Chapter 8- Myra

I tugged on a plain white dress that stopped at my ankles and paired it with some sneakers. I walked past Remmi's bed as I made my way to the communal bathroom on the second floor. I have been at Saint View for a bit over a week and all I can say is that I've never been to anywhere as extravagant as this.

The classes are all about the history of the five origins of Malsophor, as well as the war that caused its separation. The war is the most intriguing in my opinion. I have this book which is a copy of a journal kept by one of the soldiers who fought in this war. It narrates how it started and who ended it.

'Lamia is right at our borders and we're outnumbered two to four. It is not a promising battle, sadly, so I can't promise my return to you, my love. I hope you understand just how much this pains me to say, but this is a battle that I mustn't run from. My only wish is that you find this journal so that you may know of my feelings for you, even if you are already aware. A reminder is never a bad thing.

I must go now. The general is requesting those of the front line so I leave you with this last, unusually short, entry.'

This wasn't his last, because on the next page he speaks of a goddess who went by the name Sophane.

"White aura, huh? What are you?" Hayley's nose turned up in disgust as she looked down at me through her thick lashes.

I stood beside my locker, a little confused about how she managed to sneak up behind me without me noticing. I must have been really deep in thought.

"I don't know, still trying to figure that out myself," I replied with a tight smile.

I moved to walk around her but she slid quickly to the side, blocking my path with a tilt of her head.

"So you're... special?" The last word held so much hatred if I could bottle it up I'd need a water tank to contain it.

"No, I'm just not from here."

"Mhmm, of course, you are." She straightened her skin-tight outfit which looked to be hand-picked from the movie clueless.

"Listen well, you dumb bitch. I have worked too hard and done too many horrible things to get where I am right now. If you think you can take that away by just simply existing then you have another thing coming." She narrowed her eyes at me.

I couldn't hide the smirk that grew my face, "It sounds to me like my presence threatens you."

"More like annoys the shit out of me."

I rolled my eyes, "I'm not here to cause any trouble, alright. I've been here long enough to know that I don't like any of you. So, do us both a favor just stay out of my way and I'll stay out of yours."

"That can't happen when you're trying to take everything away from me. My title, my reputation, and my boyfriend. And you've barely been here for two weeks!" She shrieked, eyes glowing with frustration.

She huffed as she regained her composure, lowering her voice so that the listening crowd doesn't hear our conversation.

"Look, I have to get to class. So if you'll just..." I pushed her to the side to which she hissed in response.

Her eyes glowed a dark shade of red and her canines doubled in size. I watched as she took threatening steps towards me with a murderous expression on her face.

Her face contorted into a hideous image, reminding me a lot of my sleep paralysis demon.

I stared into her blood-red orbs which made her stumble slightly. She was stopped in her actions as she stared back at me mindlessly. My thoughts were clouded with images of the blood-thirsty vampires described by the filmmakers in my world.

I urged my hands to stop shaking as I kept my eyes trained on her, watching as her features reverted back to their original state as she back away slowly. She shook her head as if shaking off whatever trance halted her action before she huffed as she sashayed away, glaring at those who stared at her as she made her way down the hallway.

I released a breath of air as I turned to walk in the opposite direction she had, knowing that my first class is not with her. I felt a bit lightheaded, unsure of what had just happened.

What stopped her from coming at me?

I've never been threatened like that before, most people steering clear of me because of my parent's position. So I can't say that she was intimidated by me. Maybe this has something to do with the white aura.

A surge of pain rushed through my head, causing me to clench my teeth as I resisted the feeling. I pushed my way into the nearest bathroom, finding it empty of any life forms. I leaned against the stall door across from the wall-length bathroom mirror as I rubbed my temples, attempting to ease the pain.

That's when it suddenly stopped.

"You don't look too good," came a soft voice.

I looked to the door, finding no one had entered the room. Confusion overtook my features as I turned my attention back to the mirror, only to find a different person staring back at me. My reflection seeming to be replaced with another.

"Are you mute?"

I pushed myself off of the wall, gazing into the mirror at what I'd say is the most beautiful person I'd ever met. Around her were air bubbles floating upwards, suggesting that she may be underwater. She wore a crown made of colorful seagrass which rested on her head, her chestnut brown hair covering her exposed chest.

"N-No, I'm sorry. H-How are you in..." I was at a loss for words.

"How am I in a mirror? This is how we communicate in my realm," she thought about it before she giggled, "Which, I suppose, is your realm as well." She smiled sweetly turning her head in both directions as if looking out for someone.

"What realm would that be?" I asked.

"The S-"

"Lydia!" Came a loud, deep voice. One full of anger and frustration.

"Oh shit! I thought I had a minute longer but I suppose I should cut this short."

"You're in grave danger. The magic you house is one lost to the fragments of Malsophor, one they will all fear. Rightfully so." She explained.

"You must learn to use your power before they figure out what you are, or they'll have you executed. They won't challenge you if you've mastered the gift, but as of right now, while your weak, they won't hesitate to have you beheaded."

"Lydia!" The voice sounded to be closer, more urgent.

"Wait, I don't know what this gift is! How am I supposed to control something I don't understand, " My fingers turned pale as I gripped the ceramic sink in front of me.

"Find a body of water. You'll know what to do then. Please, hurry." A puff of blue smoke built around the mirror, clearing after a couple of seconds to reveal my own reflection.

I blinked a few times, feeling slightly dazed from the event that had transpired. There are more like me, a realm that's not of Malsophor.

A lost civilization separated from the ones I've been made aware of.

People like me.

How am meant to go to class with this newfound information?

I shook my head, heeding the woman's words to look for a body of water that will tell me what I am. For the past two weeks, I'd been stared at by the students here, some wondering who I am and some wondering just what I might be. It's like being under a spotlight constantly which is not unfamiliar to me, but that doesn't mean I'm comfortable with it.

I stumbled out of the bathroom and into the hands of the guy I've been hanging out a lot with as of recent.

"Raver," my voice sounded a little breathy even to my own ears.

He smiled down at me as he helped me to regain my balance. "I didn't know you were this enthusiastic about classes. Where are you off to in such a hurry?"

I giggled at the scenario of me rushing to get to any class, be it one that teaches that of mystical beings or algebraic equations.

"I met someone in the bathroom," he looked at me weirdly to which I brushed off, "She told me how I could find out what I am. I need a body of water but I must do it quickly before the teachers realize it first or I'll be in danger."

I looked into his eyes as he processed the information, all the while staring back at me. He nodded his head absentmindedly before grabbing hold of my hand and pulling me in the direction of the school dorms.

"Where are we going?" I asked but it fell on deaf ears.

He leads us through some pine trees as we maneuvered around exposed roots and fallen pine. Not a word was uttered as we made our way through the thicket. When we emerged, I found myself in a field of tulips, ranging in color and size, each with its own individual beauty.

I stared in awe as they swayed in the breeze, wishing I could be as carefree as they appear. I took a deep breath and as the rest of the world faded, a small pond came into view.

"How did you find out about this place?" I whispered.

"Who do you think planted all these tulips?" He smiled as he took my hand, pulling me in the direction of the pond.

He sat on the dock standing over one edge of the pond with me settling beside him. He took in a deep breath as he stared off into the distance before he began to speak.

"I've done some horrible things that few outside of Lykanthop has heard about. My father made sure that word never got out about it. But that's the only reason I don't hang around the other Lykans, they're all afraid of me."

"I don't do anything to change their mind about me, I feel like it's better this way. The more isolated I am from the others the more menacing I would appear, which would be easier for people to listen to me if they are afraid of going against my word.

"Being feared is different than being respected, I know that. But how can people respect the son of a clown? A man who cares not for the people of his kingdom, but to satisfy his own needs and his needs alone." His features hardened as he spoke.

"That's why when I finally realized what he's been doing, how he treats his subjects, I decided that I would never be like him. I will not put my life over the lives of many others. I can't believe he's this way."

"But he wasn't always like this, he was a good king, a good father, and a husband. My mother made sure of that. She was the heart of Lykan, adored by all and a kind soul. She brought me here to half caste to meet her sister, that's how we found this clearing and planted all of these flowers. They were her favorite."

I scooted closer to him and rested my head on his shoulder, allowing my feet to wade in the cold water below them. I felt the muscles in his shoulders relax as he placed his head on mine, both of us basking in the serenity of the moment.

"But then she died."

My breath caught in my throat at that. I turned my eyes to him to see his eyes trained on the trees across the lake. After a moment passed, it didn't seem like he wanted to elaborate, and as curious as I might be, I don't want to force him into talking about anything he didn't want to.

I repositioned my head on his shoulder as I closed my eyes humming a small tune. A song I made when I was little to keep myself occupied whenever I was forced to go on tv with my parents. It took my mind off the fact that hundreds of people were watching me, judging me.

I remained like this for a few silent seconds more until Raver interrupted the silence.

"Holy shit..."

My eyes opened as I stared at the scene before me. The water around my feet cleared, not a single drop touching my skin as it rose towards us, forming a wall of some sort and blocking the morning sun.

I slowly rose to my feet as the water followed my movement, fully shielding my body.

"Raver? What's happening?" I felt my heart rate quicken as my hands began to shake slightly.

"I think you're doing that, how are you doing that?" He stared at the water in wonder.

"I don't know! This has never happened before. How do I stop it?"

Just then an arrow came flying at a remarkable speed towards me, getting caught in the wall of water barely missing the tip of my nose before disintegration. The birds of the surrounding trees flew out of their homes as their chirping ceased, taking with them the calmness of the atmosphere and leaving behind a tense feeling to swirl in the breeze.

My mouth opened and closed like a fish before my attention was brought to the shouting voice coming from the shadows of the woods.

"Hold your fire! She knows and there's no telling what she could do! Move with caution!" A voice sounding a lot like my fae history teacher, Mr. Walding said before figures started emerging from the shadows.

Before I knew it we were completely surrounded, with a growling Raver whose eyes were beginning to turn change color.

"What is this? You're trespassing on private property." He pushed me behind him as the wall fell back to the pond.

One of the professors, a fae woman called Mrs. Singor, was the one to speak up."She's deadly, Raver. We need to detain her immediately before someone gets hurt."

"What harm can she bring? All she can do is manipulate water, lots of faes can manipulate the elements."

She raised her weapon and pointed it towards me, "She's no fae."

Without thinking, I grabbed Raver's hand before jumping into the pool behind us, narrowly missing the arrow that flew above our forms. Once we were fully submerged in the water, I opened my eyes to see a panicked Raver staring back at me with frantic eyes.

I stared back at him with a confused expression as his face started to turn purple. I racked my brain for a solution when an idea came to mind, I closed my eyes as I reenacted what happened with the water moments before. When I reopened them, however, I found him sinking further to the pond's bed as his features turned pale.

That was when I realized, he can't swim.
