“What are you doing?” I caught the guard just as he tied a small scroll to the pigeon’s leg. “I am sending a message to his Highness.” I frowned; “Wait.” My fingers tightened around the edge of the table. Every instinct urged me to run to Julian. If anyone could protect me, it was him. But if the rumours I had heard were true, then even the Crown Prince’s Palace might no longer be the safest place.

JULIAN I was about to leave the Eastern Palace when I finally got news about Helena. It didn’t say where she was, just that she was safe. Relief washed over me as I read the note over and over. I missed her and wanted her with me. but part of me knew that it was not time to bring her into the palace yet. I couldn’t even keep myself safe, I slept in different places every night just to avoid the assassins that kept making attempts on my life. not only that, but I also recently discovered that my grandmother was planning to hand my position over to my third brother. If he weren’t such a moron, I would have given it to him myself. But my brother was spineless and easy to manipulate. What kind of king would he make if he were to become the crown prince? my grandmother was always going to be around, at some point, he would have to stand on his own and lead the kingdom. What would he do then? My grandmother wasn’t thinking about the bigger picture, only power.“Your Highness, where to?” I

By the time we reached the capital, whispers filled every marketplace. Some spoke of ministers changing sides. Others claimed soldiers had begun disappearing in the night. The Queen Dowager’s name surfaced too often for my liking.Until I was sure of the situation, Julian didn’t need to know where I was. Only that I was safe. “Okay, can you at least tell me why we are here instead of his Highness’s house outside the cap

QUEEN DOWAGER I threw the jade cup I was holding, and it shattered into pieces at the guard’s feet. He dropped to his knees, head bowed deeply. “Who told you to kill people?” he trembled, he was one of men my guards had captured. I wanted to know who had the audacity to go against me. “It was the…”The guard’s eyes suddenly widened. Before I could turn, the whistle of an arrow sliced through the room. thud. The arrow buried itself in his throat. Blood sprayed across the polished floor. His mouth moved once, twice, but no words came.Blood pooled under his head. I watched the dark red circle of blood getting bigger. I tightened my fists; my nails dug into my palm drawing blood. “It is clear that people around here have forgotten who I am.” I slammed my hand hard on the arm rest.“Get in here.” my voice felt foreign even to me, it was like someone else was talking. “Your Majesty.” He gave a bow. “Go, find out what happened.” He straightened. “At once, Your Majesty.” I fixed my eyes on

JULIAN “Has there been any movement from their side?” The silence had gone on for too long. Too quiet. And that frightened me more than open hostility ever could. My guard bowed his head. “They met once, Your Highness. After that, nothing.” once. My stomach tightened. silence from people like them usually meant only one thing.Plans were being made in the shadows. It didn’t help that I still had no word about Helena. Every hour without news from the men watching over her felt like a blade pressing deeper into my chest. “What about the ministers?” I asked. I was not afraid they would suddenly withdraw their support. What terrified me was the Queen Dowager reaching them first. They had promised themselves to her before turning and pledging their loyalty to me. a humiliation she would never forget. I knew that woman well. If she could not strike me directly, she would destroy the people around me instead. One by one. Break them until they bent to her will. She had never played fair. “N

PRINCESS MALIA Four days. Four days since I sent assassins after that orphan. Not a single one had returned. Not even a dead body. My fingers tightened around the teacup until a crack spread across the porcelain. Messages were sent but no response came. Their silence was unsettling. Its either they were killed or on their way back to the capital and couldn’t communicate. But what was more unsettling was the crown prince’s popularity amongst the people and ministers. Each day in court they sang his praises. Ministers were flattering him and offering their support to him. Even those under the queen dowager were starting to waver. The minister of revenue who once smiled at me during banquets now eagerly showered Julian with praise after each court session.Nobles, even those who were neutral before now address him as the future kind. Where did he get the audacity to grow without me by his side? If thing went on like that, I would never be the crown princess. Just as I was thinking of vi

HELENA The alley was narrow and dirty. I could hear running footsteps behind us and he was not far. My chest burned as I had not recovered from the last run I did. I could see we were coming to the end of the alley. My eyes darted around as we ran looking for an opening to go back to the street. As if we were of the same mind, when an opening appeared leading to the street we ran through it. Soon we were back on the busy street. “Hold on.” we ducked behind a stall, the man kept looking around. soon the man who was chasing us appeared. He looked around on the street but saw no sign of us. I was holding my breath with my hand covering my mouth, afraid of even breathing too loud. Only a minute passed before the man ran down the street. “The streets are not safe anymore.” I whispered to the man next to me. “Young lady are you in trouble?” asked the owner of the stall. We were focused on not being discovered that we completely forgot about the owner. He could have given us away to the
