The Man Behind The Lie

The first thing I noticed when I entered Reed House was the security camera above the hallway. It had been turned three degrees to the left.

Most people would not have noticed. It still covered the entrance and appeared functional, but it no longer watched the staircase.

Someone had adjusted it manually. Either Calvin’s security team was changing coverage before the Laurent event, or someone inside Reed House was moving without permission. Neither option improved my opinion of this place.

I checked the time. Staff moved through the lower floors preparing for the auction, and security had increased with the event approaching. If someone wanted to move something through the property unnoticed, this was the perfect distraction.

I stepped toward the security panel and reviewed the access records. Most entries were routine, then I found one that was not. A service door had been opened late last night using a temporary authorization code, but no employee name was attached.

“Looking for something?”

Calvin’s voice came from behind me.

I turned slowly. He stood at the end of the hallway in a dark shirt with his sleeves rolled up, looking less like the CEO and more like a man who had not slept enough. It should not have made him seem more dangerous but it did.

His gaze moved from my phone to the security panel.

“You walk quietly for someone who owns half the island.”

“Most people announce themselves when they enter places they are not supposed to be.”

“I was checking the security.”

“My security.”

“Yes.”

“You believe I’m hiding something.”

“I believe everyone on this island is hiding something.”

He stepped closer but stopped several feet away.

“And breaking into my system helps you find the truth?”

“I didn’t break anything. I noticed a problem.”

“You accessed a restricted panel.”

“A service door opened without a recorded employee name.”

His eyes moved briefly to the screen, then the panel flashed red.

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED.

Calvin looked at the warning, then at me.

“You weren’t the only one checking my security.”

A second alert appeared.

RESTRICTED AREA ENTRY.

His expression changed. He turned toward the staircase and that caught my attention. Calvin Reed did not look surprised.

He looked like a man who had just realized something he hoped was not true.

The red warning disappeared before I reached the staircase. A false alarm was easy to explain but a warning that appeared and vanished was not. Someone had either covered their mistake or wanted us to know they had been there.

Calvin moved ahead without calling security, and that caught my attention. A CEO would usually send someone else first. He moved like someone who knew how to enter a dangerous place without becoming the target.

The staircase led toward the private side of Reed House. My access should not have allowed me there, but Calvin did not stop me. The door at the end of the hallway stood slightly open. Calvin stopped before touching it. His eyes moved over the frame, the lock, and the floor.

“Someone forced it,” I said.

He looked at me.

“You saw that from here?”

“The gap is wrong and the latch did not settle properly.”

Calvin opened the door slowly, and I followed. The office looked untouched, then his attention moved toward the open window.

“Someone left.”

A piece of dark fabric caught against the frame and I reached for it.

“Don’t.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because if someone wanted us to find it, touching it is exactly what they wanted.”

I hated that his logic made sense. The lights went out, then the door locked behind us. A second later, the security alarm started. Calvin checked the panel.

“It’s been disabled.”

“You can tell that without opening it?”

“Yes.”

I stared at him.

“Who exactly are you?”

He looked at me for a moment too long, then footsteps approached from the hallway.

“Later.”

I reached into my sleeve and pulled out the lock pick. His eyes dropped to it.

“You carry lock picks while working as a housekeeper?”

“I carry solutions.”

The door opened and a man stepped inside, one hand reaching toward his jacket. Calvin moved first. He caught the man’s wrist before the weapon cleared the fabric and drove him into the doorframe. The attacker twisted hard, trying to break free.

I grabbed the weapon when it fell. The man looked at me, not with surprise but with recognition. He had expected someone like me to be here. He shoved a chair between us and ran toward the window. I moved after him, but Calvin caught my arm.

“Wait.”

“He’s getting away.”

“He was not escaping.”

“Then what was he doing?”

“Checking something.”

“What?”

Calvin looked back at the room, the desk, the untouched files and the security panel.

“I don’t know yet.”

A vehicle engine started outside. By the time security reached the room, the intruder was gone, but he left something behind— an access card.

I picked it up carefully and checked the name printed on the front, it’s a guest account. The company attached to it was connected to tomorrow’s Laurent-Reed event.

I looked at Calvin. His expression changed the moment he saw the name.

“You know this account?” I asked.

His eyes lifted to mine.

“I know the company attached to it and the person who entered this room was not trying to steal something.”

“Then what were they doing?”

“Checking whether something was here.”

My fingers tightened around the card.

“What something?”

His attention moved to the open window, then back to the card.

“I don’t know yet.”

“You know more than you’re saying.”

“So do you.”

Security arrived seconds later. Calvin gave brief instructions. He did not mention that I had been inside the room or why I was there. He only reported the unauthorized entry, the damaged lock, and the missing suspect.

A man hiding a crime would protect himself first but Calvin protected the investigation. I followed him downstairs after security cleared the room.

“You could have told them I was trespassing.”

“You were. But you were not the reason someone broke into that room.”

I stopped walking and he stepped closer, but not enough to trap me.

“I would be more concerned if you trusted me because I helped you.”

I had no answer ready then my phone vibrated.

“S?”

Vic’s voice was calm and focused.

“I heard there was a security alert at Reed House. Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Call me if anything changes.”

The line ended. When I lowered the phone, Calvin looked at the access card in my hand.

“The company connected to that card is one of the same companies that appeared in the Apollo records.”

My attention sharpened.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“Then why haven’t you given this information to the police?”

His expression changed slightly.

“Because I don’t know who I can trust.”

The words stayed with me because Eli had trusted someone, and he disappeared. Calvin took the card and placed it on the table between us.

“I’m not asking you to believe me. Stop assuming every secret I keep is evidence against me.”

I crossed my arms. Then he opened a drawer beneath the table and removed a thin folder. The label matched the company on the access card.

“You’ve been investigating them.”

“Yes.”

The answer should have made him less suspicious but it didn’t. Calvin Reed was not just protecting his resort. He had been searching for the same hidden operation I was. He opened the folder. Inside were copies of shipping records, payment transfers, and event documents.

One page sat on top. A cargo reference number, and the same number from Eli’s investigation. I looked at Calvin.

“You had this before I arrived.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

His eyes held mine.

“Because someone started moving through my company.”

Before I could answer, the hallway lights flickered and every camera monitor in the security room went black. Calvin turned toward the screens and my hand moved toward my weapon. A message appeared on the main monitor.

Three words.

STOP LOOKING BELOW.

Calvin went still.

“Below what?”

For the first time since I met him, Calvin looked like he had seen something he did not want to find. And that scared me more than the message.

Lena pulled the stitch tight beneath my ribs and looked at me over her mask.“That story doesn’t fit the wound.”I gripped the edge of the exam bed. “I hit a display cart.”She cut the thread, then glanced at my shoulder. “And that?”“Different accident.”“You have a lot of accidents for a housekeeper.”My uniform shirt lay beside me, still damp from the pavilion’s suppression system. I reached for it. Lena moved it out of reach.“I’m not finished.”She removed her gloves. “You’re not the first employee I’ve treated after an accident that didn’t make medical sense.”That got my attention. “How many?”“Enough that I started keeping track.”“What kind of injuries?”“Bruising reported as a fall. Symptoms that looked like drug exposure but were blamed on food poisoning. A deep cut listed as broken glass.” Her mouth tightened. “The edges looked more like a blade.”“Same person?”“Three different employees.”“What happened to them?”“One resigned. Another stopped appearing on the staff sche

The pavilion still smelled of smoke and chemicals when we returned to the search area. Damien’s radio snapped through the hiss of the dying suppression system.“Backstage is clear. No sign of him.”I pushed away from the overturned cart. Pain caught beneath my ribs, but I kept moving toward the service door.Calvin stepped into my path.“He can still be inside the pavilion.”“He isn’t worth you opening that wound further.”“You don’t know how bad it is.”His gaze dropped to the blood darkening my wet uniform.“I know enough.”I tried to move around him. His hand closed around my good arm, firm but careful.“Let go.”“When you stop trying to chase an armed man while bleeding.”“He got away because we stopped.”Calvin’s face tightened. “He got away because I chose not to leave you on the floor.”The answer landed harder than I wanted it to. Damien crossed back from the service door.“Security is checking the loading access and exterior paths. If he stayed on resort property, we’ll narro

  • Sunlit Paradise: Undercover Desire   Blood and Secrets

The first thing I noticed was that Calvin Reed checked the door before he checked the blood on his own shirt.A man who owned luxury resorts was supposed to worry about cameras, guests, and public scandals. He was not supposed to move through a room like he expected someone to break in.Vic and Damien had stayed behind with security to handle the aftermath in the gallery. They were reviewing the attack, checking the area, and making sure the attacker had not returned.Calvin had brought me away from the crowd before dealing with anything else. He stood near the entrance for two seconds, listening. Then his attention shifted to the cut on my forehead.“Sit. You’re bleeding.”“I’m aware.”“You’re also pretending it doesn’t hurt.”I reached for the tissue on the table and pressed it against my temple. The movement pulled at my shoulder, reminding me that the fight in the gallery had left more than a few injuries behind.Calvin noticed. He opened the medical kit on the table, and I steppe

  • Sunlit Paradise: Undercover Desire   The Locked Gallery

“Locked doors usually mean rich people are hiding something.”Belle caught me watching the sculpture crate roll through the door marked STORAGE TWO. The blood-stained packing vanished inside with it. The handler stepped out, tapped his key card against the reader, and the lock clicked.“Or something,” I said.I photographed the stain on my glove and sealed it inside a clean housekeeping bag. I could not send it through normal channels without explaining how I got it, but I was not throwing it away.“I need to check something in the supply area,” I told Belle. She studied me, then nodded. “Go.”I kept working while watching Storage Two, but the sculpture never came back out. When preparations ended, a temporary event worker left his clipboard and access card on a service cart while he carried a display stand away.I crossed the corridor, took the card, and swiped it at Storage Two. After returning it to the cart before he came back, I slipped inside. Rows of covered artwork and shippin

The pavilion doors opened fully, and the noise inside Solara Gallery faded as people noticed who had arrived.A crate handler lowered his clipboard. Two women arranging auction folders stopped mid-sentence, and even Belle, who rarely treated wealth as a reason to behave differently, straightened beside me.I slipped the burner phone into my pocket and closed the inventory folder over the serial number I had been checking.Belle leaned closer. “That is what money looks like when it learns to smile.”A woman entered beside Conrad Laurent, whom I recognized from the operation briefing. She wore a pale dress, simple jewelry, and the calm confidence of someone who never had to ask whether she belonged.Cass crossed the gallery and hugged her.“You’re late.”“By three minutes.”Clarisse laughed and kissed her cheek before turning to Calvin. “You remembered the briefing.”“Cass threatened me.”“Then civilization survives.”She handed him a folder and straightened the edge of his cuff without

  • Sunlit Paradise: Undercover Desire   House Rules

The message disappeared from the security monitors before we could trace its source. Calvin searched the system but we found nothing. He still refused to explain what was below the resort, and I refused to ignore the fact that he knew more than he admitted.By the time the auction preparations began, we had one agreement: Watch everything and trust nothing, especially each other. The suspicious crate moved while I still had the auction list open. Two event workers rolled it away from the rear display tables toward the west staging corridor. I shut the folder and slipped the burner phone into my pocket.I followed at a distance as workers adjusted display lights and cleared packing materials from the pavilion floor. The crate reached a security rope just as an employee unhooked it for the trolley. I caught the altered label once before it vanished around the corner.“Miss, that area is restricted.”The guard looked at my event badge.“I’m checking the auction inventory.”“You can chec
