GENERAL

“Mr. Daniel… I… I don’t think this is for me,” Phoebe stretched a white envelope forward with a smile. Her eyes flickered with fear and anxiety.

The man didn’t raise his head from the keyboard and monitor. “I’m sorry, Miss Phoebe. It’s for you. The management is surprised that you could make such silly mistakes. You almost cost the hospital everything they’d ever worked for,” Mr. Daniel responded.

Phoebe’s hands shook, her lashes quivered, and she scoffed in disbelief. Her eyes glistened with tears—the ones she wouldn’t let out in front of others. “But… it’s just a mistake. I can apologize to the client. We… we can always try the insemination one more time,” she stuttered, her smile growing thin.

Mr. Daniel raised his head for the first time. When Phoebe saw his expression, she knew at that moment that everything had slipped from her. She had lost her job, and it wouldn’t be restored no matter what. “Miss Phoebe, do you know who you messed with?”

Hesitantly, she bit her bottom lip and shook her head. “No.”

“The owner of the sperm you mistakenly inseminated into somebody else is Mr. Rivera…” He sighed. “Travis Rivera. The founder and CEO of TR Group of Companies.”

Her legs weakened, and she staggered backward as soon as she heard that name. Who wouldn’t know who Travis was? Who didn’t? Even the baby in the womb could hear things about him. He was filthy wealthy, handsome, and had the qualities every woman wanted in a man. He was the perfect man in the country. However, he hated to be messed with. He didn’t fight, but he terminated his opposition without lifting a finger. That was how powerful and connected he was.

She gasped, beads of sweat shrouding her forehead. She had made a mistake—the one she might not live to correct or turn into a story.

Daniel darted an indifferent gaze over her and returned to what he was typing. “You know what that means, Miss Phoebe. You’ve been sacked and blacklisted.”

“What!” Her voice shook. “It’s just one mistake. It wasn’t intentional.” She held her head. “Okay.” She let out a deep breath, dropping her hands. “Maybe the mistake is unforgivable, and I am sacked because I needed to be taught a lesson. That’s acceptable. But why am I blacklisted? Why? I’m human, for God’s sake. Mistakes are inevitable.” Her timbre broke.

With an expressionless face, Daniel responded. “If you think you’ve been treated unfairly, you can write to the board. There’s nothing I can do about it,” he said.

Phoebe opened her mouth, but before she could say anything, he stood up. “Oh! I have a VVIP patient to check on. I don’t think I want to make a mistake and lose my job like someone I know.” He darted a mocking gaze over her and strolled away.

She didn’t shake. Her heavy lids trembled as she watched him disappear through the stairs. Leaning her head backward, she stifled a sob.

Hopping into her car, Phoebe skimmed her eyes through the sack letter one more time, and tears rolled off her face. She had been holding everything in, but she couldn’t anymore.

“What can I call this?” she muttered and released a few bubbles of laughter. Beneath the laughter were pain and defeat she couldn’t accept because of her pride. “Is this karma? I thought it wouldn’t come so soon.” She laughed again, wiping the snot sliding out of her nostrils. Her head rested on the steering wheel, and she burst into full-blown laughter. “Rhea, you bastard!” she cursed.

Since things had played out poorly for her, she didn’t know if she should be sad about losing her job or about Rhea’s breakthrough. Being the surrogate mother of Travis Rivera was more than a lottery win. She couldn’t believe she had foolishly pushed the girl into a better place.

“No.” She shook her head, lifted it, and brought out her phone. “I need to stop them from meeting. Rhea cannot have anything better than me. No.” Her hands and voice trembled. She dialed Rhea’s contact. It beeped thrice and never connected. She tried again, and again.

Frustrated and exasperated, she flung the phone to the back seat and ran her fingers through her hair. “Rhea hasn’t found out, right?” She chuckled. “No way. She doesn’t even know him.”

With a clenched jaw, she hit her steering wheel countless times. “I have to conceal Travis’s identity from her before she finds him.”

She turned the key in the ignition, stepped on the accelerator, and zoomed off, murmuring and gritting her teeth.

Rhea glanced at the contract again and again, uncertain of what to do. She had read everything for the fifth time. It was good, but a part of her was scared. She didn’t even know who she was with. What if he was lying about being the father of the baby? His voice and demeanor scared her so much. What if he wasn’t a good man? Different what-ifs sprouted in her head.

The reality was staring straight at her. She knew she would dine with hardship and suffering if she didn’t take the risk of staying with him while she figured out what to do with her life during her pregnancy journey. Even if she said no to him, she had no family or friend to run to for shelter. The contract said he would provide everything she needed and even pay her two million dollars after the baby was born.

She shut her eyes and let out a deep breath.

At the same time, the door opened, and Travis walked in, his hands tucked in his pockets.

“What’s your decision? Signing peacefully, or do you want us to do it the hard way?”

RHEAThe conversation I had with Selene kept replaying in my head from morning until night. Also, Travis didn’t bother to check up on me till the end of the day, and I loved that. I didn’t think I could face the murderer without selling myself out. As soon as the sky started turning grey, I knew I was getting closer to my escape. I kept checking the time every second.Soon, it was 1 a.m., and as agreed with Selene, she came into my room.“Take this,” she said, handing a bag to me. “Change into this for a smooth walk,” she mumbled. “Your dress won’t do.”I took the bag from her, went into the bathroom, and changed into it. Afterward, we headed outside. The whole house was silent and void of people. There was nobody to stop us or ask us questions. However, it wasn’t the same when we stepped out of the door. As soon as we got outside, the men surrounded us.My breath hitched. How could I have forgotten that this house was heavily guarded? The men studied us with suspicious gazes. I held

RHEAMy breath hitched at the revelation. Did that mean I wasn’t his first surrogate mother? Was there somebody before me?“His first surrogate mother? Do you mean I wasn’t his first?” I asked, putting the tray on the bed.Selene stared at me for a few seconds and smiled. “You don’t need to listen to my nonsense, Rhea.” She waved her hands. “I shouldn’t have brought up this topic. It’s in the past.” Her voice shook. “I’m sure you will not end up like her.” A bitter smile formed on her lips.“Please, continue your food.”She started walking toward the door. I could tell there was something she was trying to tell me, but fear wouldn’t let her open up. Could it be that she had been threatened?I stood up. “Selene!” I called, stretching my hand forward.I let out a smile, hoping to suppress her fear and make her trust me more. “I’m sure there’s something I need to know about being Travis’s surrogate mother. I’m sure there’s something you are trying to tell me. I’m ready to listen, Selene.

RHEAHe released his grip and erupted into laughter. It was brief. The laughter stopped, and his expression went back to the usual cold and stern one.“You are such a damn liar!” he deadpanned. “You’re shamelessly trying to shift the whole blame to the same Selene who helped you up and made excuses for you.” He clicked his tongue. “I’ve never come across a single honest human.”I stared at him like a fool. He wasn’t lying about Selene helping me up and making excuses for me, but that didn’t mean I didn’t bump into her legs. From the look of things, Travis wouldn’t believe me. He would rather believe what he wanted than the words I spat out. So there was no use trying to make him see that the fall wasn’t intentional and that nobody was trying to hurt the baby. I should allow him to think whatever he wanted.“Okay, Travis. Think whatever you like.” My voice was shaky. I clutched the hem of my dress tightly as I tried to suppress the mixture of anger and frustration swirling within me. H

RHEAMy heart skipped a beat as I walked down the stairs. There were workers all around, but they were minding their own business. In the dining room, Travis and a woman were already there. I didn’t know what they were talking about, but her laughter echoed across the house. When she saw me, her laughter stopped, but the smile was still wide on her face.Standing, she left her seat and rushed to me.“You finally decided to leave your room, huh?” she said as she stood in front of me.I paused, unsure of how to react to the sudden friendliness. Firstly, I didn’t know who she was, and I was afraid my reaction might stir up some misunderstanding. But seeing how close she was to Travis, they could be lovers. She could be his girlfriend or something.Chuckling to suppress the tension within me, I nodded. “Yeah. Food is necessary, and I heard Mr. Travis loves to eat with everyone.”My gaze shifted to Travis, who had begun to eat as if my presence wasn’t forced by him.“Really…?” The smile on

RHEASigning the contract made it feel like a burden had been lifted off me. For unknown reasons, it felt like it came with a sort of inexplicable protection. I didn’t know who he was or what this decision would bear, but for a fact, I knew I hadn’t made a wrong decision for the baby.It had been more than twenty-four hours since I signed the contract, and he hadn’t been in my room ever since. The only people who came into my room were the maids, and they only came to drop off meals each time. At this point, I was afraid I would lose my shape before giving birth. Then a knock came on the door, making me raise my head. “Come in!” I said. The door opened, and a man walked in. Behind him was a maid whose head was bowed, with both hands folded in front of her.“Good morning, Rhea,” he greeted, unsmiling. My eyes wandered over him. I hadn’t seen him since I got into this house. Who was he?As though he could tell what I was thinking, he said, “My name is Darian. I’m the Alpha’s… sorry… I’m

RHEAGosh! I think this particular man would be the reason I will keep having dirty thoughts.I opened my eyes when I heard the creaking sound of the door, followed by footsteps. I saw him walking toward me with his hands in his pockets—face carved from stone and abs refined. He was the perfect example of a perfect gentleman, except that he didn’t look gentle but vicious.“What’s your decision? Do you want us to do it peacefully, or do you prefer the hard way?” he asked, indifferent. His eyes towered over me, unreadable and dark. My throat burned with uneasiness. I could die under that gaze.Squeezing my grip on the document, I swallowed the trepidation in my throat and lifted my head. “I’ve read the contract, and it’s better in a way,” I muttered. “But I have my own conditions to add.”Something flickered in his eyes at my statement, but it vanished before I could name it. Was it pride? Danger? Admiration? Shock? He folded his arms. “Hmmm… bargaining with me?” he asked, resting his b
