The rain pounded against the cracked glass of room 304 like a barrage of icy needles. Inside, the sterile smell of bleach could not mask the heavy, metallic reek of lingering decay.

Nora Vance stood by the narrow hospital bed, clutching her younger brother’s frail hand. Leo was only seven years old, but his skin was a translucent alabaster, pale enough that faint blue veins showed like shattered ice under a frozen lake. Every breath he took was a visible battle, his small chest struggling beneath the clear plastic oxygen mask.

The heart monitor chimed in a slow, agonized cadence that echoed in Nora’s chest like a physical blow.

"Miss Vance, a quiet voice broke through the hum of the machinery.

Nora didn't look up immediately. "I'm listening, Dr. Harris.

Dr. Harris stepped into the room, holding a heavy brown clipboard pressed against his white coat. His eyes were dark with exhaustion. "The hospital board held an emergency meeting twenty minutes ago. The equipment providing Leo’s specialized respiratory therapy costs twelve thousand dollars a week. As of midnight, your total accumulated debt stands at eighty-four thousand dollars.

Nora’s throat locked up. She squeezed Leo’s cold fingers tighter. "Dr. Harris, please... I’ve been working three shifts! I’m at the diner by five, I clean downtown offices until six, and I take the overnight shift at the gas station. I can pay you, brought in four hundred dollars yesterday, Nora," Dr. Harris interrupted softly. The board is cutting funding for the border wing. If the balance isn't cleared in full by midnight... we are required to disconnect his breathing apparatus and discharge him into home care."

Home care means he dies in three hours! Nora snapped, tears blurring her vision. "You know his lungs can't process ambient air! Disconnecting him is an execution!

I am a doctor, not the financial director, Dr. Harris whispered, looking away. "You have until midnight.

He backed out of the room, shutting the heavy wooden door with a soft, definitive click.

Nora collapsed onto her knees beside the bed, burying her face in the thin blanket. She shook with silent, wracking sobs. She was twenty-one years old. Ever since their parents were killed in a mysterious wolf pack territory war on the outskirts of town, she had been Leo's sole protector. She had sacrificed everything for him. But the mountain of debt was swallowing them alive.

"Please," Nora whispered into the dark room. "Someone... help us. Take my life instead. Just save my brother."

"A touching display of devotion."

The voice came from the shadowed corner near the window. It was smooth, dark, and cold as liquid nitrogen.

Nora gasped, scrambling to her feet and shielding Leo’s body. "Who's there?"

A woman stepped out from the shadows. She wore an immaculate black tailored suit, her dark hair pinned into a sharp, tight bun. But it was her eyes that made Nora’s blood run cold—they were a shimmering, unnatural golden-amber.

A werewolf, Nora thought, her pulse hammering. An Enforcer from the upper pack circles.

"My name is Madam Vane," the woman said, her high heels clicking on the floor as she laid a heavy leather folder onto the bedside table. "My master has been monitoring your situation, Miss Vance.

"Your master? I don't know any wolves.

"Which makes you useful," Madam Vane replied smoothly. My master is a lord of immense wealth and royal blood. However, due to political strife within the Bloodhound Pack, he requires an heir. Immediately. He requires a surrogate—a human woman completely unattached to pack rivalries. Pure, healthy, and possessing a rare blood profile. You fit every requirement."

Nora’s breath hitched. "A surrogate? You want me to carry a werewolf's child?"

"Inside this folder is a contract," Madam Vane continued, tapping the leather. "Sign it, and eighty-four thousand dollars will be wired to this hospital within three minutes. Your brother will be moved to a private facility with top specialists for the rest of his life. Upon the birth of a healthy heir, an additional five million dollars will be placed in a trust for you."

Nora stared at the folder. And the catch?

You will live in total isolation at the Blackwood Estate," Madam Vane said, her voice dropping to an icy whisper. You will never ask for my master's name. You will never look at his face. And the moment the child is born, you will walk away forever. You will never see the child again. Break these rules, and you die.

The room fell dead silent save for the weak, wheezing gasps of her dying brother.

Nora looked at Leo’s pale face. Then she looked at the pen Madam Vane held out to her.

"Where do I sign?" Nora whispered.
