"Is this all we are to the cosmos?" Seraphina asked, her voice cracking as she leaned against the damp stone wall of a shallow, hidden ridge.

The smoke from the destroyed cavern still stained the distant northern horizon, a dark smudge against the gray sky. She pulled her torn cloak tightly around her shoulders, her fingers tracing the dual pulses of the Moon Hearts beneath her skin.

"Just pieces on a board? Marks to be hunted down, bonds to be forged because some ancient starlight decided it

"Traitors in the council!" Kaelor snarled, his golden eyes blazing with a dangerous, unstable fire as he drew his dark obsidian sword with a metallic screech. "Varick... that bastard sold out his own people!""The guards at the northern gate didn't even have time to draw their steel," Lysander rasped, his face pale, wiped with a streak of warm crimson blood that was not his own. "They didn't come with an army, Ashthorne. They came with a strike team!""Lysander, who breached the inner court?" Seraphina demanded, stepping out from behind Kaelor's crimson barrier. The three Moon Hearts in her chest were vibrating violently, reacting to the wave of dark ozone choking the crisp night air."The Crimson Fangs," Lysander hissed, his shadow-aura coiling tightly around his arms like jagged black whips. "Garrick’s personal executioners. Blood-bound thralls who feel no pain, fear no fire, and stop for nothing."Down in the festival plaza, the sweet smell of roasted honey-nuts and white birc

The golden-silver shield anchored by the Third Moon Heart sat over the Frost Capital like an invisible silk canopy, muting the bitter mountain gale into a gentle, cool breeze. Below the palace battlements, the grand cobblestone plazas were alive with color. Paper lanterns dyed in shades of midnight blue and shimmering violet swung from frozen archways, casting a soft, romantic glow across the snow-dusted streets."If you told me two months ago that I would be standing in the middle of a Frost Kingdom street eating sweet roasted honey-nuts without someone trying to execute me, I would have laughed in your face," Seraphina said softly, taking a small bite of the steaming pastry in her hand. Her cheeks were flushed from the cool air, her long silver hair braided loosely over one shoulder."You deserve far more than honey-nuts, little bird," Lysander murmured, walking at her left shoulder. He had shed his heavy shadow-armor for a fitted, charcoal-grey tunic trimmed with silver, though

"Seraphina!"Kaelor’s panicked roar shattered the heavy oak door into a shower of splinters, the massive High King bursting into the bedchamber like a celestial tempest of crimson fire."Get away from her!"Lysander’s shadow blade flashed in the dim room, a streak of lethal dark energy aimed directly at the assassin’s neck. The intruder let out a sharp, hiss-like breath, releasing Seraphina's mouth and leaping backward toward the high arched window. The shadowy figure vaulted onto the stone sill, flipping backward into the howling night wind of the gorge below."Lysander, chase them!" Kaelor yelled, throwing his sword aside as he dropped to his knees beside the bed.His large, trembling hands cupped Seraphina's face, his golden eyes wide with a frantic terror as he inspected the tiny droplet of silver blood on her throat."Are you hit? Did the blade have poison on it? Seraphina, answer me!""I'm... I'm breathing," Seraphina gasped, clutching her throat, her chest heaving violently as

"Look at the battlements," Lysander whispered, his gravelly voice barely audible over the crunch of their boots against the pristine white marble path leading to the high palace. His sharp, obsidian eyes darted upward, tracking dozens of archers standing at rigid attention along the icy parapets. "They aren't raising their bows. That's a good sign for an Ashthorne walking into silver territory.""Don't flatter yourself, Ravenhart. Queen Elowen is an ancient ruler. She doesn't waste iron on political theater. If she wanted us executed, she would have collapsed the mountain pass behind us," Kaelor muttered, keeping his hand resting lightly near the pommel of his sheathed sword, though his golden eyes were relaxed. "Quiet, both of you," Seraphina murmured. She pulling her wool cloak tighter around her shoulders as two rows of royal elite guards, clad in gleaming silver plate and white furs, snapped their spears upright in unison. At the top of the grand marble staircase, standing

"He went toward the sunken aqueducts! Move! Don't let him break line of sight!" Lysander shouted, his voice cut with a razor edge of absolute fury as his body blurred into a shadow-streak across the snow. "I have his scent!" Kaelor roared. His massive boots crushing the frozen marble steps as he vaulted over a collapsed pillar. His golden eyes were wide, burning with a dangerous, unstable fire as his crimson aura scorched the bitter air. "He smells of ozone, old ink, and human blood! He’s running into the Old Ruins!""Keep up with them, Seraphina!" Jaxon called out from behind, leading a small squad of frost-guards through the billowing smoke, but Seraphina was already moving. Her chest felt hollow, a raw, aching vacuum where the Second Moon Heart’s sapphire pulse had been forcibly severed, but the remaining starlight in her blood pushed her forward. She ran past the frozen statues of the city gates, her lungs burning against the sub-zero wind as she tracked the dark fluid drople

"We don't have time to ponder ten thousand year old portraits!" Lysander’s voice shattered the stunned silence of the subterranean vault like a falling iron gate. He grabbed Seraphina’s arm, his dark eyes wide as a low, violent tremor shook the foundation of the underground library. "Look at the floor!""The stone is weeping black fluid. It isn't coming from the Crimson Dominion's capital. The signal was a feint. They're marching on the Frost Kingdom!" Kaelor growled, his ancient blade snapping up as a sickening, familiar smell of ozone and rotten flesh filled the air."The Frost Kingdom?" Seraphina gasped. Her hand tearing away from the portrait of her own face. The sapphire heart in her chest flared violently, sending a sharp wave of ice-cold agony straight to her core. "The Second Moon Temple... they aren't trying to open it! They're trying to butcher the pack to starve the anchor!""Then we move now. Through the northern vein. Before the gates close forever!" Lysander rasp
