~ Avelyn ~

I remained frozen as a ripple moved through the crowd, and I could feel the weight of a hundred pairs of eyes pressing down on me, all eager to witness the moment this “mother” arrived. I clenched my fists, forcing the numbness I’d practiced all morning to stay in place.

The woman approached, slow and deliberate. Not frail in the slightest, there was a sharpness in her step, the kind that made every inch of the room instinctively acknowledge her authority.

Her gown was understated but terrifyingly elegant, a soft gray with faint silver threads catching the light just enough to demand attention. No jewelry, no gaudy embellishments because frankly speaking, she didn’t need them. The room itself seemed to shift as she walked, and I could feel every whispered conversation dulling as the focus moved to her. Her eyes, pale gray and calculating, locked on Xander, and I instinctively held my breath and stood stiff enough to be present but invisible.

~ Avelyn ~The bathroom was quieter than the rest of the world. Not peaceful, just muted. There was a difference. I stood at the sink longer than necessary, palms braced against cold marble, staring at my reflection like it might tell me something useful if I stared hard enough. My lipstick was still intact. My hair hadn’t moved. I looked composed in the way people assume means you’re fine.I wasn’t.I rinsed my hands, even though they weren’t dirty, and took a breath that didn’t quite reach my lungs. Staying in here forever wasn’t an option. People would notice. People always noticed the wrong things. So I left. The moment I stepped back into the ballroom, sound slammed into me, music, laughter, clinking glasses, conversations layered on top of conversations. The gala had not slowed in my absence. If anything, it felt louder and hungrier. My first instinct was to look for him.Xander.He wasn’t where I’d left him. My eyes swept the room again, slower this time. Dominic wasn’t there

    — Xander —The silence stretched long enough to become deliberate.I broke it.“Is Albania lacking women?”My voice was even, calmer than the storm unleashed. The kind of calm men learned to fear too late.A few of the Dons shifted in their seats. Someone’s translator hesitated, eyes flicking up before forcing the words out anyway. Any sensible man would have smelled the danger in my tone, felt the temperature drop in the room and backed away slowly.Gjarpri was not sensible. He smiled.“But she isn’t just any woman,” he said, spreading his hands as if explaining something obvious. “She is yours. And it has always been my wish to drink from the same cup as you.”For a split second, the room forgot how to breathe.I saw it then, the Roman Capo’s hand shooting out, gripping Kyle’s fist before it could move. Kyle’s jaw was clenched so tightly I thought his teeth might crack. Veins stood out on his temple, his neck. Rage, barely contained. And that was when something ugly curled in my che

    — Xander —The moment she left my side, the room exhaled, not from relief but in anticipation. It was subtle, the way shoulders loosened, the way conversations shifted half a degree louder, the way eyes stopped pretending not to track me. The gala resumed its rhythm, but the tempo changed. People always thought my attention was the storm. They never noticed what followed in its wake.Dominic appeared at my shoulder like gravity pulling him into place. He didn’t touch me. He never did. That was intentional. Men who touched me forgot their place too easily. He leaned in just enough that his words were swallowed by the music and chandeliers.“The organizers are asking for confirmation,” he murmured. “Is the engagement being announced tonight?”I didn’t look at him.Below us, champagne flowed. Silk skimmed marble. Laughter bloomed too fast and died too quickly. It was all familiar. A thousand galas blurred into one after a while. Different cities. Same hunger.“Do I look like a man willin

~ Avelyn ~I came downstairs. And there he was.Xander stood at the foot of the staircase like he’d been placed there deliberately, one hand in his pocket, jacket immaculate, expression unreadable in that calm, predatory way that always made me feel like I’d stepped into something already decided. He looked up the second my heel touched the last step, his gaze sweeping over me with open ownership. Not admiration.Assessment.His mouth curved slightly, just enough to be dangerous.“Sei mia,” he murmured in Italian as he reached for my hand. Before I could react, he lifted my fingers and pressed his lips to my knuckles slowly, his actions were deliberate, for anyone watching to understand exactly what it meant. Then, still holding my hand, he added something else in the same language, his voice low and smooth.“La stella della serata.”I didn’t understand a word of it.And honestly, I didn’t care.I’d already decided tonight wasn’t for understanding. It was for endurance. For complianc

  • Switched at the Mafia Auction   Chapter 143: Where do I belong

~ Avelyn ~I woke up to voices. Not loud or panicked, just… present. The kind of voices that didn’t belong to dreams or memories, which meant I was being summoned into consciousness against my will.My eyes opened, one eye catching a glimpse of white curtains. Sunlight already spilling through them like it had somewhere important to be. Of course it did. Everything in this house moved on schedule except me.A soft knock followed, then the door opened before I answered.“Good morning, miss.”I closed my eye again, because this had to be a dream. It wasn’t morning. It was barely morning-adjacent. And I had nowhere to be, nothing to do. No obligations other than existing quietly in a place I didn’t ask to be.“I’m sleeping,” I muttered into the pillow.“We’ve prepared breakfast.”That didn’t help their case. I sighed, rolled onto my back, and stared at the ceiling for a moment longer than necessary. The truth was, I hadn’t slept well anyway. My body was tired, but my mind had been doing
