She started two weeks early.

The letter arrived as Selene was finishing off some letters. Kael stood in the doorway, fastening his riding gloves.

"We need to go."

She set aside her pen and hurried out.

They rode hard and were in Draven's territory by mid-afternoon.

The pack house was in chaos. Healers ran around with fresh linen and buckets of hot water, servants moved out of their way. There were muffled voices coming from behind the heavy door to the birthing room.

Ronan was pacing outside.

Selene stopped counting the years somewhere along the way.One spring followed another, and eventually the numbers mattered less than the lives filling them. She noticed the changes in smaller ways. Silver spread through her hair, first at the temples, then across the rest of her head. Kael took longer to rise from his chair, though he still insisted he didn't need help. Their mornings grew quieter, their walks shorter, and their evenings often ended with one of them falling asleep halfway through a conversation.Ashwood changed too.Children grew up, took on responsibilities, and raised families of their own. The consortium expanded its reach, and the Listeners became trusted across territories that had once regarded them with suspicion.Rhys was thirty when he became the consortium's first Head Listener. He accepted the appointment with a solemn bow, then spent most of the ceremony struggling to suppress a laugh. Selene had been proud of him, though she'd nearly laughed herself when

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN LUNA   Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Five: The Last Gathering

By the time autumn settled over Ashwood, the courtyard could barely contain everyone who had come.Scholars from twenty-three territories filled the space between the rebuilt walls. Listeners in their familiar grey cloaks moved among Wardens, keepers, and children who seemed determined to get under everyone's feet. There were old faces Selene hadn't seen in years and younger ones who had grown up knowing a world without the fear that had once governed every gathering. For once, nobody had come because something was wrong. They had come to celebrate.A week earlier, Veyra and Thessaly had announced their decision to step back from the daily watch. The first generation of Listeners would take over the long vigil, while the two elders remained available as counsel. The announcement had been received with surprisingly little resistance.Thessaly, who had spent a thousand years scattered across a continent, seemed almost relieved by the prospect of staying in one place.Veyra had offered o

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN LUNA   Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Four: Years Hence

Seventeen years passed, one ordinary day at a time.Moss spread across the northern walls of Ashwood, slowly covering the scorch marks on the old east wing. The damage remained, but the stone had weathered enough that it no longer stood out.The consortium's records now listed forty-six thresholds. Thirty-eight were quiet, six remained under observation, and two were still unresolved but communicating.Thane had completed the first three volumes of his history and was dictating the fourth from a chair beside the archive window. He was nearly blind, but that hadn't stopped him from demanding that his scribes meet their deadlines.Edrick had died four winters earlier. He'd been sitting in the straight-backed chair beside the courtyard window, with a little girl asleep on his knee. The pack buried him beside the east wall, the one he'd helped rebuild so many times.Selene remembered standing at his grave with Kael's arm around her. She thought of the thin, guilt-ridden man who had once c

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN LUNA   Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Three: What Vale Left Behind

Vale had chosen the study for their meeting.Selene understood why. It was where he had once spent hours going through council records on Ashwood's behalf, back when nobody openly questioned his place in the house. Now he sat beside Isla on the window seat, his hands resting on his knees. A pot of tea stood untouched on the table."I had a speech prepared," he said."He had four," Isla corrected. "He practised three of them on me last night. Every single one started with an apology."Vale gave her a sideways look."The point," he continued, "is that Isla and I are expecting a child. In the spring."Kael pushed back his chair and stood. For a moment, Selene thought he was going to offer Vale his hand. Instead, he crossed the room and pulled him into an embrace. It was awkward. Both men seemed unsure where to put their arms. Considering their history, she supposed that was understandable. They had once been enemies. Now they were celebrating a child together."Congratulations," Kael sai

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN LUNA   Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Two: Aria's Wedding

Aria chose a late autumn afternoon, a garden, and a very short guest list that grew to ninety people by the second week."It was supposed to be twelve," she said, standing in the doorway of her cottage with a spoon in her hand and an expression of mild betrayal. "I counted. I wrote them down. Then Marcus told Ronan, and Ronan told Wren, and Wren told the entire eastern territories.""You were never going to get twelve," Selene said, tucking a stray flower back into the garland above the door. "You have too many people who love you.""It's unreasonable," Aria said, and was clearly delighted. The man she was marrying was named Joren, a healer from the eastern territories with hands scarred from a lifetime of herbs and a dry, unhurried humor that made Aria laugh in a way Selene had never heard from her. Marina had introduced them, with an innocence so thorough it fooled no one. Joren had arrived at Ashwood three weeks early to help prepare and had spent nearly all of them silently repair

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN LUNA   Chapter One Hundred Thirty-One: What Rosalind Said at the End

The consortium had built Rosalind a small stone house on the eastern edge of Ashwood's lands, with a south-facing window and a garden she had planted herself and never once let anyone else weed. Selene walked there the next morning with Rhys asleep against her shoulder and Kael a respectful distance behind, close enough to come running, far enough to be told to stay out.Veyra met her at the gate. She did not say hello. She only said, very quietly, "She is not ill. Do not let her tell you she is ill. She has stopped.""Stopped what?""Borrowing," Veyra said, and opened the door.Rosalind sat in a high-backed chair beside the window, a blanket across her knees, her hair gone the white of old frost. Selene had last seen her at the autumn gathering, a tall, dark-haired woman who still carried herself like a drawn blade. The woman in the chair was small. Her hands lay in her lap like folded paper, and her winter-ice eyes had faded to a soft, ordinary grey."You came," Rosalind said. "And
