out, completely disregarding me, “I cannot keep doing this useless waiting game with Maya. If I want to keep my Delta position secured, I need to wed and have a child. Thanks to you, I don’t have to worry about the child, but we need to get together now or it will cause a-” He stopped when he finally took notice of me, who stared at him in great shock and stupor at what I was hearing from his mouth. “... huge scandal. Hi, Maya.”
What the fuck? Jayden… He cheated on me with my roommate?! How… How could he?! How could Jills?!
“Jayden… What is going on here?” I asked in a trembling voice, unable to keep my cool.
Rather than answer, he said, “Wow, Maya. I gotta say, I did not expect you to be back so soon. I thought you were busy with that little volunteering event you had been doing to rank up merits for your stay here.”
The way he avoided that topic made me even more sad. Especially as there was no point in him hiding the truth from me any further. I bit back the pain and took in a shaky breath. “I asked a question. W-What’s the meaning of all that you just said?”
That time, he let out a sigh, with a bored expression on his face. “Do you really not know why?” he asked back, “You didn’t think I would stick to that outdated tradition for long, did you? Times are changing, and guys like me have needs. Needs you can’t seem to fulfil."
My eyes widened as disbelief grew in me with every word that came out of his mouth. It was when he took a knee and pulled out a familiar-looking box, however, that my heart completely cracked open.
“Now then… this is not exactly what I had in mind when I thought about proposing to my mate, but Jillians Sephir… Will you marry me, and be my mate for the rest of our lives?”
Jills glanced my way, and gave me a mischievous smirk, in which she quickly hid behind a shy, hesitant one. “Oh, Jayden. I truly do want to, but I’m scared of what Maya would think. You know she won’t approve of this. Won’t you, Maya?”
How rage filled me from that little innocent act she was putting on. I knew I saw that smirk on her face, and I knew she actually couldn’t care less what I really thought.
“You liar!” I shouted in tears, brushing past Jayden to slap her. Before my hand could hit her face, though, Jayden grabbed my wrist and pushed me away from her.
“Hey! You keep your filthy hands away from my mate!” he growled at me, “You seem to have forgotten your place here, Maya. You’re just a pitiful human in a wolf pack. You really think I am sponsoring you out of love? I have only been playing nice with you. Your kind don’t even have as many rights as Omegas. The only exception to that are any humans we werewolves truly fall for, and you are not one of them. It’s time you get that through your little head.”
How my rage grew from his words and reaction. There was not even an ounce of regret being shown from his face; only disappointment and amusement in me. I should be the one disappointed.
“Well, if that’s how it is, then I guess there is no need for me to stay, is there?” I challenged, tears forming in my eyes. “You want to be with Jills that badly? Then stay with her!”
Soon as I choked that out, without another word, I rushed out of the apartment.
It was dark outside and the rain was torrential; each drop burnt my skin with its icy coldness. The storm outside matches the storm within me. What in the world was I thinking? Agreeing to come to this place? I couldn’t believe how stupid I was. My roommate was pregnant with my boyfriend’s child, and I was the one who bought the pregnancy test? My life was completely a joke.
A sudden ringing pulled me out of thoughts, and I instantly grew annoyed by the sound as I reached into my pocket and took out my phone, answering the call. “Hello?”
“Meet me in Sweethunt Café tomorrow at 10AM to switch phones,” a voice ordered.
My mood was already sour before. Hearing this ridiculous demand from some stranger? I was far from in the mood for games. “Do you not have anything else to do in your day?! Are you fucking delusional like everyone else?! If you have time making scam calls, how about you do something that’s worth anyone’s time!” Without waiting for a response, I angrily hung up on the stranger.
After hanging up on them, I took a pause and breathed for a few. No matter how I think of this, complaining about my situation wasn’t going to help me. Although, there was still one person I can trust in this world. She would be willing to help me out, even if just a bit.
My mind made up, I looked down at my phone, prepared to make a call, when I came to realize something. The one reason why the call came to me earlier.
‘Wait… This isn’t my phone.’
Zeke's POVI raised my brow as I looked down at the phone in my hand, taken aback by the receiver of the call I made just seconds ago. Not once had I ever been spoken to in the manner she had taken with me. Even through the phone, any werewolf picking up my call would become too intimidated, hearing my voice alone. And yet, whoever this person was did not even stutter as she spoke to me in such a manner.I was not the only one intrigued by this, clearly, for my Beta- Ethan- most especially found this amusing, if the way he was trying to conceal his mouth was of any indication of such.“Ha ha ha. Wow, did that really take me by surprise. I didn’t think there was actually a human gutsy enough to yell at you the way that one did,” he said, trying to stop himself from laughing, only to fail miserably.“Keep laughing, and I will take that as you volunteering to be set as a picture-perfect example of what will happen to any who defy me,” I threatened, prompting Ethan to instantly cease his
Maya's POV“Thanks again for letting me stay, Corina,” I thanked, having tea at a friend’s place.“Of course, Maya. You know I’ll always have your back,” Corina said. According to my knowledge, Corina was half-werewolf and half-human. When she was eight, her family moved to this pack and settled in the outskirts of the city. We met at a volunteer event I had to attend- to gain the favor of other werewolves- and Corina was the only one who helped me get through the whole thing. She had been a true friend to me since then.“Still, what happened earlier today? You completely left me after you got that text. Did something happen between you and your boyfriend?” Corina asked. The second she asked me that, I was instantly reminded of what I found out between my ‘roommate’ and now-ex-boyfriend. I grew so angry, but I didn’t want to accidentally snap at Corina, who had nothing to do with the situation. So I took a deep breath before starting to tell Corina what happened earlier today. How Ji
Maya's POVI arrived at Sweethunt Cafe, where there were barely any customers within. I couldn’t help but feel frustrated. Yesterday, I had thought the person who called me was a scammer, a prank caller, and went off on him. He was probably annoyed with my manner. Although I wasn't sure if he would show up, I still took a seat at an empty table, ordered a cup of coffee, and waited. Hours passed since I arrived. The sunlight near the window became dazzlingly bright, and the busy hours were coming to an end in the cafe. And yet, with every customer that had been coming by, not one approached me nor seemed remotely familiar. ‘He won’t come. I should go back to Corina’s. She might be worried about me,’ I sighed, rose from my seat and left payment for the coffee and lunch on the table and took my leave. As I exited out the cafe, my head down in disappointment with my day, I didn’t notice someone walking in front of me and bumped into that person.“Oof! I’m sorry. I-” I paused as I looked
Maya's POVNight had come, and so was the Crescent Night Gala. After changing into some elegant dresses, Corina and I made our way to the party. While she had on a nice green dress with a crossover neck, I was wearing a navy blue dress with only one strap on the left side, and a slit on the right. When we arrived, the party was in full swing. I subconsciously kept one hand down by my side, trying to cover the slit that was revealing my thigh. “I really wish you would lend me that dress instead,” I said, not used to these sorts of dresses.“Ah, don’t be shy. You look great in that,” Corina said. “Besides, you’re wearing a mask. No one would know it’s you.”“Am I supposed to be reassured or offended by that?” I questioned, having mixed feelings with that statement. Corina only giggled, and gave me a pat on the back. “Chin up. You look stunning, Maya. Oh, how about the punch bowl? I’m feeling parched.”I nodded to that, and followed her to the punch bowl. As we made our way there, thou
Zeke's POVI stared down at the flustered human, left speechless with her mouth gaping like a fish’s. I must admit, though I did question Jayden for his new ‘girlfriend’s’ stupidity, there was something about this human’s reaction that was endearing. ‘Amusing’, even. So much so, I wanted to tease her more. But there’s one werewolf nearby- the one laughing with her just seconds ago- then staring at us in shock with her jaw dropped. Through my mask, I narrowed my eyes in a glare, in which she jumped at, no doubt sensing the glare.“Right. So, I will be on my way now. You two can… Yeah. See you later, Maya,” she hastily said, walking away. The human became baffled by her friend’s sudden leave and reached out to her. “Wha-?! Wait, Corina!” Despite her call, her friend was already long gone.I turned back to the human, grabbing her by the hand. “How about a dance, milady?” I asked in a low tone.I could feel her tremble at my request, before nodding. I led her to the dance floor, near the
Maya’s POV“Your grandmother thought what?!” I gasped, baffled by what the Alpha told me.“I said because of that photo I told you about, Grandma believes we’re in a relationship. With you being pregnant with my child,” he repeated. We were in his car, driving to the clinic to get my arm treated, which was starting to bruise. Not because of the Alpha when he pinned me to the wall earlier, but more from when Jayden grabbed me before that. As he drove, the Alpha explained the questions his grandmother was asking me. Though the explanation did answer the point of those questions, it left me with more confusion. Particularly…“Can’t we tell her that it was a misunderstanding?” I inquired.“If it were that simple, we wouldn’t be in this situation to start with,” he pointed out.We soon arrived at a clinic, where the doctor was treating my arm. As he was giving me treatment, the Alpha went to make a phone call right outside the building. Not long after he finished treating my arm and left
Maya’s POVI awoke to the alarm clock ringing with a yawn. After shutting the alarm off, I got out of bed and tidied myself up for the big day.“You’re really going to find a job?” Corina asked, cooking some omelet for breakfast. “You know, it wouldn’t hurt to try being more seductive on Alpha Zeke. Win over his heart so you don’t have to worry about living in the pack?”“Of course I am sure.” I rolled my eyes slightly at her ‘suggestion’, remembering a few of those techniques Corina tried to teach me after we got back from the clinic two nights ago. “And I doubt I would ever win him over, no matter how much makeup you put on me or what sort of… ‘love technique’ you’ll teach me.”Corina pouted at me then. “Even though it would’ve been a whole lot easier for you if you would learn these techniques?”I nervously laughed at her insistence in teaching me these things, and looked at the clock. “Oh! Would you look at the time? I gotta go.”“The omelet is almost done, though,” Corina told me
Maya’s POVI whipped my head to the source, where I paled to see Alpha Zeke standing next to me.“A-Alpha. I was just… Um…” My voice was caught in my throat, unable to speak or save myself from the trouble I was sure to be in.“So now that you’ve heard, tell me, what are your thoughts?” he asked with a dangerous smile on his face.I wasn’t sure if he was testing me or genuinely asking for my opinion, as my mouth opened itself to answer. “Well, Isabelle is beautiful, and she is a well-known influencer. Are you sure about breaking up with her? You should probably reconsider.”I wanted to slap myself at the last part, for it sounded much like I was telling him what to do. How could I- a mere human- dare order a werewolf with little to no relation to me? Much less an Alpha. To my slight relief, the Alpha scoffed at my answer. “We don’t have the relationship you're imagining. We're just in it for what we want. My wealth and fame for her body. That was the deal we made,” he said. For her b
