Sequoia's POV
"Niylah! Wait up! Stop! Your Suprema commands you!"I ran after her, panting, but she was quick, dodging through the trees and soon she disappeared into the dark. The mokk wasn't bright enough to see where she went and instead it casted eerie shadows on everything that it's light touched. I stopped on a rock to rest. I knew she was around here somewhere, watching me, waiting for me to be off guard so that she could pounce on me, like she always did.I had a bright idea and immediately shifted into my wolf, my bright orange and red flames filled the clearing I was in with light. The shadows were pushed back andy light burnt bright into the night, rivaling that of the moon's.I heard a twig snap and I turned sharply around but there was no one. Suddenly I felt a presence but I was too slow to get out of the way. Niylah emerged from he hiding place and had pounced on me, pinning me to the ground. She too was in her wolf form. Her eyes were a deep blue, her white coat pattered with blue swirling markings, resembling the swirling waters of the Lunaria.I pushed her off gently and got up from the ground. I shifted back into my wolf form as did she and she was on the floor lauging."Alright, alright. You win. Don't get too ahead of yourself."I sat on a rock and looked up at the moon. I was troubled. Sephora's wolf still bothered me.Niylah came to sit beside me and we she nudged me in the shoulder. I smiled."Sister Artemisia taught you well. She never liked me. Always had a thing for you.""Don't think that. She just thinks your sloppy and a bad student."I rolled my eyes. Niylah could be unsavory sometimes."Thanks for putting it out ever so gently. You are a great friend, " I said sarcastically.Niylah giggled."I'm only joking. She's tough on everyone, even me. Don't let it beat you up.""I'm not worried about her."I continued to look up at the moon. It's glow was hypnotizing. Once it was full, it would mark five months till I became 18, till I became of age."I saw sister Sephora's wolf today."Niylah looked at me with wide eyes. The glee and curiosity was evident"What did it look like?â"I could sense the bubbling excitement in her voice."âMajestic? Grand? What element was it?""Plain."My voice was flat. Niylah looked at me stunned. Didn't she hear what I said?"Excuse me?"I sighed. I guess she didn't hear me."It was brown. Beautiful and majestic, yes, but plain. There was no element."I stood up and walked deep into the forest and I could hear Niylah walking beside me."She asked me to fight her but I couldn't. It didn't seem fair. I could have hurt her, burnt her.""You made the right choice sister.""I asked her what happened to her wolf and she said that she sacrificed it and she doesn't regret it."I stopped infront of a large red flower. The petals were closed tightly. I ran my finger in the tight petals and they flayed open, releasing it's beautiful scent."I suggest that you do not let Sephora's past bother you. She is wise. She knows why she did what she did. What you owe her now is to prepare for the rites of the Suprema. She is counting on you.""Wiser words have never been spoken."We turned around sharply and saw Mistress Kali standing behind us. She walked like a ghost. I wondered I her feet ever touched the ground. We fell to our kness but she raised us up gently."No need for that. We are all sisters. And yes Sequoia. My feet do touch the ground."I was speechless. She could read minds too. She smiled at me and patted my hair. She looked different. Still as elusive as always but there was no mist this time. She was in a different dress and was holding a basket. She walked past us and up to the flower in front of us."Ahhh, I see you have found the Forest Fire Flower. It's scent is wonderful and it's petals are good for fortune telling. I have been searching for it for a while now. Thank you, both of you."She picked the entire flower and stuffed it in her basket. She walked on and I decided to follow her. Niylah grabbed my arm and pulled me back but I was insistent. I wanted to see where Mistress Kali was going.I pulled free of her grasp and ran after Kali into the night. I could soon hear Niylah running behind me. Kali had only left us for a few moments yet she was so far ahead. Suddenly I stopped in my tracks and I stopped Niylah from bumping into me. Kali was infront and we were infront ofâI gaspedâ the Lunaria! The waters shimmered in the light of the moon and it's gentle rumbling could be heard. Kali turned to Niylah and I."I'm glad you two could join me."She pulled out the flower and took two petals and handed them to Niylah and I."Both of you should mark it with your element."I looked at my leaf and set it ablaze just a bit to scorch a corner while Niylah used the water to carve the edges of hers."Good. Now the both of you should drop it into the water. Together."I looked at Niylah confused but we both walked up to the stream and dropped it in. The water was rushing but the petals just sat there like nothing was happening."Now what?" I asked Kali. I was rather unimpressed at the petals that just sat there like there was no wind or water current acting on them. She smiled to me and sat on the ground, crossing her legs."Now, dear Sequoia, we sit and watch."Sephora:Chapter 18 Sephora: The sun had barely graced the horizon, and yet, I could still hear her. Her fire flickered in the darkness, reflected by the tip of her spear, which she hadnât set down since the previous evening. I could still remember the look on Niylahâs face when Sequoia refused to eat dinner, picked up her spear and walked out into the cold night. Since then, her fire had been burning, illuminating the night, only stopping for brief minutes to rest. She didnât take her loss very well. The disappointment was etched into her soul, and I couldnât blame her. But thisâtraining herself till exhaustionâwas not the way. Food, rest, the Goddess had created them for a reason. As I lay in my bed, I watched my window be illuminated by the orange of her flame. Compared to when she had started yesterday, it has severely weakened, flickering like a weak fire starved of wood. I couldnât take it anymore. I wanted her to be ready for the rites but this⌠I had to deal with this.
Sephora's POV âSisters! Today we train! We must strengthen our bodies, minds and souls! The power the Goddess gives us must not be wasted!âMy sister's voices filled the air, carried by the wind as they reached the furthest ends of the pack.Artemisia stepped forward. I smiled; it had been ages since I had seen her in her gear: Her bronze chest plate, dazzling with bright blue jewels, polished by Lunariaâs waters and blessed by the Goddess herself. Her spear was in her hand. Ornate and delicate but deadly in the hands of an expert like herself, its tip reflecting the early morning sun. Regal Artemisia.âSeparate yourselves!" Her voice was loud and rumbling, commanding respect as the sisters separated themselves according to their abilities.Niylah stood in front of the water wolves, her small beautiful frame and bright blue eyes reflecting the sun's light as she stood at attention in her gear. She was a fine piece. Artemisia had outdone herself. If onlyâŚI turned to Sephora, the on
Sephora's POV âSequoia! No! What are you doing?" I stood, hidden by the cover of the green foliage, and watched her talking to a group of strange creatures that surrounded her. They were tall and muscular, nothing like any of our sisters. They had no breasts, and their hair was short, lacking silkiness, and didn't flow in the wind. They surrounded Sequoia and spoke to her. Her smile grew as she talked back to them. Their hard and chiseled facial features hid the evil they harboured in their hearts.âSequoia!" I tried to step forward, to free her from their seduction, but I was stopped by an invisible barrier.I banged on it, but it didn't give way. Tears filled my eyes as I watched her being led astray by these strange creatures.âSequoia! Get away from them! They are evil!" But only I could hear the sound of my voice. She was lost in their talk which was carried by their deep, unearthly voices.I watched in agony as one of the creatures behind her pulled out a knife. My heart sha
Sequoia's POV I sat outside waiting. I watched the sun going down over the horizon, and the pitch blackness of night slowly began to spread its black tarp over the sky.Like a signal, lights in the distance began to flicker as flame torches came to life and campfires were built around every home. The wind rushed gently through my hair. The air was crisp and cold. I took a deep breath and felt my lungs being filled with refreshing air.The night slowly continued its siege and my eyes never left the path that Sephora would walk down on when she came back. Why was she so late? What was Kali even saying to her that would make her stay out this late?I began to worry. The last time she came back like this, she was in a terrible state. I shuddered as I remembered her raw and injured back, the pain on her face and he smiled that held back her groans of agony.I sighed. I hoped she would come back soon, or else I would track her down.âSequoia, are you still there?" I didn't answer the que
Sephora's POV I walked back through the forest with Sequoia silent by my side. I looked at her eyes and saw the dulled color in them: the fire in her had been drained.I could tell the spar against Niylah had made her weary and my words hadn't fully sunken in yet.âCheer up, Sequoia. I presume that the Goddess loves to see a smile on her face." She looked up at me but soon looked away. I could tell that a thousand questions were burning in her mind and it hurt me to not be able to tell her.My back was still throbbing. The pain that was shooting through me was immense. Artemisia's ointment only did so much to make it better.I sighed. I didn't think that the Goddess was cruel in her judgment. These were just how we lived, these were the things that we did to keep our people alive. The old ways had to be respected, regardless.I slipped into my mind and accessed Sequoia. She was stronger now but not nearly as ready as I needed her to be to take me on, to end myâŚI needed to soar with
Sequoia's POV I was up with the sun but I was frantic. There was a chill that ran through the house. Sephora was gone. Her bed was cold and so was the lamp stand. I tried to get myself under control.I saw her yesterday. She was talking with Artemisia. She asked Niylah to take me inside.I woke up and saw Artemisia but there was no sign of Sephora. I had asked her where she was but she said nothing. She walked away from me without a word. I felt my heart give way. IâŚâSequoia!" That was Niylah's voice. I felt life return to me and I dashed toward her loud voice. My heart was still thumping wildly.I reached the front door and there I saw her.Artemisia was holding her, supporting her as she walked with a slight limp. Her skin was covered with blood that seemed to drip from her back. She was in pain but as soon as she locked eyes with me, she rebuffed Artemisia's help and smiled at me.âSequoiaâŚâI couldn't contain myself and dashed towards her. Artemisia glared at me but I ignored
