(Lyra's POV)

Rhea's cabin smelled like crushed herbs and woodsmoke, tucked far enough from the pack house that most Ashwood wolves forgot it existed, which was exactly why Briar had dragged me there at midnight with a stolen lantern and a face full of nervous determination.

"She was pack healer when the Thorne massacre happened," Briar said, low, like the walls might report back to Marcus. "She's the only wolf left in this territory who was actually there and isn't Damon Ashwood."

Rhea turned out to be older than I expected, silver streaked and unhurried, with eyes that studied me for a long, assessing moment before she spoke. "Thorne," she said. "You have her mother's mouth. Set the same way when you're about to argue with someone."

My chest went tight. "You knew my mother."

"I set her arm once, the winter before it happened." Rhea's voice softened, briefly, before going careful again. "I've wondered for nine years whether the surviving Thorne child would ever come asking questions. Took you long enough."

"I didn't know there were questions to ask," I said. "I was told my pack sold Ashwood hunting routes to human hunters. That they burned for it. I don't remember enough of that night to argue with the story."

"Then let me tell you what doesn't add up about it," Rhea said, and reached under a floorboard for a small, fire scarred tin box. "I kept a few things I probably shouldn't have. Insurance, I told myself, though I never had the courage to use it."

Inside the tin was a half burned ledger page, edges black and curling, most of the writing lost to fire damage, except for a column of names near the bottom, and a single line that had survived almost intact.

"Payment received. D. Ashwood. Territory maps, Thorne perimeter, confirmed."

I read it three times before the words rearranged into something I could actually process. "This says..."

"It says someone with the initial D and the surname Ashwood sold territory maps of Thorne perimeter defenses," Rhea said quietly, "the same week the Thorne pack burned. I found it in the ash the morning after, half a mile from where your parents died. I never showed it to anyone, because the only wolf in this territory with the authority to investigate an Ashwood was the Ashwood in question."

The floor seemed to tilt under me. "Damon."

"I don't know that for certain," Rhea said, careful, precise. "The page is damaged. There could be another explanation. But I have spent nine years watching Damon Ashwood flinch every single time your name comes up in a room, Lyra Thorne, and I do not believe that is a coincidence, and neither, I think, do you."

Briar had gone very quiet beside me, her earlier bravado draining into something closer to fear. "If this is real," she said slowly, "it means the Thorne pack didn't betray Ashwood at all."

"It means," Rhea said, "that someone needed a story where they did. Badly enough to burn an entire pack to make it stick."

I sat with that for a long moment, feeling nine years of carefully buried grief reorganize itself around a shape I hadn't let myself imagine, not my family betrayed the pack that raised me since, but my family was murdered by the pack that raised me since, and blamed for their own deaths so the truth would die with them.

"Why show me now?" I asked. "You've had this for nine years."

Rhea's face did something complicated: guilt, relief, old fear finally finding somewhere to go. "Because three days ago, Kaelan Ashwood's eyes went gold in a corridor in front of half the pack house, and I have watched that boy grow up believing his father is a good man who made hard, necessary choices. I don't know what a forbidden mate bond does to a family built on a lie that old. But I know it's going to force the question eventually, and I would rather you go into that reckoning with the truth in your hands than blind."

I folded the ledger page with hands that weren't quite steady and tucked it inside my jacket, against my ribs, where it felt like it weighed considerably more than a scrap of burned paper had any right to.

"There's a rifle scope pointed at me in the woods two nights ago," I said slowly, thinking it through as I said it. "And an Alpha whose father goes gray at the mention of my name. And now a ledger page with his father's initial on a payment for my family's death."

"Yes," Rhea said.

"That's not a coincidence."

"No," Rhea agreed. "I don't believe it is."

Briar reached over and gripped my hand, hard, grounding. "What are you going to do?"

I thought about Kaelan's voice in the forest, I'm not going to solve it by pretending it happened to someone I don't care about, and about his father's face going the color of old ash when he'd heard about the rifle. I thought about a mate bond that pack law called forbidden, built on top of a secret that was starting to look less like ancient history and more like a live, ongoing threat.

"I'm going to find out exactly what Damon Ashwood did," I said, "before it finds out I already know."

Outside Rhea's cabin, an owl called once into the dark, and somewhere much farther off, carried faint on the wind, I heard the long, deliberate howl of a wolf that didn't belong to Ashwood territory at all.

Rhea's head came up sharply. "That's not one of ours."

"Then whose is it?" I asked.

Her face, in the lantern light, had gone the same particular gray I'd heard about in Damon's.

"Crimson Fang," she said. "Titus Crane's pack. They haven't howled this close to Ashwood land in nine years."

She didn't have to say the rest out loud. We both already understood exactly what anniversary that timing lined up with.

Kaelan Ashwood's POV"Tell me the token is a forgery, Father. Tell me now, before I say the word out loud, because once I say it, I cannot take it back."My father did not look up from the teapot. Dawn crept gray across his study, over the maps and the old weapons on the walls, over the empty chair where my mother used to read. He poured slowly, steadily, and set a cup in front of me as if I had come for breakfast."Sit," Damon said."I will stand.""You are your mother's son. She never sat when she was angry either." He lifted his own cup and sipped. "Show me."I set the brass token on the desk between us. It clicked against the wood, small and ugly. He glanced at it for exactly one heartbeat, and I watched his eyes, because I had spent twenty six years learning to read this man, and I saw nothing. Not fear. Not surprise. It was like watching a locked door."A cheap trick," he said. "Anyone with a file and a steady hand can carve a mark. Half the traders on the southern road forge my

Lyra Thorne's POV"Look at her eyes, Kaelan. Look closely." Thane coughed, and blood ran into his gray beard. "Damon told us the fire took every Thorne. Yet here she stands, breathing, and I am the one who gets to die tonight."The north ridge smelled of frost and pine sap and something metallic underneath. Thane lay against a split boulder with a silver dart buried deep in his shoulder, and the skin around it had already turned a sick, shining gray. Marcus stood over him with a blade drawn. Kaelan stood beside me, so close that his heat pressed against my arm, and I hated how much I needed it."Who fired the dart?" Kaelan asked."Someone who does not like loose ends." Thane laughed again, and it turned into a wet cough. "Someone who was standing right behind me a minute ago. Ask your enforcers how a stranger walks past twelve wolves.""He did not walk past us," Marcus said. "Two of my men saw a cloak go uphill. They followed. Nobody has come back."I crouched beside Thane, and the co

Kaelan Ashwood's POV"Lyra!"Her name tore out of me the moment I realized she was gone from the war tent, and I lost sight of her for four minutes between the canvas flap and the tree line, four minutes that felt like something being carved directly out of my chest one slow inch at a time. I did not remember crossing the camp. I only remembered the moment the trees opened and the world narrowed to exactly one thing.I broke through the last line of pines and what I found on the other side stopped me cold. She was standing three feet from Titus Crane, alone, unarmed, and very deliberately not running, her spine straight in a way that told me she had chosen to stand there, not been caught there."Think about my offer," Titus was saying to her, quiet, unhurried, the way a man speaks when he already believes he has all the time he needs, his voice carrying easily across the clearing despite its softness. "You have more time than you believe. Not as much as you would like.""Get away from

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN LUNA   chapter 49

Lyra Thorne's POV"Loose ends bleed first."I read the three words scrawled across the parchment out loud, and the moment they left my mouth my stomach dropped straight through the floor of Selene's room. The note had been sitting on her windowsill for less than an hour, and it already felt like it had been sitting there for years, the ink somehow darker than any ink had a right to be."No signature," I said, setting the parchment back down with hands that were not quite steady, my own bandaged wrists a fresh reminder of exactly how literally Corwin meant things like that. "He did not need one."Selene sat on the edge of her bed, arms wrapped around herself, the composure I had watched her wear like armor for months finally cracking at the edges, her shoulders drawn in tight as though she were trying to take up as little space in the room as possible. "I keep reading it and expecting it to say something different," she said. "It never does."I picked the note back up and turned it tow

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN LUNA   chapter 48

Kaelan Ashwood's POV"Selene is unharmed."I said it before he could ask, before he could pretend he cared about the answer for the right reasons, my voice cutting flat across the cedar and old parchment smell of my father's study, a smell I hated that some small foolish part of me still found comforting after everything. "Whoever Corwin sent got close enough to leave a warning on her windowsill and nothing more. This time."Damon did not look up from the papers on his desk, and something about his stillness told me he already knew more than he was saying, the same stillness he had worn for seventeen years while an entire pack's murder sat quietly on his conscience. The fire behind him had burned low, throwing more shadow than light across the shelves of ledgers that lined the walls, records of a pack he had built and, I was beginning to understand, quietly poisoned at its foundation. "Corwin was always careful," he said. "He would not risk exposure over a warning that accomplishes no

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN LUNA   chapter 47

Lyra Thorne's POV"Silver burns take three days to fully close," Rhea said, wrapping clean linen around my forearm with the brisk efficiency of a woman who had done this a hundred times before, in worse rooms, for worse reasons. "You will not stop moving for three days. I already know that about you."My wrists were still raw beneath her hands, an hour after Kaelan carried me out of that stone room, and I welcomed the sting of the salve, because it was easier to feel than the fear still sitting cold and heavy in my chest. Every time I closed my eyes I saw Corwin's face in the firelight, patient and unbothered, like burning my family down had cost him nothing at all. The tent around us smelled of dried herbs and tallow candle, warm and close, and somewhere outside I could hear Marcus's enforcers moving in the practiced, quiet rhythm of a camp bracing itself for something."You know me too well for someone I only met four months ago," I said, and it came out lighter than I felt, which w
