Cassian and I went to the door, but no one was there.

“Well, I have to find a new place to talk.” Cassian said.

“You think someone is really listening.” I said.

He replied with a nod.

“We have to be careful.” I added.

We both went our separate ways. I saw Lila on the way and we went to the dormitory. Thank God Meave left for her room.

She is such a character.

The next morning, Instructor Rowan changed the training schedule.

I was curious why he did that. I an

After class, Professor Rowan gathered us beneath the covered walkway to discuss our observations. Most of the students had dirt on their uniforms. One had a grass stain across his cheek, and another was still picking hay out of her hair. The instructor looked thoroughly unimpressed by all of us.“Today was not about proving that you could control a creature,” he said. “It was about learning when not to interfere. Strength without judgement is merely another problem for someone else to solve.”His gaze travelled across the group.“Remember that.”I thought about the creature's flattened ears and the way it had hesitated when its path was blocked. I'd been so focused on completing the exercise that I hadn't understood what it needed until I stopped trying to direct every movement. There was probably a lesson in that. I just wasn't ready to admit how many other things it might apply to. As we gathered our belongings, a boy from another group approached me.“You were the one who told that

“Maybe we should approach from the side,” Lila whispered.I nodded. We moved slowly, leaving enough room between ourselves and the fence. The creature took a few steps forward, then stopped to chew.Lila glanced at me.“Is it supposed to be eaten during an examination?”“I don't think it knows we're being examined.”“Lucky thing.”I bit back a laugh. We tried again. This time, the creature walked several paces before abruptly turning and trotting towards the opposite side. Lila blinked.“Did it just ignore us?”“I think it did.”“Rude.”We spent the next few minutes making almost no progress.Every time we adjusted our position, the creature found another direction to wander. It stopped to sniff the ground, scratched its neck against a wooden post and appeared entirely uninterested in our academic ambitions.By the time it wandered back to the middle, Lila had begun negotiating with it under her breath.“Please. Just this once.” she pleaded. I pressed my lips together.“Stop laughin

By the time class ended, my boots were dirty, my notes were incomplete, and Maeve had somehow acquired a handful of hay that she insisted was not her fault. Selene looked ready to resign from their group permanently.“You distracted the creature,” she complained.“I was encouraging it,” Maeve replied.“You offered it food from your pocket!” she said. “It looked hungry.”“It tried to bite you!” Selene exclaimed. “It was a misunderstanding.”Lila burst out laughing.I joined her, and even Selene's furious expression began to crack. We walked back towards the main buildings with the other students, the afternoon sun falling across the stone path. People were discussing the lesson, arguing about who had performed best and complaining about the next assignment. For once, I wasn't listening for danger. I was listening to my friends argue about hay and it felt good. At the steps, Adrian caught up with us.“So,” he said, falling into step beside me, “you survived.”I looked at him. “Were yo

By the time I woke properly, I had almost forgotten the dream.Lila was already sitting on her bed, struggling to tie her hair while holding a book between her knees. She caught me watching her in the mirror.“What?”“Nothing.” I replied. “You've been staring at me for a whole minute.”“I have not.”She raised an eyebrow. I pulled my blanket over my head.“Good morning to you too, Nira.”I heard her laugh. A moment later, something soft hit me in the face. I pulled the blanket down, it was my sock.“Lila!”“You looked cold.” she said. “You threw a sock at me.” I answered. “And now you're awake.” She stood, looking entirely too pleased with herself, and reached for her bag.I shook my head, laughing despite myself. Whatever strange feeling the dream had left behind disappeared beneath the familiar chaos of getting ready for class. Besides, it had only been a dream. And Lila was Lila.By the time we reached the dining hall, Maeve had already secured a plate of food and was guarding

Lila… I waited until the corridor was empty. The academy had gone quiet hours ago. Most students were asleep.I stood near the old stairwell with my hands tucked into the sleeves of my robe, listening to the faint sound of footsteps approaching.Adrian appeared from the shadows. He stopped several feet away. Neither of us spoke immediately. Then I reached into my pocket.A folded piece of paper, small. Nothing that would look important to anyone else.I held it out gently. Adrian took it after long hesitation. His eyes moved over the writing.“Nira's schedule?”I nodded.“Classes. Training. Library.”He folded the paper once.“Anything else?”I hesitated. Then said quietly,“She can hear heartbeats now.”His eyes lifted. I saw something change in his face.“How strong?” Adrian asked.“I don't know.” I replied.“Has she told anyone?”“Cassian doesn't know.”Adrian waited.“She told me.”The words felt heavier once they were spoken. Adrian looked away.“You shouldn't have let her.”My

By the following week, I had stopped checking the doors before entering a classroom. It was a small thing. Probably meaningless to anyone else. But I noticed. For the first time since coming to Grimhalden, I could walk into the dining hall without wondering whether someone was watching me. I could sit through a lecture without expecting something terrible to interrupt it. I could complain about an exam like everyone else.It felt strangely normal. And I liked it.Especially when Lila was around. She had a way of making ordinary things feel important. That afternoon, we were sitting on the floor of our dormitory with our books scattered between us.Lila was supposed to be studying. Instead, she was braiding a piece of my hair.“You're pulling too hard.”“Beauty requires sacrifice.”“This is not beauty.”She laughed.I reached behind me and touched the braid. It was uneven, very uneven.“Lila.”“What?” she exclaimed.“What did you do?”She leaned around to look. Her face fell.“Oh.”I t
