LOGINFive years ago, Elena Vale disappeared after the night her secret marriage to Adrian Blackthorn, the ruthless Alpha King, was destroyed. Adrian believed his wife betrayed him. Elena believed Adrian abandoned her. Neither knew that someone had manipulated their memories and deliberately torn them apart. Now Elena is back—with a five-year-old son and secrets that could threaten the entire supernatural world. The moment Adrian sees her again, his wolf recognizes the woman his heart never truly forgot. But Elena refuses to become his obedient mate again. As enemies close in, forgotten memories begin returning, revealing that their separation was never an accident. Someone inside Adrian's kingdom knows the truth. And that person will do anything to keep Elena from remembering who she really is. Because Elena isn't simply the Alpha King's forgotten wife. She may be the most powerful woman his kingdom has ever feared.
View MoreElena Vale ran with her son on her back and death breathing behind her.
"Mama, they're close," Noah whispered into her neck.
"I know, baby. Hold on tight."
Branches whipped her face. Her lungs burned. Somewhere behind them, a wolf howled, and two more answered from the left.
They were circling her. Herding her.
Elena didn't slow down. She had been running for six hours, and she had only one place left to go.
The one place she had sworn never to see again.
Blackthorn territory.
Ahead, between the trees, she saw the first border marker: a black iron post carved with a thorned crown. Her stomach twisted.
Five years, she thought. Five years, and I'm still running straight back to you.
A wolf slammed into her from the side.
Elena hit the ground hard. Noah rolled free with a cry. She shoved herself up, snatched the silver knife from her boot and turned.
The rogue stood over her, huge and gray, its yellow eyes full of hunger. It shifted halfway, fur melting into skin, until a man crouched in front of her with blood on his teeth.
"Hand over the boy," he said. "The Warden's child. We've been told to take him alive, but nobody said you'd have to be."
Elena's blood went cold.
Warden.
She had never told anyone that word. She didn't even know what it meant.
"Stay behind me, Noah," she said.
"Mama..."
"Behind me."
The rogue lunged. She slashed, caught his arm, and he roared. His claws raked her shoulder, and white pain exploded down her arm. She fell to one knee.
He grabbed her hair and dragged her head back.
"Pretty," he said. "Shame."
Then the night itself seemed to split open.
Something enormous hit the rogue so hard he flew twenty feet and crashed through a tree. A wolf landed in front of Elena, black as a moonless sky, big as a horse, with eyes like molten gold.
It didn't look at the rogue.
It turned its head and looked at her.
Elena stopped breathing.
She knew those eyes.
She knew them in the dark, in her dreams, in the places where her memory had been cut out of her like a rotten tooth. She knew them the way you know the sound of your own name.
The black wolf growled, low and terrible, and went for the rogue's throat. It was over in seconds. The other two rogues turned to run, and the guards pouring out of the trees brought them down.
Then the big wolf stood still, chest heaving, blood on its muzzle.
And it began to change.
Fur became skin. Bone shifted. A man rose from the ground, tall and bare-chested in torn black trousers, his dark hair wet with rain, his jaw tight with rage.
Adrian Blackthorn.
Elena's body betrayed her at once.
Her heart slammed against her ribs. Heat rushed through her, a stupid, helpless heat, and every cell in her body leaned toward him like a flower toward the sun.
No, she told herself. No. He's the man who threw you away.
She had one clear memory of him. Only one. His cold face, his voice reading the word banished like it was nothing.
She hated that her body had never believed it.
Adrian stared at her.
For a moment, the Alpha King of the supernatural world looked like a man who had been hit in the chest.
"You," he said. His voice was rough. It sounded like it had been dragged over gravel. "Elena."
Hearing her name in his mouth almost broke her.
She tightened her grip on the knife and pushed herself to her feet. Blood ran warm down her arm.
"Stay where you are," she said.
His eyes dropped to the blade. Then to the blood. Something dark crossed his face.
"You're hurt."
"Stay back."
He took a step toward her anyway.
She raised the knife and pressed it against his throat.
The guards behind him went still. Someone drew a sharp breath. Wolves growled, and weapons came up.
"Don't," Adrian said, without looking away from her. His voice carried the power of a king. "Anyone who touches her answers to me."
The knife trembled in Elena's hand.
He didn't flinch. He didn't pull back. The silver blade rested against the pulse in his neck, and he stood there as if he had been waiting five years for her to cut it.
"Go ahead," he said softly.
"Don't tempt me."
"I'm not tempting you." His gaze burned. "I'm asking you what you came here to do."
"I came here to..." She faltered. She hadn't expected this close. She hadn't expected the smell of him, cedar and rain and something that made her knees weak. "I didn't come for you."
"No?" His eyes moved over her face, slow and hungry and furious all at once. "You crossed my border at midnight, bleeding, with a pack of rogues behind you. You say that isn't for me?"
"I came because I had nowhere else."
Something flickered in his expression. It was there and gone.
"Then you're in the right place," he said. "You're on my land. Which means you're mine to protect."
"I am not yours."
Silence.
The word hung between them, sharp as the knife.
Adrian's jaw flexed. His wolf was right there in his eyes, she could see it, fighting to get out, fighting to get to her.
"Put it down, Elena."
"Why? So you can finish what you started?"
"What I..." He stopped. Confusion cut through his anger. "What are you talking about?"
Before she could answer, a small hand tugged at her coat.
"Mama?"
Her heart stopped.
Noah stepped out from behind her legs, small and pale in the moonlight, his dark curls tangled with leaves. He wasn't afraid. He was looking straight at Adrian with wide, serious eyes.
"Noah, get back," Elena whispered.
Noah didn't move.
Adrian looked down.
And Elena watched the exact moment it happened.
She watched the Alpha King see his son.
Noah's eyes caught the light. Gold, with a silver ring around the pupil. The same gold. The same ring. The same eyes that had just stared at her out of a wolf's face.
All the color left Adrian's skin.
The guards saw it too. A murmur rippled through them.
"Who," Adrian said, and his voice cracked in the middle, "is this?"
"No one," Elena said quickly. "He's no one. He's mine."
"Elena."
"He's mine."
Noah tilted his head.
"You're the man in my dreams," he said.
Adrian stopped breathing.
Behind him, one of the rogues, bleeding on the ground and not quite dead, lifted his head and snarled. Two of the guards turned to finish him.
"Stop," said Noah.
He didn't shout. He only said it, quietly, as a child would.
The air shuddered.
Every wolf in the clearing froze. The guards. The rogue. Even the wind. Then, one by one, strong, scarred Blackthorn warriors went down on one knee in the mud, their heads bowing, their bodies obeying something they did not understand.
They were kneeling to a five-year-old boy.
Elena looked at Noah in horror.
Adrian looked at him like the ground had fallen away.
And in the silence, his wolf's voice must have screamed in his head, because Elena saw him say one word, barely a whisper, without sound:
Son.
Adrian heard it.He heard it in the ballroom. He heard it in the car. He heard it in the clinic, when they laid her on the white bed and stitched the cut in her throat. He heard it in the quiet three hours after, when the drug finally left her system, and she slept.Cassian.He sat in a chair beside her bed, elbows on his knees, staring at her sleeping face.It was a name. Only a name. It meant nothing.A man's name. Her lips said it like a prayer. His wolf was a living thing in his chest, pacing, growling. Who? it demanded. Who is he? Who is the man she calls when she's dying?"Easy," he muttered. "Easy. We don't know."Find out.Adrian rubbed his eyes.He was being a fool. He knew it. She had nearly died tonight, and his first coherent thought, after the fear, was jealousy. You've lost your mind, he told himself. You're sitting here wondering if your wife has a lover, when someone is trying to kill her.But five years of silence made a man hungry in strange ways. He wanted to know e
Elena didn't scream. She did something better. She drove her heel into the attacker's instep, twisted in his grip, and slammed her elbow into his jaw. The blade nicked her neck, a hot line of pain, but she was already moving. Her free hand caught the charm at her throat. It burned like a coal."Duck," said a voice, very calm. She dropped.A black shape tore through the dark. There was a roar. A body hit the wall, and silence followed.Light flickered back on.The ballroom was chaos. Tables overturned. Guests screaming. Guards pouring in. And in the center of it, Adrian Blackthorn, half-shifted, his hands clawed and his eyes blazing gold, stood over three unconscious men. Then he saw Elena. Her gown was torn. A thin line of blood ran down her neck, soaking into the blue silk. She stood on shaking legs with a shard of glass in her fist.He crossed the floor in two strides."You're bleeding.""It's a scratch.""It's blood.""Adrian..."He caught her face in both hands, tilted her chin, a
The Winter Accord Gala was held every year in the ballroom of the Silverlight Hotel. Every Alpha, every Council member, every pack with an ounce of power came to be seen.Elena hated it on sight."I look ridiculous," she muttered, tugging at the deep blue gown."You look," said Adrian from the doorway of her dressing room, "like someone who could end a war."She turned. He was wearing black, a perfect tailored suit with a white shirt open at the throat, no tie. His hair was still damp. He looked lethal and unfairly beautiful. She forgot what she was going to say."Thank you," she managed."I mean it.""I know.""I'll be beside you all night.""I can protect myself.""I know that, too." He crossed the room, slowly. "But I'd like to be there while you do."His hand rose, and for a moment she thought he'd touch her face. Instead he fastened a thin silver chain at her neck. At the end hung a small black crescent."What is it?""My mother's. It's a warning charm. If anyone with a weapon co
They left the Council under heavy guard. The convoy wound through the city, then out onto the mountain road, and finally into the trees. By midnight, the black SUV rolled into a stone hunting lodge hidden among the pines, one of Adrian's oldest safehouses."It's secure," Lucas had promised on the phone. "Four guards on the perimeter. Silver wire in the walls. Nobody gets in who isn't invited."It was beautiful. Warm firelight. Thick rugs. A kitchen stocked with food.It had exactly one bed."There are two guest rooms," Elena said."One has a broken pipe," said the housekeeper, apologetic. "And the other is being aired.""Noah can sleep in the small room.""The small room is a closet, miss."Elena looked at Adrian. He was very carefully not looking at her. "I'll take the couch.""The couch is too short.""I've slept on worse.""You'll wake up crippled.""Then I'll be a crippled king."She rolled her eyes. "Don't be ridiculous. We'll share."Silence.His eyes lifted to hers. Slow, dark,
