LOGINChapter 5
For one terrifying second, the whole room seemed to freeze. Zane's heart slammed against his ribs. Jaxon's face went white. If this guy talked, everything would blow up… their teams, their careers, the secret they had barely kept hidden. One word from him and the rumors would turn into proof. Jaxon reacted fast. He sat up straight, his voice sharp and steady. “He was just helping me with my ankle… now get out!” The teammate blinked hard, still confused. His eyes darted between them, trying to make sense of what he had walked in on. Zane stayed perfectly still, his hands frozen. The silence stretched tight enough to snap. Finally the guy muttered, “Uh… yeah, okay,” and hurried out of the room. The door clicked shut behind him. Zane and Jaxon let out long, heavy breaths at the same time. Their hearts were still pounding like they had just skated overtime. “That was too close,” Zane whispered, his voice rough. “Way too close,” Jaxon agreed. He rubbed a hand over his face. “We almost got caught twice in one day.” They looked at each other, fear and relief mixing in their eyes. Zane finished wrapping the ankle quickly, his fingers no longer as steady. Jaxon tested his foot on the floor and winced, but he stood up anyway. “We really have to stop this,” Zane said. “No more meetings. No more texts. Our careers are now hanging by a thread.” Jaxon nodded slowly. “Yeah, accepted. I can't afford to risk it either.” They agreed again, right there in the empty visitors’ locker room. No more risks. No more stolen kisses. The secret had to end before it destroyed them both. But the harder they tried, the more difficult it was to let go. The pull between them only grew stronger. Zane caught himself smiling for no reason whenever Jaxon crossed his mind. In the middle of a boring team meeting he would suddenly remember the sound of Jaxon's soft laugh and feel warmth spread through his chest. He tried to push the feeling away, but it kept coming back. Jaxon wasn’t any better. During warm-ups he kept catching his eyes drifting across the ice to Zane. He would watch the way Zane moved confidently… shoulders set like he carried the whole team. He tried so hard to concentrate… to look somewhere else, but his gaze always found its way back. They avoided each other in public even more carefully now. They only gave short nods if they had to… no words, no lingering stares. The rumors from the parking lot had died down a little, but the jokes still floated around both locker rooms. Everyone thought it was funny. Only Zane and Jaxon knew how dangerous it had become. Days passed in a blur of hard practices and tough games. They won most of them, but the wins felt empty. Every night Zane lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, fighting the urge to send that one short text. Jaxon did the same… phone in hand, his thumb hovering over the screen before he forced himself to put it down. Then the big league meeting finally arrived. All the teams gathered in the large conference room at the league headquarters. Coaches, captains, and key players filled the chairs around the long tables. The air buzzed with talk about the upcoming national championship. Everyone wanted to know the final schedule and rules. Zane sat on one side with the Thunder Wolves. Jaxon sat on the opposite side with the Storm Hawks. They locked their eyes forward and didn’t look at each other. The commissioner walked to the front of the room and cleared his throat. The chatter died down. “Big news, teams,” he said, his voice loud and serious. “To make the finals stronger and more exciting, the Thunder Wolves and Storm Hawks will merge into one team. Starting tomorrow.” Gasps filled the room. Players looked at each other in shock. Whispers broke out everywhere. Zane felt like someone had punched him in the gut. He stared across the table at Jaxon. Their eyes locked publicly for the first time in days. Both their faces had gone pale. The commissioner kept talking, calm as if he hadn’t just dropped a bomb. “The new combined team will train together and compete as one for the national championship. To build real team spirit and unity, the two captains will share one small apartment near the new training rink. Same locker room. Same practices. Same everything.” Zane’s stomach dropped. The floor felt like it had disappeared under his chair. Share an apartment? With Jaxon? Every day? He could barely breathe. Jaxon looked just as stunned. His hands gripped the edge of the table until his knuckles turned white. He swallowed hard, trying to keep his face normal while his mind raced. The room exploded with questions and complaints. Coaches argued. Players groaned about losing their old teammates. But the commissioner raised his hand for silence. “This decision is final,” he said firmly. “It’s the best chance we have at a strong championship run. The merger starts immediately.” The meeting dragged on for another thirty minutes, but Zane barely heard another word. His thoughts spinned in circles. Living with Jaxon. Seeing him every morning. Sharing the same space after everything they had tried to hide. It felt like stepping onto the thinnest ice of his life. When the meeting finally ended, people stood up and started talking in small groups. Zane and Jaxon moved slowly towards the door, still avoiding each other in front of everyone. A league official caught up with them in the hallway. He held out a single set of keys with a small tag that read “Captains’ Apartment.” “Here you go,” the man said with a friendly smile. “Your new place is ready. Moving in starts today. Good luck building that team spirit.” Zane took the keys with numb fingers. Jaxon stood right beside him. The official walked away, leaving the two captains alone in the quiet hallway. They stared at the keys in Zane's palm. “We’re roommates now,” Jaxon said quietly. His voice was barely above a whisper. Zane looked up. Their eyes locked. The hate that had burned so hot between them for years now felt like something much scarier… something that might actually be love. And they had no idea how to stop it.Chapter 5For one terrifying second, the whole room seemed to freeze. Zane's heart slammed against his ribs. Jaxon's face went white. Chapter 4They stood still between the trucks, their hearts pounding, their eyes wide with fear. The parking lot suddenly felt too bright, too open. Any second, someone could come back.“Go,” Zane whispered, his voice tight. “Now.”Jaxon gave one quick nod and slipped away into the darkness. Zane climbed into his truck, his hands shaking as he gripped the wheel. He drove home staring at every set of headlights in his mirror, sure someone was following him.The next morning the rumors started. Both locker rooms buzzed with whispers. Teammates laughed and joked, but the jokes carried a deep edge that made Zane's stomach twist.“Did anyone see the captains talking after practice last night?” one Thunder Wolves asked with a grin.Another teammate shrugged. “Probably just arguing again. Those two can’t stand each other.”A Wolf player added, “Heard they were real close in the parking lot. Maybe they’re finally becoming friends.” He laughed loud, but his eyes swept around like he was trying
Chapter 3The moment he hit send, Zane wished he could take it back. What the hell was he doing? This was insane. If anyone found out, his career would be over. His teammates would never forgive him. The whole hockey world would laugh… or worse. He drove home in a daze. That night he barely touched his food. He kept checking his phone like a fool, but no new messages came. He lay in bed staring at the dark ceiling, wondering if Jaxon was doing the same thing somewhere across the city. The next evening, Zane arrived at the locker room ten minutes early. The building was almost empty, lit only by the dim night security lights. He paced back and forth, his nerves buzzing under his skin. Part of him hoped Jaxon wouldn’t show up. Another part hoped he would. Then the door opened.Jaxon stepped in wearing a black hoodie and jeans, hands buried deep in his pockets. There was no hockey gear this time. Just Jaxon. He looked nervous too. They stared at each other.“You came,” Jaxon said quiet
Chapter 2“What… the hell… was that?”Jaxon's words hit the quiet locker room like a slap.Zane stepped back fast, his shoulders slamming into the lockers with a loud clang. His lips still burned. His heart pounded so hard he was sure Jaxon could hear it. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, trying to erase what had just happened.“I don’t know,” Zane growled. His voice came out rough and shaky. “You started it.”Jaxon's eyes were wide, his heart still racing. He looked just as shocked as Zane felt. “No, you shoved me into the lockers!”“You came in here. You touched my face.” Zane pointed a finger at him. “Don’t pretend this was all me.”They stood there, breathing hard, just... staring at each other. The air felt thick with tension. For years they had thrown punches and insults at each other. But now, their mouths had touched in a way that felt nothing like hate. It felt hot… dangerous… wrong.Jaxon ran a hand through his wet hair. “This never happened. Got it?”“Fine by me
Chapter 1The puck dropped and the entire rink exploded with noise.Thousands of fans roared as Zane Kessler charged forward like a freight train. His skates carved deep lines into the ice. At six-foot-four, with shoulders built like steel doors, Zane had only one thought burning in his head tonight… crush Jaxon Caldwell. For five long years he had hated that name. He hated how fast Jaxon skated, how slippery and clever he was. He hated the cocky little grin Jaxon flashed every time he scored. Most of all, he hated how Jaxon always made him feel a half-step too slow. Tonight was the final regular-season matchup between the Thunder Wolves and the Storm Hawks. The winner would carry all the momentum into the nationals. Zane had promised his team… and himself… he would crush Jaxon once and for all.The first period was pure war.Zane smashed Jaxon into the boards so hard the glass shook. Jaxon bounced right back, his eyes sparkling with defiance. “That's all you got, Zane?” he shouted
