Chapter 1 — The Invisible Girl

The trick to being invisible is consistency.

Not silence. Not stillness. Those draw attention — people notice an absence faster than a presence. The trick is to exist at exactly the level everyone expects. No more. No less.

Four years of practice.

Today should be easy.

The Ranking Ceremony is held on the first full moon after summer solstice. Every wolf in Ironveil Pack fills the great hall. Ranks confirmed, bonds announced, hierarchy made flesh and official. It's religious the way most pack rituals are religious — which is to say it's mostly about power and everyone pretends otherwise.

I stand at the back. Left wall. Three feet from the secondary exit.

This is where Omegas stand.

We aren't called forward. Our ranks were settled years ago. Some at fourteen. Some fifteen. Me at sixteen, which was its own particular humiliation, but I've had time to make peace with it. We're here because attendance is mandatory. We are furniture. We are the thing the room needs to feel complete without anyone actually wanting us there.

I'm good with that.

My name is Sera Ashveil. Nineteen. Lowest-ranked wolf in Ironveil three years running. I clean the eastern training quarters before dawn because that shift comes with a private bathroom and a lock on the door, and in this pack, privacy is worth more than sleep.

I know where all the exits are in every room I've entered for the last four years.

Old habit. Necessary habit. Mine.

The ceremony starts. Alpha Caius walks to the front in a grey shirt that probably costs more than my monthly food allowance. The room pulls toward him the way rooms always do — that involuntary gravitational thing that happens around Alphas. Half the wolves near me straighten without knowing they've moved.

I don't straighten.

I watch them do it.

Caius is not a cruel man. I want to be precise about that because it matters. He doesn't single out Omegas for sport. He doesn't engineer our suffering. He simply doesn't think about us at all, which produces approximately the same outcome but requires no malice on his part. A clean conscience. Very convenient.

The mated pairs are announced first. There are three new bonds this year — all wolves who turned eighteen in the last cycle. The hall makes a sound when each pair is named. A collective exhale. Like everyone is relieved that the system still works. That Selene still cares. That the Thread of Fate is still running on schedule.

I take a small piece of Moonveil root from my pocket and press it under my tongue.

Bitter. Earthy. It tastes like mud from a cold creek and it costs two weeks of savings per bundle, but it does what it does — flattens my scent down to nearly nothing. To anyone scanning the room I register as background noise. An Omega with nothing worth smelling.

Which is exactly what I want.

Ash is quiet today. She's been quiet for three days actually, which isn't unusual except for the quality of it. There's quiet the way a sleeping animal is quiet, and then there's quiet the way a waiting animal is quiet.

This is the second kind.

I file that away.

The ceremony moves through the upper ranks. Betas confirmed. Two new Gammas — both from the same family, which earns approving murmurs because Ironveil respects bloodline consistency. A Delta promotion. Everyone claps at the right intervals. Someone near the front is wearing too much pine resin on their wrists, the kind young wolves use to mimic Alpha scent, and I can smell it from here, and it's tragic, and I feel nothing about it except a distant recognition.

I used to want things.

I'm much more comfortable now.

Forty minutes in, Caius raises his hand and the room settles. He speaks — something formal about Selene's grace, the pack's strength, the bonds that hold us. His voice carries the Alpha undertone that makes the words land in your chest instead of just your ears. I've learned to hear it the way you learn to hear traffic. Constant. Ignorable. Not mine.

Then he stops.

His head turns.

Not toward the mated pairs. Not toward the Gammas still flushed with their promotion. He turns toward the back of the room. Toward the left wall. Toward the three feet of space between me and the secondary exit.

Toward me.

His nostrils move. Just slightly.

Caius has been Alpha for six years. He has a face that gives away nothing. I've studied it the way you study weather — not because you can control it, but because the difference between prepared and unprepared is the difference between surviving and not.

Right now his face is doing something I haven't seen before.

Confusion. Clean, unguarded confusion.

He's scenting something he doesn't recognize.

My hand is already in my pocket. The Moonveil root is already under my tongue. My scent is suppressed. It should be — I took it twenty minutes ago. There's nothing here. There's nothing—

*Run.*

One word. Ash. She hasn't spoken in three days and her first word is that one.

I don't run.

I don't move at all.

Because moving would confirm that his attention is correctly placed. So I stay exactly where I am, back to the wall, three feet from the exit I am not taking, while Alpha Caius Voss stares at me across a room full of his wolves with an expression I cannot name.

And then he says it.

Quiet enough that only the front rows should hear. Loud enough, with that Alpha resonance, that somehow the whole room does.

"You. Come here."

A hundred heads turn.

All of them looking at the same thing he's looking at.

All of them looking at me.

Ash is not quiet anymore. She's making a sound I've never heard from her — not a growl, not a warning. Something older. Something that belongs to a language I don't know yet.

I look at Caius.

I look at the exit.

I look back at Caius.

There's a water stain on the ceiling above him, I notice. Shaped almost like a crescent. I've cleaned this hall eighty times. I've never noticed that before.

I notice it now.

I take one step forward.

  • THE ALPHA'S FORGOTTEN OMEGA   Chapter 65 — Pell

Rynn finds me at dawn.I'm on the north ridge — old habit reasserting itself in the specific way habits do after significant days, the body going where it knows before the mind decides anything. She sits beside me.Not the careful four feet. Right beside me, close enough that our shoulders touch, and she doesn't pull away when it happens.Neither do I.We look at the valley below. The pack house lights still on in the kitchen, the early shift starting. The specific ordinary texture of a morning that doesn't know it came after something significant. She doesn't speak for a long time.I let the silence be what it is."He thought I was dead," she says finally. Her voice carries something I don't have a clean name for — not relief, not grief, somewhere in the specific territory between two things that have been kept apart for so long that their reunion doesn't feel like a single emotion but like several arriving simultaneously."They told him complications," she says. "During a supply run

  • THE ALPHA'S FORGOTTEN OMEGA   Chapter 64 — After

The council ends at midday.People leave in the specific way of people who've just had something significant shift beneath them and need space to process before they can speak about it usefully. Maret walks out with Orin, their shoulders almost touching, the specific proximity of two people who've just stepped across a threshold they've been standing at from different sides for a long time.Sable stops beside me on her way out."The table we discussed," she says."You'll have a seat at it," I say.She nods once. Leaves.I stand in the empty main hall for a moment. The documents back in the satchel. The pendant in my pocket beside the wolf. The chairs pushing back from the table at different angles, the specific disorder of a meeting that went longer than any formal protocol could fully contain. The challenge circle on the floor.I look at it.The chip in the northeast edge that I've cleaned around hundreds of times and finally cleaned over, weeks ago, without it making any difference

  • THE ALPHA'S FORGOTTEN OMEGA   Chapter 63 — The Council

The Pentarchy council meets in Ironveil's main hall. Not a neutral location — this was deliberate, Sable's suggestion, delivered through a message two days ago with the specific reasoning that neutral ground advantages no one while familiar ground advantages the host, and currently we need every advantage available.Three pack representatives sit at the long table.Duskfall: Sable herself, which I didn't expect and should have. She sits with her hands flat on the table and her expression carrying the specific neutrality of someone who's already decided and is simply waiting for everyone else to catch up.Ashborne is empty. Kael's pack, destroyed. The chair left there anyway — Sable's insistence, she said. Absence should be visible. The third representative I don't recognize. Middle-aged, Gamma build, wearing Solaris pale grey — but not Vayne's Solaris. Someone else's.Orin sits beside her. When she sees me looking, she gives the smallest nod.I take my position at the table's head.No

  • THE ALPHA'S FORGOTTEN OMEGA   Chapter 62 — Before the Council

Morning comes grey and cold.I'm awake before it arrives, sitting on the training room floor with Vayne's document, Elan's release order, Orin's twenty years of correspondence, and the carved wolf all laid out in front of me like a map I'm reading for the last time before I have to put it away and walk the territory myself.Kael finds me there at fifth hour.He doesn't ask what I'm doing. He sits beside me, close enough that our arms touch, and looks at what I've arranged on the floor with the same reading attention he gives his own maps. After a while he picks up the carved wolf.Turns it over.Sets it back down with Lyris facing up.I watch his hand stay on it for a moment before he lifts it away."The council starts at tenth hour," he says."I know.""You haven't slept.""I know that too."He doesn't tell me to sleep. He's learned, over these past weeks, the difference between exhaustion that rest can fix and exhaustion that requires the thing causing it to finish. We sit for a whi

  • THE ALPHA'S FORGOTTEN OMEGA   Chapter 61 : Orin

The message arrives that evening. Not through Sable's network. Not through official Pentarchy channels. Through Elan, who receives it from a contact inside Solaris territory with the specific efficiency of a community that's spent two hundred and forty years learning to communicate without being observed. The message is three sentences.I am Orin. Vayne's second for twenty years. I need to speak with Sera Ashveil before the council tomorrow. Alone.I read it twice.Kael reads it over my shoulder and says nothing, which is its own kind of response."The contact Sable mentioned," I say. "Someone inside Solaris declaring against Vayne quietly.""Possibly." His voice carries the specific flatness of someone who isn't dismissing a theory but isn't endorsing it either. "Or someone Vayne sent to extract information about what we plan to present tomorrow.""Both could be true simultaneously.""Yes."Cael examines the message when I bring it to her, her expression carrying the specific quality

  • THE ALPHA'S FORGOTTEN OMEGA   Chapter 60 : The Name

KAELI've been searching for seven years. Not obsessively — I've been careful about that distinction, careful not to let the searching become the thing I live around rather than inside of. Seven years of tracking pack histories, Solaris records, any archived documentation that might contain a fifteen-year-old novice's name listed as deceased in a ritual that wasn't what the official record claimed.I found nothing.Every search came back empty, which itself told me something — names that don't appear in records aren't accidental omissions. They're deliberate removals. Someone decided this specific name shouldn't exist in any archive that anyone might access. That's a different kind of erasure than simply dying young. That's the kind of erasure that happens to people who matter in ways the people doing the erasing need to contain.I understood this intellectually for seven years.Understanding it didn't make the searching stop. The paper in my jacket sits against my sternum as I watch

  • THE ALPHA'S FORGOTTEN OMEGA   Chapter 27 — Kael's Choice

KAELThe north ridge at three in the morning is hers.I know this. She comes here before dawn, after difficult things, when the pack house gets too loud in the specific way silence gets loud. I've been tracking her patterns for seven months and the north ridge is always hers.I come here anyway. No

  • THE ALPHA'S FORGOTTEN OMEGA   Chapter 5 — The Scent Breaks

I wake up knowing. Not a thought. A body thing. The way you know before you open your eyes that the weather changed overnight — something in the pressure, something in the quality of the air against your skin.I reach under my cot.The cloth wrap is there. I unwrap it on my lap in the dark, before

  • THE ALPHA'S FORGOTTEN OMEGA   Chapter 4 — Rank Means Nothing

The summons comes at dawn. Not a knock. A folded paper slid under my door while I was still asleep, which means whoever delivered it didn't want to be seen delivering it, which means it wasn't official pack business.Except it is.I read it twice. Then a third time because the words aren't changing

  • THE ALPHA'S FORGOTTEN OMEGA   Chapter 2 — What He Thinks He Found

I count one hundred and twelve steps from the great hall back to the Omega quarters.I know because I counted them the first time, three years ago, when Alpha Caius called me forward at a different ceremony for a different humiliation, and I needed something to do with my brain that wasn't feeling
