Chapter Five: Secrets in the Shadows
The wind howled through the trees that night, carrying a strange energy with itâa pulse that throbbed through the earth and found its way under Ariaâs skin. She couldn't sleep. Not after what Kade had said.
Youâre my mate.
The words haunted her, whispered through her thoughts like a chant she couldnât silence. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw his golden gaze, felt the heat of his presence, remembered how his voice made her blood hum like an ancient song.
The bond.
What did it even mean? That her fate was tied to his? That her heart wasnât her own anymore?
She didnât even know him⌠and yet something inside her did.
Aria wrapped her blanket tighter around her shoulders as she sat curled on the old couch in front of the dying fire. The shadows flickered across the walls, dancing like they knew something she didnât.
Her fingers brushed the spine of the book sheâd brought home from the library. The Crescent Ridge Chronicles. Sheâd read more of it that afternoon, desperate for answers.
âThe bond between a wolf and his mate is unbreakable. It transcends time, race, and even mortality. When the connection is formed, their souls begin to align. The wolf becomes fiercely protective. Possessive. The mate, in return, feels drawn to the wolfâbody, mind, and spirit.â
Aria shivered. That explained the heat in her veins. The ache that had bloomed low in her belly since she met Kadeâs eyes.
But there were other parts that troubled her more.
âA human mate is forbidden in most packs. Her vulnerability is seen as a liability, her humanity a threat to secrecy. Wolves who defy this law risk exileâor worse.â
So heâs putting himself in danger just by coming near me.
She looked toward the window. The woods beyond seemed darker than usual. More alive.
Just then, a soft sound echoed outside. Not the wind. Not an animal.
Footsteps.
Slow. Measured.
Her heart stopped.
Then a knock.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
She stood slowly, heart thudding in her chest as she moved toward the door. Her fingers hovered over the knob.
âWho is it?â
No answer.
But this time, she felt it.
That familiar pull.
The fire in her blood.
She opened the door.
Kade stood there, his black hoodie soaked with rain, hair plastered to his forehead, eyes glowing softly under the moonlight.
âI shouldn't be here,â he said hoarsely. âBut I couldnât stay away.â
Her chest rose and fell rapidly. âYou came back.â
He stepped in slowly, dripping water onto the wooden floor. His gaze swept over herâbare feet, loose sweater, flushed cheeks.
âI canât keep my distance from you,â he murmured. âEvery second away from you feels like a war inside me.â
She swallowed hard, backing up slightly as he shut the door behind him. The storm outside raged, but in that moment, it was silent.
âYouâre risking everything,â she said.
âI know.â
He looked around the cabin, his jaw tight. âYouâre not safe here, Aria. Damonâs not the only one watching. Heâll come again. And next time, he wonât be subtle.â
She hugged herself. âWhat does he want with me?â
Kadeâs eyes darkened. âPower. Chaos. Revenge.â
He stepped closer, voice low. âYouâre my mate. But to others⌠youâre a weapon. A weakness they can exploit. If they take youâhurt youâit destroys me.â
The way he said it⌠raw, unfiltered.
âYou donât even know me,â she whispered, voice trembling.
âI know enough.â
He raised a hand to her face, brushing a thumb along her cheek. âI know your scent calms the monster inside me. I know your voice is the only thing I want to hear when I wake up. And I know if anything happens to you, Iâll lose control.â
Ariaâs breath hitched. Her skin burned under his touch.
âKadeâŚâ
He leaned in slowly, his lips hovering just above hers. âSay the word, Aria, and Iâll walk away. Iâll fight the bond. But if you donâtâŚâ
She didnât.
Instead, she surged forward, capturing his lips with hers.
The kiss was desperateâhungry. His hands tangled in her hair as he pulled her closer, their bodies pressing together like magnets finally snapping into place. Her back hit the wall with a soft gasp as his mouth moved over hers, claiming, devouring.
Every part of her came alive.
She wasnât thinking anymore. She felt.
The kiss deepened, his tongue sliding against hers, slow and possessive. He tasted like rain and fire and something wild. She moaned into his mouth, her fingers clawing at his soaked hoodie.
He broke away just long enough to yank it over his head, revealing a chest sculpted from pure muscle, a long scar slicing diagonally across his left pec.
Before she could ask about it, he was kissing her againâharder this time. His hands explored her curves, memorizing every dip and swell with reverence and hunger.
He lifted her effortlessly, wrapping her legs around his waist as he carried her to the couch.
She didnât care that her sweater was tugged up over her head, exposing her to the cool air. She didnât care that she was trembling under his gaze.
Because his eyesâthose eyesâlooked at her like she was sacred.
âYouâre perfect,â he murmured, trailing kisses down her throat, over her collarbone, lower still. âYou were made for me.â
Her body arched beneath him, desperate for more, for everything.
But thenâ
A sound outside.
A growl.
Low. Dangerous.
Kade froze. His entire body went rigid.
He inhaled sharply, then cursed under his breath.
âThey found me.â
Aria sat up, clutching a blanket around herself. âWhat? Who?â
Kade was already pulling on his hoodie, muscles tense, senses alert.
âRogues,â he said. âWolves who donât follow any pack. Damon mustâve sent them.â
He turned to her, cupping her face. âStay here. Lock the doors. Donât come out until I return.â
âNo,â she whispered, grabbing his arm. âYou canât go out there alone.â
âIâve fought worse,â he said, pressing a kiss to her forehead. âBut if they come insideâif they touch youâI wonât be able to stop myself from tearing this town apart.â
And then, like smoke, he was gone.
Aria rushed to the window, heart in her throat.
She saw shadows moving in the trees. Heard snarls, snapping branches, the heavy thud of paws against wet earth.
Then a flashâKade shifting mid-run, his body contorting, clothes shreddingâuntil he exploded into his true form.
A massive black wolf.
Larger than any sheâd imagined. Muscles rippled under his fur, and his eyesâstill goldenâglowed with raw fury.
Three wolves lunged from the trees.
Kade met them head-on, slamming into one with enough force to send it flying. He spun, claws slashing, fangs bared. The other two circled, trying to flank him.
But he was too fast. Too powerful.
Aria watched in horror and awe as he fought like a storm unleashedâfluid, savage, beautiful.
Blood sprayed. A scream echoed.
Thenâsilence.
The wolves were gone.
Kade stood in the clearing, panting, his dark fur matted with blood that wasnât his.
And thenâhe looked at her.
Straight through the window.
Straight into her soul.
Mine, that look said.
Forever.

The truce banners of the Bloodfang, Stoneclaw, Moonveil, and others flapped in the wind, symbols of a fragile alliance formed under the promise of survival.Kade rode beside her, eyes scanning the distant hills. He hadnât slept in two nights, but his resolve hadnât faltered.âHeâs close,â he muttered, nostrils flaring. âI can smell his corruption.âAria nodded. âThen we strike tonight.âBehind them, Marcus barked orders. I call on the daughters of moonlight and sons of the silver hunt. Xarion has returned, and he means to burn the world in his wrath.âWhispers rippled through the crowd. Even the flame seemed to flicker in response.Kade stood behind her, eyes fierce, proud.âHe isnât a man,â Aria continued. âHeâs a god twisted by vengeance, and we will not survive him divi
Chapter Seventeen: Blood Oaths and Broken BondsThe war council chamber smelled of cedarwood and tension. The long stone table at its center was surrounded by Bloodfang warriors, advisors, and eldersâall staring at Aria like she was both a miracle and a bomb that could explode at any moment. She stood at the head of the table, Moonfang strapped to her back, her silver eyes scanning every face. Her mate, Alpha Kade, sat beside herâsilent, watchful. In her hand, she held Xarionâs letter.âMy father wants me to come to him alone,â she began, voice steady despite the storm in her chest. âIf I donât, heâll kill Kade.âA rumble of growls spread through the room. Kadeâs eyes burned.âIâd like to see him try,â he muttered.âYou think he canât?â Aria asked, turning to him. âHeâs the Night King, Kade. He turned my mother into a weapon. He raised me in darkness before I even knew who I was. Heâs killed his own blood before. Donât underestimate him.âKade stood, his jaw tense. âAnd you think walk
---Chapter Sixteen: Trial by FireThe chamber was engulfed in white fire. It didnât burn. Instead, it shimmered and pulsed with an ancient magic that sank into Ariaâs skin and blood like liquid moonlight. The voice of Selene, the goddess of the moon, echoed through every corner of the temple, neither kind nor cruelâonly truth.âYou must face yourself, Aria,â Selene said. âTo wield the Moonfang, you must shed the girl you were and embrace the queen youâre becoming.âAria trembled. Not from fear, but from the weight of it all.âI donât know how,â she whispered.Seleneâs figure floated closer. âThen we begin.âWith a wave of her hand, a silver wind whooshed past Ariaâand the others disappeared. The temple was suddenly empty. Kade, Marcus, the warriors... all gone. She was alone.No. Not alone.A mirror rose from the ground before her, shaped like a crescent moon. Its surface rippled, and when she looked into it, her own reflection smirked back at herâbut it wasnât her. Not really. This
---Chapter Fifteen: The AwakeningThe moon was high when Aria stood alone at the edge of the Whispering Forest, the chilling breeze wrapping around her like a silent omen. Behind her, the heart of the Bloodfang pack was slowly rebuilding itself after the rogue attack, but within her, something else was unraveling entirely. The moment the Nightstone had released its power into her, something ancient had awakened inside her blood. A calling. A memory not her own. Dreams of fire and silver wolves. A voice whispering in a language she didnât understand but somehow recognized. And ever since, she hadn't been the same. Her fingers clenched. The wind shifted, brushing through her hair, and the air around her sparkedâtiny flecks of light dancing like embers across her skin. She closed her eyes. She could feel the trees breathing. The earth humming beneath her bare feet. The moon above, pulsing like a heartbeat. She wasnât just human anymore. She didnât know what she was.âI was hoping Iâd fi

Waiting.Kade paced behind her, tension rippling through every muscle. His wolf was close to the surfaceâAria could feel it. The savage growl that rumbled in his chest each time a twig snapped in the distance sent shivers down her spine.âTheyâre testing us,â he said, scanning the tree line. âPushing in just enough to rattle our nerves, but not enough to strike.ââTheyâre waiting for me to come to them,â Aria whispered. She could feel itâlike a magnetic pull in her chest, tugging her toward the woods. Something dark. Ancient. Familiar.Raya approached, her face pale. âThe wards are holding for now, but the energy is wrong. Theyâve got witches with themâdark ones.â
