Nicole leaned back in her chair slightly, her eyes narrowing as she glanced toward Liam’s table.

“Adrian…” she said quietly, almost hesitant. “Who’s the girl with Liam?”

I followed her gaze and spotted Liam, casually talking with a woman who moved with a confidence that suggested she belonged in this circle.

Her laugh was light, practiced, flirtatious, and it made me frown slightly.

“That’s Anna,” I replied carefully, keeping my tone neutral. “She’s… his ex. They’re doing business together.”

Adrian’s eyes shifted past my shoulder. Slowly, I turned. Ethan stood by the half-open door. One hand rested casually on the doorframe, his expression unreadable, though the faint lift of his eyebrow suggested he had seen more than enough. My face was drained of color. “Oh—” I immediately stepped back from Adrian, creating distance that hadn’t existed a moment ago. My heart was pounding again, but for an entirely different reason. Ethan pushed the door open a little wider and stepped inside. “Well,” he said dryly, glancing between us. “I see Adrian is recovering faster than the doctors predicted.” I felt heat rush to my cheeks. “That’s not— we weren’t—” My attempt at explaining completely fell apart halfway through. Adrian, however, looked far less bothered. He leaned back slightly against the pillows, his gaze steady. “You should knock,” Adrian interrupted calmly. Ethan let out a quiet chuckle. “The door was open.” I suddenly wished that the floor would open and swal

I didn’t slow down until the corridor behind me fell completely silent. My chest rose and fell quickly, anger and hurt still twisting inside me. I stopped near a window at the end of the hallway, pressing my palm against my forehead as I tried to steady myself. “Why does everything have to be so complicated…” I muttered under my breath. The argument with Liam replayed in my mind, every word sharper the second time around. His frustration, his excuses… the way he kept turning things back to me, they were all annoying. The moment I noticed my eyes were red, l wiped quickly at the corner of my eye before anyone could see. But another thought soon replaced the argument. Adrian… My heart skipped slightly. He was still in the hospital room… injured… and I had walked out in the middle of everything. I let out a slow breath before pushing myself away from the wall. “Great,” I murmured to myself. “Now I’ve left both of them.” I turned and began walking back down the corridor. T

The moment Marianna stepped closer, her carefully controlled smile carried a sharp edge. “I just don’t understand, Adrian,” she said, voice dripping with false concern. “Nicole, she could have checked on her own boyfriend tonight, after all that happened. Yet she chose to stay here… by your side.” I stiffened slightly. My eyes widened, the accusation stinging. I opened my mouth to speak, but Marianna’s gaze was piercing, almost daring me to respond. Adrian’s jaw clenched, his eyes narrowing in warning. “Mother,” he said slowly, his voice firm, low enough to rattle, “that’s none of your business.” Marianna tilted her head, feigning surprise. “None of my business? Are you saying that her loyalty to you, her concern, is alright?” “She made her choice,” Adrian said, leaning forward slightly, his voice rising with anger. “And that choice doesn’t need your approval. Nicole stayed here because I needed her, not because of anything else. Understand that.” I felt a wave of relief at

Liam's POV The moment the car doors shut, I turned to her.“Why?” My voice was low, tight with barely contained anger. “Why did you pull me out of there?”My mother didn’t look at me immediately. She stared straight ahead as the driver merged into traffic, her fingers clasped together in her lap far too neatly.“Liam,” she said calmly, “you were in no condition to stay.”“That’s not an answer.”Her jaw tightened.“I was fine,” I continued. “I needed to be there. With Nicole. With—” I stopped myself, my chest rising sharply. “With everything that happened.”She finally turned to me then. “And what exactly would you have done?”“I would have stayed,” I snapped. “Which is more than I can say for what you forced me to do.”Silence filled the car, thick and suffocating. Then the question that had been clawing at my mind spilled out.“And another thing,” I said, leaning closer. “How did we leave so easily?”She stiffened.“There were gunshots everywhere.” My eyes searched her face. “Yet yo

Nicole's POV Hospitals have a smell that never leaves you.I sat beside Adrian’s bed, my fingers wrapped tightly around his, afraid that if I let go, even for a second, something irreversible would happen. Machines beeped softly around us.Adrian lay there, pale but breathing.Thankfully he was alive.I watched his chest rise and fall, counting each breath. My mind couldn't stop replaying it, the gunshot, the chaos. The way he didn’t hesitate, not even a fraction of a second before stepping in front of me.One moment, he was talking. The next, his body slammed into mine, his arms wrapping around me as the sound exploded through the room. I remember shouting his name. I remember the warmth of blood. I remember screaming, even though I didn’t recognize my own voice.I slowly shook my head.Everyone thought I was shaken because of the attack. Because of Adrian.Yes, I was but no one knew the real reason my hands wouldn’t stop trembling.I had seen him, Frank.Even in the chaos, even w

“We need to leave now.” Ethan informed us.“How are we going to do that? Adrian is badly injured.” Nicole voiced out in concern.“We don't have a choice.” Ethan said flatly. It suddenly dawned on her. “What about Zara? I’m sorry but I can't leave her behind.” She shook her head in panic.“She's safe, my men will bring her. The most important thing is that we need to leave now, so hold you small talk for later.” Ethan sounded a bit annoyed.I wanted to chip in a few words but I couldn't.“We will hold him from both sides gently, while my men will direct us safely out of here.” Ethan explained briefly to Nicole.I was barely aware of the world around me, every nerve screamed from the pain in my side, but I forced myself to move as they both held me. Both of them pulled me up, guiding me along as we navigated through the chaos. Nicole was right beside me, gripping my arm tightly, her face pale but determined.Zara had somehow ended up with us, her usual bravado replaced with wide eyes
