JULIAN

I stood there listening to my grandfather talking and making amends. But I felt nothing. I was tired and so was everyone else in that hall. It had been days since the whole ordeal started; no one had gotten any rest since. We all needed it, our bodies were going to shut shown if we didn’t rest soon. We were not dead like them, we couldn’t go on forever without getting tired.

My grandfather, I felt like it would have been better if he had not come.

JULIAN “How long are you going to keep doing this?” Mark asked as soon as he walked into the door. I was in father’s study in the palace. Preparing for Adam’s coronation. Many things were already done by the Minister of Rights. I was left with only miner things to sort out. “What are you talking about now?” I didn’t even look up. “I saw your wife.” The brush froze hid air; ink dripped onto the page smudging the words I had already written. After a moment, I gently placed it down, took the page and threw it away before laying down a new one. “She asked me to tell you to come home early.” My stomach dropped. I had planned on dragging it for as long as I could.Maybe until after the coronation. But now she asked me to come home, what excuse would I give her if I don’t go? “Julian.” I slowly lifted my heard. “How is she?” Mark sighed taking a seat. “She pretended to be fine, but I could tell she was not fine.” I stood abruptly; the chair fell behind me. “What is wrong with her, is she

  • Surviving the World to Escape Him   CHAPTER 149 – TAKING MY LIFE BACK

HELENA That day, I slept until nightfall. When I woke up, there was food on the table and no sign of my husband. I assumed he went back to the palace; there was a lot to be done there after the whole ordeal. I went to bed and when I woke up the following morning, he was still not home. I heard from the servants that he came back late in the night and left again in the early hours of the morning. Not wanting to stay at home waiting for him. I went to my shop; Rose had been the one taking care of it in my absence. There was nothing much to take care of as the whole kingdom was dealing with the dead and the Calamity Star. Things started slowly going back to normal in the days that followed. People started coming out more again and resuming their lives. But one could tell that no one was the same. People were now more cautious with everything they did. Those who were present at the palace during my awakening. Looked at me differently. Even those used to constantly cause trouble in fron

We were not dead like them, we couldn’t go on forever without getting tired. My grandfather, I felt like it would have been better if he had not come. But then again, maybe it was a good thing he came. To give Helena’s mother the closure she needed to cross over. “Helena.” Her mother called to her. She had a small, beautiful smile on her lips now. The tears were gone; she looked radiant. Helena turned to her. “I am leaving now.” My wife nodded, I knew it wasn’t easy to just let go. I knew it still hurt her to watch her leave. “I understand.” Her mother smiled warmly then looked at my grandfather. “Let us go.” Soon, they vanished. The last of the dead were gone. I sighed in relief.

  • Surviving the World to Escape Him   CHAPTER 147 – THE CLOSURE MY MOTHER NEEDED

HELENA Mother’s screams filled the hall. I didn’t know when she got there but she heard everything. She was crying to painfully that I wanted to rush to her and comfort her. but she was dead, what kind grief was that? didn’t they say the dead feel nothing? if that was the case, why did my mother show every emotion since she arrived. Pain, panic and anger. She had shown all of that, and we all saw that she wasn’t acting. So, how was she still able to feel everything? I was confused but that was not the time to ask those questions. The king had just confessed to having my father killed. He king looked at my mother. “I knew he loved you.” my mother’s screams were cut shot by the former king’s words. Tears didn’t stop but her blood shot eyes stared at the man. “I knew you were pregnant with his child.” The former king continued. “And I knew if I let him reach his kingdom and take his throne.” He shook his head. “I knew he was never going to let me go.I knew he was going to come after

HELENA I balled my hands into fists. I felt both anger and exhaustion. The whole thing was never ending, and it was draining everything I had in me. Julian looked at me. For a moment neither of us moved. Then I ran. The palace corridors were filled with soldiers. I could hear Julian’s footsteps behind me. The soldiers. Some wore our colours and others wore the same royal crest. They were fighting each other. Steel crashed against steel. People screamed. I didn’t know when Julian got in front of me. he pushed through them, cutting down anyone who tried to stop him. but the closer we got to the throne room, the quieter everything became. That frightened me more than the fighting. Julian couldn’t lose his father, even if the king was going to leave the capital. At least he would still be alive and Julian would be alright. But death, death was different. It was final and I didn’t think my husband was ready for that. we reached the doors. They opened and I stopped. The room was filled w

  • Surviving the World to Escape Him   CHAPTER 145 – THE THING MY WIFE DOESN’T KNOW

JULIAN For the first time since I have known Helena, I was afraid of what would happen after the truth. Not because I was afraid of the man standing in front of us, not because of the pendant in his hand and not even because Helena had just learned that her father had left instructions for me long before he ever knew I would become her husband. I was afraid because I knew something she didn’t. And this time, I wasn’t sure whether telling her would save her or destroy everything we had left. I looked at Helena. She was still staring at the pendant, her face pale, but there was something different in her eyes now. she was tired. Not physically. She was tired of being told that her life had been built around secrets. Tired of discovering that every answer came with another question. Tire of learning that people had made decisions about her life before she was old enough to make them herself. I understood that feeling because I had watched my family do the thing to her. I had watched

I spotted bushes not far from the road. I slowly walked there, dragging my throbbing foot. When I got to the
