"Marriage?!" Arya exclaimed. The cup she was admiring was long forgotten as it fell on the floor.
Thankfully, it fell on the carpet and didn't break.
"You have to be kidding…" She whispered to herself.
Her knees suddenly felt extremely heavy, if not for her mother noticing her and supporting her body, she would've been sprawled on the floor.
"Exactly, it's April Fool's day, it must be a joke. Don't worry…" Arya's mother tried to comfort her daughter but it seemed like she was trying to comfort herself.
Both of them were a pathetic sight.
"Fortunately, I'm not joking." Lillian stared at the both of them before she turned to the butler behind her.
"Quickly, go and call Ryker for me." Lillian ordered the butler.
"Yes…"
"What do you mean you're not joking?! How can I get married just for breaking a dumb vase?! It wasn't even my fault!" Arya finally lost her cool. Her whole body was trembling, her breath was uneven as she yelled at Lillian who was surprisingly calm.
Her eyes were already turning red and her vision was blurry due to the tears.
"Arya! Calm down!" Her mother screamed.
"How am I supposed to do that?!" Arya screamed back at her mother, instantly regretting it as her cheek started to sting.
Her mother had slapped her.
"Sorry…" Arya whispered a small apology before taking a sit back on her seat.
"Good, now that you're calm, you can continue to wait until my son gets here. He'll explain everything to you." Lillian said as she got up and headed out of the room.
Once Lillian left the room, the room was silent again. Arya was seated in her seat, her leg bouncing up and down as she bit her nails, a prominent handprint on her cheek. Arya's mother, on the other hand, was seated calmly. It looked like she wasn't even bothered.
Arya's mother sighed after some time before turning towards her daughter.
"You have to understand, Arya…"
"Understand what?" Arya mocked, still bitter after the slap.
"Don't be like this, Arya! Can't you see that this is an opportunity?!" Her mother got up from her chair preparing to scold her but was stopped by the opening of the door.
A figure walked in calmly and took a seat in front of them.
"Y-You?!" Arya yelled out in utter shock.
"Hmmn." Was the only reply Arya got from the man sitting in front of her.
The man had curly black hair that was slicked back in a low man-bun and his beautiful deep blue eyes seem to naturally draw people in. He wore what seemed to be a very expensive black suit along with a pair of golden cuff links to match.
Although a bit dazed by his handsome appearance, Arya didn't give in.
"What do you mean 'hmmn'? What are you even doing here?" Arya still unaware, glared at the man seated on the couch.
"Arya-!"
"What do you mean, Arya? I'm here to discuss our contract, didn't my mother tell you?"
It was at that moment that Arya finally realized who she was talking to, the same person who had caused her to break the vase is not only the second son of the Rivera family but also the man proposing the marriage contract.
"Oh…" Arya was stunned speechless.
Why does she always keep messing up?
"You guys should excuse us." Ryker ordered coldly, his eyes never leaving Arya.
Panicked, the butler and her mother left the room. Although her mother didn't forget to whisper a quick 'behave' before she left.
The both of them sat in tense silence, neither of them speaking. Arya liked it that way. She wasn't in the right state of mind to deal with any of this. She didn't have the ability to pay the debt but she also didn't want to get married, what was she going to do?
How would her boyfriend react?
Or her father?
Similar thoughts were running all over Arya's mind. She looked calm on the outside, keeping her cool as she maintained eye contact with Ryker, but her mind was anything but calm.
"I don't see why you don't want to accept, it's a wonderful offer." Ryker handed her a small slip of paper.
"I made it simpler so you could understand." Ryker leaned into the chair and closed his eyes as he said that.
Arya wasn't sure if that was meant to be an insult.
"There has to be another way, I have a boyfriend and I don't even know you." Arya stated. Shocking even herself at how calm she was.
"If you accept; money, power, status, everything you could never have would be yours." Ryker persuaded.
"..."
Arya clenched her fist tighter. He has to be insulting her.
"If you had bothered to read the paper that I had given you, you would know that upon marrying me, half of my wealth is yours, along with the status and power of being in the Rivera family." Ryker further explained.
"If I accept, I can give my family a better life, and also, I won't be in debt anymore?" Arya asked, her voice trembling.
"Of course, I even came here personally, why would I lie?" Ryker responded in the same monotone voice he had been using since their conversation started.
"I need some time to think about it, thank you…" Arya gave a slight bow and dashed out of the room, forgetting the contract paper on the floor. Ryker's eyes followed her until the door slammed shut.
The previously heavy atmosphere got even heavier as soon as she left the room. Ryker stood up and grabbed the contract from the floor, placing it on the table. Ryker, after a while, left the room.
After a few twists and turns, he finally made it to his destination.
His mother's room.
"Mum…" He called out to her once he had opened the door.
"Ryker, what did she say?" His mother asked him, her focus never leaving the mirror that she was staring at.
"She said that she needed some time."
His mother sighed, her gaze still on the mirror.
"I don't even understand why you picked her of all people to get married to. Having her on our family tree is a stain to our reputation, Ryker, and you know that."
Ryker didn't respond to what his mother had said, making the room fall into an uncomfortable silence.
"It's because I-"
"Don't you dare lie to me, Ryker." His mother's dull and cold voice which would normally send shivers down a normal person's spine did not affect him as he was used to it.
"What if I said I married her just to spite you?"
Chapter 3 "Spite me?" She finally turned to look at him. Her eyes were anything but pleasant. "Ryker, don't be stupid. How could you even joke about such a thing? Spite me -she huffed-, Ryker, are you a fool?" She asked him, not expecting an answer. "I'm going to inherit the family business soon." He tried to change the topic. "Don't change the topic and didn't you say that she didn't give you a definite answer?" His mother asked as she sighed. She was clearly not in the mood, Lillian could feel herself getting older every time she talked to her son. "She would obviously agree, she graduated top of her class in high school, she's a smart girl." He said as he headed for the door. "I'll be leaving now, goodbye." Ryker said his goodbyes as he shut the door on his way out, leaving his mother all alone to ponder about the decision of her second son. To say she was disappointed was an understatement, but what could she do? +++++++ At the end of a dilapidated neighborhood was a s
"How could you do this to me?!" Arya whispered loudly at her parents as she aggressively wiped her tears with her sleeves. "Don't be so hot-blooded, Arya." Her mother, extremely tired of her attitude, told her. "What?... You bring me to the last place I would ever want to be and you're telling me not to be so 'hot-blooded'?" Arya scoffed and rolled her eyes. This was ridiculous. Arya turned around and tried to leave but was dragged back gently by her father. "Yaya, listen to us, this is an opportunity. Do you want to continue to suffer like this all your life? Think about us, your parents…" Her father pleaded with her. "...Alright." she sighed. "I'll go.", Arya said after some time, bringing a smile to her parent's faces. The three of them shared a short hug before finally entering the inside of the building. The inside was even better than the outside. With clean and shiny marble floors, pure leather couches, a clean receptionist desk, and a wonderful chandelier hanging from
Sprawled on her bed was Arya who was so lost in the deep abyss of her thoughts, she didn't hear the loud car horn coming from outside her room window. It was when her mother, Emilly Pierce, knocked on her door, that she was snapped out of it. It was then that she realized what today was. Quickly opening her room door she rushed into the bathroom. It didn't take her long to have a quick shower and do her hair, the only problem was finding an outfit. She didn't know who Ryker had sent to help her with shopping. Realizing that she didn't have enough time she just decided to wear the best casual outfit she had. It was a skin-fitting white crop top and a simple palazzo with a pair of casual sneakers. Grabbing her bag, Arya sprinted outside. "You don't want something to eat?!" Her mother yelled after her. "Don't worry!" Arya yelled back. Stepping outside, Arya was stunned once again by seeing the car parked in front of her house. She still wasn't used to everything that was going o
"Allison, why is it now that you're telling me this?" Ryker asked calmly as his finger rhythmically tapped the arm of the couch he was seated on. To his right was his mother who had a nasty sneer on her face as she played with the ring on her finger while on his left, was his twin sister, Allison, who wished she could crawl into a hole. All three of them were in Ryker's study room in his house."I knew that girl was trouble... this is what happens when you bring a poor person into our family..." His mother, Lillian hissed as she leaned deeper into the couch. Ryker on the other hand was angry, not because his soon-to-be wife had caused him some trouble but because of how long his sister waited to inform him of such a matter. Sadly, he couldn't show his anger, he couldn't give his mother the satisfaction of seeing him upset.Even though the room wasn't used regularly, it was still spotless and neat. Like most of the other rooms in the Rivera family’s mansion, this room also had an ear
“What..?” Mr. L, for the first time since coming inside their small house, finally showed such a fragile expression; confusion. At first he-all of them- thought that they had heard wrong but when they saw the blank expression on her face, they knew she wasn’t joking.“A-are you-“ “I see… at least Mr. Rivers’s fiancée had accepted my apology on behalf of my wife.”Mr. L smoothly said as if his previous action of pinching the bodyguard to interrupt him wasn't seen by the family. To be so shameless must be a gift.“Of course, it was our pleasure hosting you...” Arya spoke as calmly and fluently as she could muster. She hoped that all the high-class novels she had read in the city library won't fail her.“Then I can leave in peace... Goodbye.” And in less than a minute, the two of them had left their house.“And also, your home truly is lovely...” Mr. L commented as the car drove off.The outside of the house wasn't as neat as the inside. Overgrown weeds and trash were scattered careless
Twenty minutes. Arya had been in the car for twenty minutes with Allison and she couldn't tell which part of her attitude was worse.Thankfully, God decided to end her sufferings and they arrived at Ryker’s house.Contrary to Arya’s expectations, the house wasn't as spacious as their main house. It was still bigger and better than the ones they arranged for her parents.Walking inside, Arya was stunned once more. Even though the room consisted of three main colors; black, white, and grey, it still found a way to look lively yet sophisticated. On the walls were beautiful posters and art pieces and the furniture was just exquisite.“I've already placed the clothes I bought at the store in your bedroom,” Allison said.Arya smiled in approval and nodded her head.“Ok. Thank you.” Arya thanked Allison once again.Even if the woman was rude and arrogant, she still had to be polite. After all, Allison would be her future sister-in-law; if everything goes according to plan.“Yeah...whatever.
“...Mr. Daniels..?”Arya’s cracked voice was the only sound that was heard in the silence of the house, the speaker had long been turned off.How had she not noticed? She thought as she stared at one of the old workers from the Rivera family’s main house. She wondered what he was doing here. Had Ryker sent him here?“Arya...well I suppose I would be calling you Mrs. Arya now.” Mr. Daniels said with a slight smile making Arya turn scarlet with embarrassment.“You don't have to do that, just continue calling me Arya...please.” Arya smiled back at him. She was happy someone she knew would be staying with her in the mansion.“Mr. Rivera informed me that you haven't eaten breakfast yet so I spent some time preparing a suitable meal for you. When I came to call you for breakfast...I met you in such a situation....” Mr. Daniels explained as he escorted her down the stairs. When she heard the name of the man who had locked her in the room, she couldn't contain the need to sneer outwardly in di
“What..?” Arya asked with a deep look in her eyes.Did he seriously call her here just to mock her? Did he look down on her that much? He couldn't even apologize for locking her in a room! “I said; your qualifications are too low for you to get the job that you want... Should I repeat myself?” Ryker said with a snort. An action she thought he was incapable of.“I heard you the first time, is that seriously what you called me here for?” She huffed and crossed her arms as she glared daggers at his figure.“Of course not, don't be so childish and sit properly.” He ordered calmly, successfully ignoring the glares she was sending his way.Against her will, she still decided to obey him. “So, you'll be working for me instead, it's also a way for me to monitor you,” Ryker stated that it was the most obvious thing in the world.“...what?” Arya questioned, she didn't understand his train of thought. The reason she never expected him to give her a job in his company, apart from the fact that
