KAYE'S POV

They carried Vanessa into the medical wing like she might shatter if anyone moved too fast.

I stayed close, my hands hovering uselessly as the backup doctor and two healers worked around her with urgent precision. Her body was thin to the point of fragility, bones sharp beneath skin that looked stretched and bruised. Scars covered her arms, her neck, her collarbone. They were not random. They were clean. Measured. Surgical.

My stomach twisted.

These were not the marks of a rogue attack or careless torture. They were the marks of someone who knew anatomy. Someone who cut with purpose.

“She is alive,” the doctor said finally, voice tight. “But barely. Her wolf is suppressed almost completely. I have never seen suppression this severe without death following shortly after.”

I felt a chill slide down my spine.

Wolf suppression was not just physical. It was spiritual. To damage a wolf this deeply meant stripping away instinct, identity, and the core of who a person was. It was n

  • THE ALPHA’S GHOST   CHAPTER 77

KAYE'S POVI woke slowly, the way you do when your body knows something is wrong before your mind catches up.Cold pressed into my back. The air smelled clean and sharp, like pungent chemicals. Light hummed softly overhead. I tried to move and pain sparked at my wrists and ankles, quick and punishing.Restraints.I opened my eyes fully and saw white walls that curved upward, smooth and seamless. No corners. No windows. Just steel panels and glowing screens set into the walls like watchful eyes.I was strapped to a table. The restraints were thick, reinforced with silver bands woven through the metal. They bit into my skin, humming faintly, dampening the silver heat that usually pulsed through my veins. My body felt heavy, slower than it should have been.Panic surged.I reached for the mate bond instinctively.Ethan.He was there, distant but real, like a star seen through fog. His fear flared the moment I touched the bond, sharp and furious, followed by relief so strong it made my ch

  • THE ALPHA’S GHOST   CHAPTER 76

ETHAN'S POVI woke up choking on smoke that no longer existed. My lungs burned as if I had just dragged air through fire, and my head felt like it had been split open and stitched back together wrong. For a long moment, I did not know where I was. The world came in pieces. Stone ceiling. Dim light. The sharp sting of antiseptic. The heavy ache in every bone. Then the silence hit me.Not the calm kind. The dead kind.I forced my eyes open fully and pushed myself upright, ignoring the pain that screamed through my side and chest. Someone tried to stop me. Hands pressed down on my shoulders.“Easy,” a voice said. “You have been out for three days.”Three days. The words landed slowly, then all at once.My heart slammed against my ribs as memory crashed back into me. Fire. Explosions. The clearing tearing itself apart. Hallen smiling. Warped wolves pulling Kaye into the trees.“Kaye,” I said hoarsely, my voice breaking. “Where is Kaye.”No one answered right away. That told me everything.

  • THE ALPHA’S GHOST   CHAPTER 75

KAYE'S POVThe warped wolves did not slow down.Five of them dragged me through the forest like I weighed nothing, their grip iron hard around my arms and shoulders. My feet barely touched the ground as trees blurred past, branches snapping against my legs and face. I fought anyway, silver veins blazing as I twisted and struck, but it was useless. They moved together with brutal coordination, each one adjusting instantly to my resistance.Every time I broke one grip, two more tightened. They were stronger than anything I had ever faced. Stronger than transformed soldiers. Stronger than reason.Behind us, the battlefield burned.I could still hear it through the forest. Explosions. Howls. Screams. Fire cracking and snapping. Blackwater fighting for its life.Through the mate bond, Ethan’s presence roared inside me.Fear. Rage. Desperation so intense it stole my breath. He was chasing us. I could feel it. Every ounce of him was pushing forward despite his wounds, despite the poison stil

  • THE ALPHA’S GHOST   CHAPTER 74

ETHAN'S POVThe truth tore through what little stability I had left.Dr. Hallen Liston. The backup doctor. The woman who had stepped in seamlessly when Sarah vanished. The one who had treated my wolves when they were sick, injured, terrified. The one who had looked parents in the eye and told them their children would be all right.Jon Tulip’s daughter. The realization cracked something deep in my chest. Through the mate bond, I felt Kaye’s horror mirror my own, sharp and suffocating. Every moment replayed in my mind with brutal clarity. Every medical exam. Every blood draw. Every carefully recorded symptom and recovery time.It had all been data. She had not been healing my pack. She had been cataloging them.“You ran the numbers on us,” I said hoarsely, staring at her twisted form. “Every one of us.”Hallen Liston’s smile widened, bright and pleased, as if I had just complimented her work. “Of course,” she said cheerfully. “Sarah trained me well before she left. Continuity matters i

  • THE ALPHA’S GHOST   CHAPTER 73

KAYE'S POVFor one stretched, horrible moment, no one moved. The battlefield seemed to pause, as if even the warped wolves sensed the shift. Fire crackled. Someone groaned in pain. Ash drifted through the air like falling snow. And still, everyone stood frozen, eyes darting from face to face, searching for the traitor Jon Tulip had hidden among us.The eldest daughter.Someone trusted.Someone close. My heart pounded so hard it hurt. Through the mate bond, I felt Ethan’s mind racing, names flashing, memories replaying with brutal speed. Wolves we had leaned on. Wolves who had stood beside us in meetings, in grief, in planning.I forced myself to breathe and let my senses open fully. The silver veins along my arms burned hot, reacting to the pathogen network still screaming across the clearing. I followed the pull, the subtle wrongness I had learned to recognize over weeks of fear and betrayal. And then I smelled it.A scent that had been there for days. For weeks. Familiar enough that

  • THE ALPHA’S GHOST   CHAPTER 72

ETHAN'S POVThe truth hit like an explosion inside my chest.Through the mate bond, I felt Kaye’s world collapse in real time. The moment Miriam spoke, something fundamental inside her cracked open and gave way. The certainty she had clung to for years, the belief that her father had tried to stop the nightmare instead of fueling it, shattered completely. Grief tore through her first, sharp and suffocating, followed by disbelief so strong it almost stopped her heart. Then came rage. Not wild rage. Not screaming fury. The kind that goes quiet and deadly.I felt it coil inside her like a blade being drawn slowly from its sheath. Her father had not just been involved. He had sacrificed his own pack.He had handed wolves over to Jon Tulip and watched them be torn apart piece by piece for research. The revelation poisoned everything Kaye had carried with her for six years. Her memories twisted under the weight of it. Every defense she had built around his innocence crumbled.I staggered un
