Zane Kessler, tough captain of the Thunder Wolves, has spent years vowing to crush Jaxon Caldwell, the fast, clever captain of the Storm Hawks. Their rivalry is brutal… hard checks, sharp words, pure hatred on the ice. But after Zane's team loses their biggest game of the season, Jaxon finds him alone in the empty locker room. An argument flares… then a simple touch turns into a soft, surprising kiss. Hate suddenly feels warm and confusing. From that moment, their rivalry begins to melt into something sweeter and deeper. But the hockey world isn't kind to feelings like this. Coming out could destroy their careers, and their teams would never forgive the captains falling for the enemy. Then the league drops the bombshell… the Thunder Wolves and Storm Hawks must merge into one team for the upcoming National Championship. To foster unity, Zane and Jaxon are forced to share a small apartment near the rink. They share the same space, the same locker room, and literally breathe the same air. At first it feels like torture… bumping into each other in the kitchen, sharing the couch after tough games, trying to act like nothing has changed. But the walls come down fast. Quiet talks turn into laughter. Simple meals become excuses to sit close. Stolen kisses in the dark hallway feel like winning the biggest game of their lives. Now they must lead their new team to the title while hiding a love that grows stronger every day. One wrong glance, one slip, and it could shatter everything… the championship, their careers, and the beautiful thing they’ve finally found. On the ice they were sworn enemies. Off it, they’re falling hard. And the closer they get, the more impossible it is to let go. Who will surrender first?

Chapter 1

The Final Buzzer

Chapter 1

The puck dropped and the entire rink exploded with noise.

Thousands of fans roared as Zane Kessler charged forward like a freight train. His skates carved deep lines into the ice. At six-foot-four, with shoulders built like steel doors, Zane had only one thought burning in his head tonight… crush Jaxon Caldwell.

For five long years he had hated that name.

He hated how fast Jaxon skated, how slippery and clever he was. He hated the cocky little grin Jaxon flashed every time he scored. Most of all, he hated how Jaxon always made him feel a half-step too slow.

Tonight was the final regular-season matchup between the Thunder Wolves and the Storm Hawks. The winner would carry all the momentum into the nationals.

Zane had promised his team… and himself… he would crush Jaxon once and for all.

The first period was pure war.

Zane smashed Jaxon into the boards so hard the glass shook. Jaxon bounced right back, his eyes sparkling with defiance. “That's all you got, Zane?” he shouted over the screaming crowd. Zane responded with a sharp, nasty stick check, then stole the puck and fired it straight into the net. The red light flashed. Thunder Wolves 1, Hawks 0.

The fans went wild.

But Jaxon never stayed down for long. He danced through Zane's defense like they were standing still.

He gave a quick wrist shot.

Goal. 1-1.

Then another… fake left, cut right, top shelf. 2-1 Hawks. Zane felt his neck burn with anger. His teammates shouted encouraging words, but all he could hear was the blood pounding in his ears.

The second period turned even uglier.

Their bodies crashed, sticks hooked, and their gloves nearly came off twice.

Zane took a hard slash across his knuckles. The pain burned like fire, but he didn’t flinch. He retaliated with a brutal hip check that sent Jaxon spinning across the ice.

Jaxon hit the ice hard, popped back up, and flashed that same grin. That grin made Zane want to rip his own helmet off and punch it right off Jaxon’s face.

Third period. The clock was winding down. The score was tied 2-2.

Thirty seconds left.

Zane controlled the puck behind his own net. He looked up and saw Jaxon flying across center ice, his stick low, eyes locked on him like a predator. Zane pushed off hard. The whole arena seemed to hold its breath.

He tried to shield the puck, but Jaxon was too quick. One clean poke check and the puck was gone. Jaxon took off and raced towards the Thunder Wolves’ goal. Zane chased with everything he had, his legs screaming, but Jaxon was already winding up.

He gave a slap shot.

The puck whistled past the goalie’s glove.

The Red light flashed… and the final buzzer blared.

Final score: Hawks 3, Wolves 2.

The Hawks bench exploded. Sticks flew into the air. Jaxon ripped off his gloves and jumped into his teammates’ arms. Zane stood frozen at center ice, breathing hard and staring at the scoreboard like it had stabbed him in the back.

Game over.

The Thunder Wolves' locker room felt so quiet… like a graveyard.

Most of the players had already left… some cursing, some silent, a couple others slamming lockers so hard the metal rang. Zane stayed behind. He sat on the bench still in full gear, helmet strapped on, elbows on his knees, head buried in his hands. Sweat rolled down his face and dripped onto the rubber floor. Drip… drip… drip.

He kept replaying every shift, every mistake, every time Jaxon had beaten him. The loss sat heavy in his stomach like a block of ice.

Then suddenly, the door creaked open.

Zane didn’t bother looking up. He believed it was probably Coach coming to yell. Or the janitor.

Then Slow, deliberate footsteps echoed across the room.

“Tough loss, Kane.”

That voice.

Zane's head snapped up.

Jaxon Caldwell stood in the doorway, still wearing his dark blue Hawks jersey. His hair was wet from the shower, and his cheeks were still flushed from the game. There was no smirk this time… just quiet, steady eyes watching him.

Zane dashed to his feet. The bench scraped loudly behind him. “Get out.”

Jaxon didn’t move. “You played hard tonight.”

“I said get out,” Zane growled, his voice cracking. He stepped closer, fists clenched at his sides. “You don’t belong here.”

Jaxon lifted his chin. “I just wanted to see if you were okay.”

Zane let out a bitter laugh. “Okay? You took everything from me. You happy now?”

Jaxon's jaw tightened. “I didn’t take anything. You lost the puck. That’s hockey.”

Zane closed the distance in two angry strides. They stood chest to chest. He could smell Jaxon's fresh soap, mixed with the sharp scent of sweat and cold rink air. “You always have to rub it in, don’t you? Always that stupid smirk.”

Jaxon didn’t back down. “And you always act like the world ends when you lose. Grow up, Zane.”

Hearing his first name hit Zane like a slap.

He shoved Jaxon so hard his back slammed into the lockers with a loud metallic bang. Neither of them moved after that. They just stood there, breathing fast, their faces only inches apart. Zane's hand stayed pressed flat against Jaxon's chest, right over the Hawks logo. He could feel Jaxon's heart pounding wildly under his palm.

“Get your hand off me,” Jaxon said, his voice low and rough.

Zane didn’t move. “Make me.”

The silence stretched thick and heavy between them.

Jaxon's eyes dropped to Zane's mouth, then slowly rose again. Something in the air changed… like the moment before lightning strikes.

Zane felt it too. His throat went dry.

Jaxon's hand came up slowly. His fingers brushed lightly along the edge of Zane's jaw. Zane flinched, but he didn’t pull away.

For a moment, time seemed to stop.

Then Jaxon leaned in.

Their lips crashed together.

It wasn’t gentle. It wasn’t sweet. It was raw, angry, and hungry. All five years of hate poured into one fierce kiss. Zane grabbed Jaxon's jersey and pulled him closer. Jaxon's fingers slid into Zane's damp hair and gripped tight. Their teeth clashed, tongues fought. A deep growl rumbled from Zane's throat.

Then they broke apart just as quickly as they started.

Both men stared at each other, breathing hard, their eyes wide with shock.

Zane touched his lips, like he couldn't believe what just happened.

Jaxon looked just as stunned. His hand dropped to his side. “What… the hell… was that?”
