Lisa POV

“Should we even trust him?” my mom asked. Her eyes never left the window, tracking the car as it rolled toward the porch.

“Mom, now you're being paranoid.”

“I should be. For all we know, he could be part of it. He presents himself as honest, but that is exactly how they get close.”

Her words left an oily feeling in my stomach.

“We can't just throw accusations at everyone. We need to be sure. I have to believe he’s trying to help.”

“I didn’t say he was one of them.”

“You’re thinking it.

Lisa POV“Should we even trust him?” my mom asked. Her eyes never left the window, tracking the car as it rolled toward the porch.“Mom, now you're being paranoid.”“I should be. For all we know, he could be part of it. He presents himself as honest, but that is exactly how they get close.”Her words left an oily feeling in my stomach.“We can't just throw accusations at everyone. We need to be sure. I have to believe he’s trying to help.”“I didn’t say he was one of them.”“You’re thinking it.”She didn’t answer. She pulled the curtain back a little further.“He wouldn’t be able to fool Cameron,” I said, “and definitely not Franklin.” The words sat between us. I heard the tremor of doubt in my own voice and hated how weak it sounded.Mom’s face fell into a mask of quiet sadness. “Cameron didn’t see through Evangeline either.”A knock at the door made her give me a pointed look to behave, then she headed for the foyer. The baby shifted low in my belly. It was like he was reading the s

Lisa POVThe surrogacy contract lay sprawled across the duvet. I hadn't left this bed since last night. My eyes burned, dry from a total lack of sleep. Alpha Kieran’s words from yesterday played on a loop in my head.I flipped through the pages, searching the fine print as if a secret exit would appear if I stared long enough. My mind raced through every disaster scenario. Every clause and bold line shouted what I owed them. It told me what I couldn't do. It listed the punishments if I failed. There wasn't a single word about what they owed me. Not a sentence explaining what happened if they failed me.I had signed this four months ago. Desperation for money had blinded me; I hadn't even called a lawyer because the need to save my family was a fire at my heels.I forced myself to read the same paragraph for the third time. My eyes tracked the black ink across the white paper, but the meaning slid right off my brain. I slammed the file shut. Alpha Kieran’s voice echoed in the quiet.H

Cameron POVFranklin didn’t follow her right away. He lingered, shifting his weight and looking from me to Evangeline like he was weighing which fire to put out first.“Go after her,” I said.He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.“Go!” I barked. He gave a stiff nod and hurried out the door. The heavy silence that followed wasn't peaceful. It pressed against my eardrums from all sides. I hated it.I rubbed my palms over my face and turned away from the entrance. Evangeline stood a few feet away. I didn't need to look to know she was there; the air felt thick around her. When I finally turned, she was staring at me. Her cheeks were wet, stained with streaks of mascara.“You’re just going to let your sister assault me like that?” she asked. She hugged her arms across her chest. “You heard everything she said. As if the lies weren't enough, she actually hit me.”“You provoked her.”Her jaw dropped. She looked back at me with a mix of shock and growing heat. “You think I dese

Cameron POVI did not believe Nadia and Franklin. It was more than just their bad acting; they were trying too hard to look relaxed. Franklin’s eyes darted away every time I looked for detail. Nadia kept her focus pinned on me, tracking my every move like she was weighing a prize. It felt rehearsed. My jaw tightened. I was not in the mood for games.“You weren’t answering your calls. I was worried,” Nadia said. She twisted her fingers together. “You left without saying anything.”“I didn’t realize I needed permission.”The room went still. The silence stretched until it felt heavy, confirming the itch in the back of my brain. They were hiding something. I sank into my chair and crossed my arms, letting my gaze drift from one to the other.“If something happened, say it. If nothing happened, stop wasting my time.”“Nothing happened,” Franklin said. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other.“Then why are you here?”“To pick you up,” Nadia said.I stared into her eyes, searching

Lisa POV“Lisa, please. This is not something you need to be part of.”The urge to scream climbed up my throat.“You’re already talking about me. So I am part of it.”My chest tightened, and I could hear the thud of my blood in my ears. Alpha Kieran looked at my mom, then back at me, his mouth opening and closing as if the words were stuck in his throat.I stared at them across the small gap. Alpha Kieran's eyes stayed on my mother, waiting for a nod that did not come. "Mom, let him talk," I snapped. "If this is about me, you have no right to hide it.""This is not your burden," my mom said. Her hands shook as she smoothed her skirt. "You are a surrogate. That is your only role. You do not need to drown in the mess of Cameron’s life."The words "just a surrogate" stung like a slap, but I kept my eyes locked on Kieran.“I’m not just a surrogate, mom. If something is wrong, it affects me too. I deserve the truth."Kieran gave a slow nod. "You do. But this truth is…dark." He hesitated

Lisa POV"What is going on?" I leaned toward my mother as I looked for an answer."Your guess is as good as mine," she said. Alpha Kieran stood with Nadia, but his eyes stayed locked on my mother, a smile stretching across his face. "We should excuse them to talk," my mom whispered. She didn't look at me; her eyes remained fixed on Alpha Kieran.I shifted my gaze to Nadia. She usually wore clothes like a shield of high fashion, every hair a perfect coil. Today, the makeup was gone. Her outfit was simple. She gave me a nod, her eyes dropping to the curve of my stomach before she turned back to Cameron."Help me with lunch," my mom said to me.In the kitchen, the air felt thick. I gripped a carrot under the running water, rubbing the skin until it squeaked. Nearby, my mom’s knife clicked against the cutting board, but it kept stopping. She would tiptoe toward the doorway to catch a sound from the other room, only to turn back and give me a shake of her head. No clues. But Franklin’

Franklin POVThe ceiling fan in the doctor’s office hummed at a frequency that vibrated inside my skull. Dr. Aris rubbed the bridge of his nose, his skin sallow under the harsh light. He slid Lisa's results toward me. The paper felt heavy, the ink crisp and undeniable.“Will this affect the baby?” I

Lisa POV She’s awake. My mother’s voice was the first thing I heard when I woke up. It came from somewhere near the foot of the bed, low and steady, the way she spoke when she was trying to hold everything together. The doctor walked in. A stethoscope dangled around his neck and a thick file sat cl

Evangeline POVCameron slept in the chair beside my bed. His head rested against the high back with his neck bent at an angle that would ache later. One arm hung over the side and his fingers brushed the floor. I watched him with a smile. My lips curved up on their own while I studied the slow rise

Franklin raised the hospital bed, and the tube in my arm tugged when I shifted. The monitor around my stomach kept a steady rhythm, tracking the baby. I watched the screen, then turned my attention away.I didn’t like how steady that sound was. It felt too calm compared to everything happening insi
