Rowan

We didn't name her for three days.

Not because we hadn't thought about it. We'd thought about it for months, argued about it in the dark, crossed off lists, and landed on nothing. Then she arrived with that scowl and a fist wrapped around my thumb, and every name we'd picked seemed like it belonged to someone else.

"She doesn't look like a Midnight," Athena said on the second night, propped against the pillows with the baby asleep on her chest.

"She doesn't look like a Lake either."

  • THE ALPHA’S BROKEN MATE   Chapter 64: Six Years Later

AthenaZiri got her first tooth the same week Amara shifted for the first time, and I'm not sure which one made me cry harder.Amara was eleven. She'd been waiting for it for months, watching the other Ziri House kids go through it, pretending she didn't mind that her wolf was taking its time. I'd told her the truth, because she hated being talked around. Hybrids shift late. Some never fully do. She could be the first of her kind to do something nobody had a word for yet.She did it on a Sunday, in the east grounds, with Midnight's grandpups circling her and Rowan standing a respectful distance away with his hands in his pockets, trying not to look like a man whose heart was in his throat.I felt it before I saw it. Something shifted in the air, a pull at the base of my skull that I hadn't felt since the bond. Then silver light, a ripple, the sound of bones doing something miraculous and impossible. And then there was a wolf.Small, rangy, red coated, with Rowan's silver eyes. She sto

RowanWe didn't name her for three days. Not because we hadn't thought about it. We'd thought about it for months, argued about it in the dark, crossed off lists, and landed on nothing. Then she arrived with that scowl and a fist wrapped around my thumb, and every name we'd picked seemed like it belonged to someone else."She doesn't look like a Midnight," Athena said on the second night, propped against the pillows with the baby asleep on her chest."She doesn't look like a Lake either.""Amara's going to be heartbroken.""Amara will survive."Amara, as it turned out, had other plans. She'd been quiet since the birth, which in her was a warning sign. On the third morning she knocked three fast, one slow, and came in carrying the folded paper from months ago, plus a new sheet, covered front and back in pencil. She stood at the foot of the bed with her chin up."I've been thinking," she said."Always," Athena said."I'm in charge of the middle name. You said maybe.""We said maybe," I

  • THE ALPHA’S BROKEN MATE   Chapter 62: Water Breaks

AthenaIt started in the shop, which is exactly where I'd told everyone it wouldn't.Thirty seven weeks. I'd been promised two more. I was halfway through shading the wing of a bird on Vera's shoulder blade, her second session, when something low in my belly clenched so hard I put the machine down mid line."You okay?" Vera said into the table."Fine." I picked the machine back up. "Don't move."Ten minutes later it happened again. I finished the wing. I'm not proud of it. Vera was a saint about it afterwards, looking over her shoulder with her mouth open as I wrapped her, because by then my trousers were wet and I was standing very still in a puddle."Athena," she said."I know.""Your water.""I know, Vera.""Should I get someone?"I started laughing. It turned into something else halfway through, a groan that came from somewhere around my knees, and I grabbed the edge of the station. "Get Amara. She's in the nook. Then get Rowan, then Peri, and then maybe sit down, you're going whi

  • THE ALPHA’S BROKEN MATE   Chapter 61: Twenty Eight Weeks

RowanThe call came at three in the morning, and I was awake before the phone finished its first ring. That's what Athena says I do now. I sleep like a man waiting for a siege. She's not wrong. It was Dena, from the communication room, voice flat and careful the way it gets when something is wrong but not yet bad. A border unit had picked up movement in the outer territories. Not rogues. A convoy, six vehicles, Silverthorne plates, no notice sent."Whose plates?" I asked."The Alpha's own."I sat up. Athena stirred beside me, one hand on her stomach, the way she always was now, even asleep."What is it?" she mumbled."Your father. Possibly. He's on the road."She was fully awake in a second. "He wouldn't come without calling.""No," I said. "He wouldn't."I called him. It rang out. I called Ethan, who answered on the first ring, breathless, with wind roaring behind him."Don't be angry," Ethan said. "He wouldn't wait. He said he had a feeling.""A feeling.""About Athena. He woke up a

  • THE ALPHA’S BROKEN MATE   Chapter 60: Yellow

AthenaWe painted the nursery on a Saturday, and it went badly. Not disastrously. Just the way things go when four people with no real painting experience decide a wall will take an hour. Rowan had taped the edges like he was defusing a bomb, three separate rolls, every line ruler straight. Amara had been given a small brush and the job of doing the bottom strip, which she took more seriously than any of us. Chase arrived late with a ladder nobody asked for and an opinion about rollers.I was banned from the ladder. Also from the fumes, per the medical woman, so I sat in a chair in the doorway with my feet on a crate and gave directions nobody followed."You missed a spot," I said."Where?" Rowan didn't turn."Left. No, your left. Higher.""There's no spot.""There's a spot.""Mama's right," Amara said, without looking up. "It's the size of a biscuit."Rowan looked. There was a spot the size of a biscuit. He fixed it with the expression of a man who had been caught out by a five year

  • THE ALPHA’S BROKEN MATE   Chapter 59: The First Kick

RowanShe was nineteen weeks when I felt it.I'd been warned. Lake had read four books on the subject and delivered a summary nobody asked for, the medical woman had described it as a flutter, a bubble, a tiny fish turning over. None of it prepared me for lying in the dark with my hand on Athena's stomach and something knocking back.I stopped breathing."Did you," I said."Yes." Her voice was soft and kind of wondering. "That's the third one tonight. She's showing off.""She?""I don't know. Amara says she." Athena shifted onto her side so my palm stayed where it was. "Amara also said the baby told her.""The baby told her.""Through the wall of my stomach. Apparently she's very chatty."I laughed, and the knock came again, right under my fingers, as if it had heard. Something in my chest went loose and strange. Six years ago I wasn't there for any of it. I didn't feel Amara turn over for the first time, I didn't know there was a Amara. I'd lain awake in a palace three days' drive aw

  • THE ALPHA’S BROKEN MATE   Chapter 4: Rowan

Rowan's Pov The door slammed shut, the vibration heavy in my heart.I wiped off the blood with the wipes from Lake.“What a bit—” I shot Lake a glare, he paused half way, “your highness, how could you stand up for that omega that doesn't know her place” he grumbled. “It's fine. I hurt her too.

Athena“At least, the moon goddess could have mated me to someone easier to keep around, maybe as a mistress. But with her no way” he said distastefully. I staggered back, everything from the previous night flashing through my thoughts, years of pain and humiliation came crashing down.He was like

  • THE ALPHA’S BROKEN MATE   Chapter 2 :Athena

Athena “I should be the one asking that.” His eyes narrowed,I racked my brains for answers, my brain felt foggy, but bits and pieces of last night's encounter came back. I shot up from the bed instantly, a whimper escaped my lips, I hadn't felt it cause the bed supported me but now I did. My ba

  • THE ALPHA’S BROKEN MATE   Chapter 1: Athena

AthenaI tugged at my collar, my head dizzy, everything around me tilted sideways, the heat was growing, which was practically speaking impossible within these four words.“Greetings Your highness” a voice greeted and sauntered off, I could barely make out who it was, my senses were getting duller,
