Elena found the box on the third day after the gala.

It was hidden where she should have looked first: inside the folded blue scarf on the chair in her old room. The scarf had sat untouched for five years. Adrian had kept everything exactly as she left it.

Including the secret she had hidden in the hem.

She unpicked the stitches with a nail file while Adrian watched from the doorway, arms crossed, jaw tight.

"You sewed it in yourself?"

"I think so. My hands remembered before I did." She tugged

  • THE ALPHA KING'S FORGOTTEN WIFE   Noah's First Shift

It happened in the Tower kitchen.Elena had brought Noah down for a snack, because a child who had just survived a gala and a break-in deserved cake. A young kitchen worker named Daniel stood on a stepladder, reaching for a high shelf. The ladder slipped.Daniel fell, and the huge copper pot on the shelf fell with him.Elena lunged. She was too far away."Noah, stay back!"He didn't. He ran, five years old, forty pounds of stubborn courage, straight under the falling pot.Time slowed.Elena saw her son's face turn. Saw his eyes blaze gold and silver. Saw his small body twist, and something shimmer around him like heat above asphalt. Then fur.Pale fur, white as moonlight, sprouted along his arms and back. His face lengthened. A tiny, perfect wolf stood in the place of her little boy, no bigger than a large dog, and he leaped. He caught Daniel's collar in his jaws. He hauled backward. The pot struck the tile where the man's head had been and rang like a bell.Silence.Elena stood froze

"Lucian," Adrian said.He didn't move. He didn't step back. He simply stood in the closet door with Elena half behind him, and let a silence stretch until it became a weapon."My lord," said Lucian pleasantly. "I wonder if you'd care to explain why the King and his Queen are hiding among my overcoats.""I'd rather not.""Ah.""It's personal.""I see." Lucian's gaze flicked to Elena, to her flushed cheeks, to Adrian's hand on her waist. A faint smile curved his mouth. "Of course. Forgive me. I assumed...""What did you assume?""That you were searching my study.""Why would I?""I can think of several reasons.""Name one."Lucian didn't blink. He looked at Adrian for a long moment, then a long moment more. The air in the room felt thin.Elena realized, with a sudden jolt of fear, that Adrian was not going to talk his way out of this. He was a king. He had never learned to lie well.So she did it for him.She stepped out from behind Adrian, hooked a hand into his collar, and kissed him.

  • THE ALPHA KING'S FORGOTTEN WIFE   The Study

"This is a terrible idea," Adrian whispered."You didn't have to come.""You didn't have to go without telling me.""I'm telling you now.""You told me at nine fifty-two.""It's a very efficient plan."They crept down the east corridor, side by side, in the dim light. The guards' shift change had left a gap. Elena counted seconds as they went. She had a small flashlight in her pocket and Seraphina's key in her fist. The door to Lucian's study was dark oak, polished, unmarked. The key slid into the lock without a sound.Inside, the room smelled of old books and pipe smoke. A fireplace. A great leather chair. A desk covered in neat stacks of paper."We have ten minutes," Elena murmured."Eleven," Adrian said. "I counted.""Of course you did."They split up. She took the desk. He took the shelves. Her fingers moved quickly through folders: treaties, trade agreements, letters of condolence. Nothing."Elena."His voice was strange. She turned. He was crouched at a low cabinet in the corner

  • THE ALPHA KING'S FORGOTTEN WIFE   Seraphina's Offer

Seraphina found her in the winter garden.Elena had gone there to breathe. The glass room on the Tower's thirtieth floor was warm and green and, usually, empty. She sat on a bench beside a fountain that no longer ran, rubbing the sore place on her neck where the blade had cut."You shouldn't be alone," said a cool voice.Elena's hand flew to the knife in her boot."Relax," Seraphina said. She wore cream silk and no jewelry, and her hair hung loose. Without the polish, she looked younger. Tired. "If I wanted to hurt you, I'd have done it at the gala.""That's not comforting.""It wasn't meant to be.""What do you want?"Seraphina sat on the other end of the bench. For a moment she watched the dead fountain."I want to tell you something," she said. "And I need you not to interrupt, because I will only say it once."Elena waited."I am not engaged to Adrian.""You told the whole Council you were his future Queen.""I was told to say it." A thin, bitter smile. "By someone who holds somet

My hands remembered before I did." She tugged the last thread. "It felt like muscle memory."A small square of blue cloth fell into her palm. Inside it was a box of black wood, no bigger than a deck of cards, carved with a crescent moon. Her mark warmed against her wrist."Open it," Adrian said quietly."What if it's a trap?""Then I'll catch whatever flies out."She almost smiled. She slid back the lid.Inside lay a small silver key, delicate and old, its handle shaped like a half-moon. Under it, a folded letter in thin, shaky handwriting.

  • THE ALPHA KING'S FORGOTTEN WIFE   Who Is Cassian?

Adrian heard it.He heard it in the ballroom. He heard it in the car. He heard it in the clinic, when they laid her on the white bed and stitched the cut in her throat. He heard it in the quiet three hours after, when the drug finally left her system, and she slept.Cassian.He sat in a chair beside her bed, elbows on his knees, staring at her sleeping face.It was a name. Only a name. It meant nothing.A man's name. Her lips said it like a prayer. His wolf was a living thing in his chest, pacing, growling. Who? it demanded. Who is he? Who is the man she calls when she's dying?"Easy," he muttered. "Easy. We don't know."Find out.Adrian rubbed his eyes.He was being a fool. He knew it. She had nearly died tonight, and his first coherent thought, after the fear, was jealousy. You've lost your mind, he told himself. You're sitting here wondering if your wife has a lover, when someone is trying to kill her.But five years of silence made a man hungry in strange ways. He wanted to know e
